Michelle O’Neill has said Sinn Fein is hoping to unseat “an architect of Brexit” - DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds - as it aims to increase its number of MPs from seven to eight. As the Press Association reports, the Sinn Fein vice president said the December 12 general election will be about maximising the return of pro-Remain candidates.
Standing alongside the party’s North Belfast candidate John Finucane, O’Neill said:
"We will stand in our seven constituencies in which we currently hold seats and we will stand in North Belfast to win that seat. We believe there is a real opportunity in North Belfast to oust someone who has been architect of Brexit, someone who has actively worked against the interests of people who live here on this island, and John Finucane can provide local representation but also will reflect Ireland’s interests in all of this mess."
Dodds had a majority of 2,081 over Sinn Fein in 2017. But at that election Dodds did not face a challenge from the Ulster Unionist party, which agreed to give the DUP a clear run to maximise the unionist vote. But this time the UUP intends to put up candidates in all 18 of Northern Ireland’s constituency because it does not want to be seen to endorse the DUP’s Brexit stance.
Neutral in regards Sinn Feins Westminister stance,at least they are consistent, however with a general election in particular rather than local or NI, why don't they get behind the SDLP?
Genuine question, there probably is a reason but i don't know.

The incoming leader of the Ulster Unionist Party is coming under increasing pressure on his stance over a unionist electoral pact.
Steve Aiken has said that his party will stand candidates in all 18 Westminster seats set to be contested on December 12.
However, DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson claimed the stance will mean a "unionist dogfight", and warned this could risk unionists losing seats to Sinn Féin.
Unionist rival the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) said agreed unionist candidates in certain constituencies was a "no-brainer".
A unionist pact saw Ulster Unionist Tom Elliott win the Fermanagh South Tyrone Westminster seat in 2015. However, Sinn Féin's Michelle Gildernew won the seat back for her party in 2017.

All the same to them anyway, they (dup) went against the wishes of the majority, sure they will have their hardcore, but a wake up call to most, they have nothing, Boris and the English nationalists showed them what's what.

ps I don’t think the Ulster Unionists are worried about the DUPs stance on a border in the Irish Sea They agree with the DUP that wasn’t acceptable So Brexit is nether here nor there when it comes to that

Finucane has little chance of unseating Dodds this time. in effect, I make Dodds a 1/9 shot.
There are realistically only 3 seats in the mix in Northern Ireland.
The most likely one to change is the one on Foyle where if the SDLP run a half decent campaign they will wrestle back their historic seat from Sinn Fein.
The second close contest will be Lady Hermon v the DUP in North Down. The DUP have been chipping away at her base in the last ten years and she is now very vulnerable, if anything I would favour the DUPer in this contest.
The third seat with a question mark is South Belfast, DUP/Pengally took the seat last time from SDLP. Although she has only about 30% of the first preference, as the sole Unionist in the race and with SDLP, Sinn Fein, Alliance and Green all slicing and dicing the rest of the vote, unless there is a pact(highly unlikely), then Pengally holds on.

John Finucane is popular in the area i could see the seat being taken by him, Sinn Fein are excellent at getting there voters out and with it being held in December alot of Dodds older supporters may not get out to vote will be alot closer than you think.

Let’s hope the good people of N Ireland and north Belfast remember the disgraceful behaviour of the republican Sinn Fein in helping the changes in law over abortion , against the wishes of their people ( and indeed the Protestant people )

Of course they are ya fool, they are up to their necks with numerous loyalist murder gangs, in fact many are ex members, who terrorised their own communities to fill their pockets, they were worse to their own thick orange walk followers that the provisionals ever where. The whole thing loyalist fighting the IRA was a sham to protect their criminal enterprises.

The truth hurts ! you know what these scumbags done to their own communities, everybody knows, the DUP and the rest of the loyalist parties have always been inextricably linked to death squads, (UVF,LVF,UDA, red hand commandos) who peddled muck to their own communities and ran prostitutes of both sexes.
Btw Republican Sinn Fein and Sinn Fein are 2 different organisations and I agree Sinn Fein were behind abortion change throughout Ireland and I also disagree with that stance too.

I suggest you moderate your language Malay You see it’s your opinion that the IRA no longer exists , I disagree And so does any sensible unbiased person. I watched the bbc news programme a few nights ago , and it said that old members of the provisional IRA were engaged in training up young men near the border , in how to use weapons and explosives etc . Also , have we had anyone charged and convicted as yet for that young female reporter killed earlier this year by the IRA No , not yet , and yet the IRA lives freely even now in these communities ,Sinn Fein knows what is going on and are still connected to Sinn Fein That’s my opinion , I don’t believe anything you might say on the matter , so you can pipe down and stop issuing threats I know you might find that difficult

The touts are everywhere 71, the world and it's granny know that.
That's how the corrupt Tory British Governments work.
It's filthy services still withhold the truth and to be honest it is so bad i don't think i really want to know the full truth of who they bought and used whilst carrying out their shoot to kill policies, their internment and double agents who ran free of the law.

Regarding who people were supporting last Saturday it was interesting to see the reaction nationwide . Those interviewed in Wales were supporting South Africa , those interviewed in Scotland were supporting South Africa , those interviewed in Northern Ireland were supporting England . Ponder on that .
Not really surprising that those interviewed in Belfast were supporting England , any nationalists interviewed would probably not know anything about Sweet Chariot as they follow hurling , gaelic football and soccer ( Man U , Liverpool , and Glasgow Celtic) before any interest in rugby .
Proves you need to know your audience before drawing any conclusions re opinions .
England just underperformed , victims possibly of their own hype engendered by supporters and media .

In the south i was supporting England, in part because my son is English and i had a good life there, but also because the Saffer brand of rugby is brutal.
Those countries 71 were not good enough.
England entered the final as massive FAVS, they choked and performed miserably.

Re rugby , Ireland were beaten by Japan , and are about 5 players away from being top class. Scotland are not as good as Ireland on an average day for both. Wales are not as good as England , were lucky against France who played with 14 for most of the match . Wales vs South Africa was one of the worst rugby matches any of us have seen , England ( and the media ) obviously saw that match and concluded they only had to turn out to win the World Cup .
People draw conclusions which do not always work out in practice . One of the reasons that the Betfair ( original anyway ) model worked so well .

There isn't that many people play rugby in Scotland, it's very much a minority sport. They probably punch above their weight considering this, at International level.
I come from the west of Scotland and don't know anybody who has ever taken part in an official Rugby match, even school or amateur, never mind professional.
Even in pubs very few watch it or even know the rules.

National team poor just now, I'd say there are more people playing presently than ever too.
It's difficult to put a finger on it's decline, as the top English teams in the past had loads of Scots.
Strachan got pillored for talking about genes recently. I'm not sure he was wrong, the black players in English, Dutch, French, Belgium football have had a positive impact on the national team over the years, their athleticism is a big asset.
There is not a lot of black people in Scotland, don't know why, maybe the national team miss their natural power and pace.
Dissident republicans do not have the support of the community, they should disband immediately, destroy their weapons and participate in peaceful processes to achieve their political aims.

In 1971 Belfast, 14 nationalists were interned without trial - Francie McGuigan and Liam Shannon amongst them. They claim their British Army captors placed hoods on their heads and beat and tortured them for the following seven days. The `Hooden Men" suffered long-term psychological damage and they are still seeking justice today.
