Sassenach is indeed a derogatory comment Richie.
It was an insult from Highlanders and referred to Lowlander Scots who the Highlanders didn't see as real Scots.
Over the years its meaning has drifted and is now used to define the English although real Highlanders stick true to its origins.

Tactical optics and substantive strategy. Johnson places great value on short term optics as reported by the Daily Express and the rest of the Brexit echo chamber media channels. The EU couldn't care less about the optics in the UK. It is focused on (very) long term goals and objectives. The optics will be forgotten very quickly.

Johnson claims a great victory, often on a matter of process more than substance.
The EU lets them claim a great victory. Domestic supporters either pretend to believe or actually believe (it doesn't matter which) that their government has won a great victory.
And the deal the EU wants to do is done.

The EU has done this a lot, remember.
They are the world's most successful negotiatiors, ever, having patiently constructed the largest and deepest network of international trade arrangements in history.
You don't get to do that without picking up a few tricks along they way about how to bring home a negotiation successfully.

......  but, but, but

Its of bigger importance to EU than UK.  UK waters were extended through EU treaty - will Johnson / Cummmins want to revoke that? EU would be entitled to, but haven't said they would.... yet.

The vast majority of UK fish exported to EU, the industry will collapse without free access to EU market - they are only looking for a compromise here. Its us who have made a "big deal" out of it  -  "our water, our fish etc blah, blah, blah  -  but we want free access to EU market".

What should we give to get access to their market?  Nothing !!  Serious question.

Do you think they won't want to buy the fish? They have to get it from somewhere as their markets want it. Fish is sold around the world.

Common fisheries policy agreed by EU and Norway, Iceland (I think) has been very successful in sustainable fishing through agreed quotas.

I'm sure access will be agreed, but deep down I think Johnson/Gove/Cummins et al don't really care as long as they can spin any agreement. But their posturing has actually put them unnecessarily in a difficult position whereby any reasonable access for the Eu in UK waters will be seen (incorrectly) as a climbdown.

'thanks' to the cfp we have over a thousand laws on fishing.  if there is no agreement then our fish cant be landed in the eu. there is also a un agreement, the un convention on the law of the sea (unclos) which deals with the fact that fish migrate (sometimes they may be in our waters but at other times they cheat on us and swim in foreign waters) to be considered. further, there is the concept of acquired rights whereby they could carry on fishing even after the treaty no longer applies to us, the legal experts cant agree if this would apply or not so court cases would be likely.
