Labour must promise another Brexit referendum to counter the electoral challenge posed by Nigel Farage, the party's deputy leader has said.
Writing in the Observer, Tom Watson said his party could not "sit on the fence" about the biggest issue to face the UK for a generation.

Nigel leaps on this, fires up twitter and declares that "a new referendum would be a total insult to five million Labour Leave voters".

Thanks goodness we have Nigel on hand to point such factors out for us.

He's right though. Remain votes are going to be spread across several parties as it stands. Next best (for many) is a second vote.

Vote currently looks to be a shoot out between Labour and Farage.

However, Labour are running scared again. Terrified of standing for something and wanting to - by omission - be all things to all men. If they stand for a second vote and then they're committed and they just can't stand that right now.

But if they do go for it, then suddenly the remainers have a single party to vote for, one who can "win" the EU elections and send a clear message to the Tories about public opinion.
Report Angoose April 21, 2019 12:10 PM BST
Sums up British politics.

The government is led by a remainer, yet the majority of her MP's are for leaving.
Meanwhile, the opposition is fronted by a leaver who is surrounded by a majority of MP's who are for remaining.

Why can't Theresa and Jeremy simply swap roles, it wouldn't be any more ridiculous than the ongoing pantomime.
Report unitedbiscuits April 21, 2019 2:30 PM BST
The awful state of UK politics today. Corbyn is as bad as May.
Report InsiderTrader April 21, 2019 2:41 PM BST
Labour cannot betray the British people and attempt to keep the UK in the EU.
Report unitedbiscuits April 21, 2019 3:17 PM BST
It's not a question of betrayal, it's a question of a country having a political system that reflects both sides of the country, not one.
Leavers are running scared of putting it back to the people, that's clear; that is no justification for trying to stop democracy after winning a vote, that is so 1930's Germany - we all know how that ended.
Report Angoose April 21, 2019 4:32 PM BST
Because, of course, there is no history of politicians ever following an alternative course of action to one which they previously gave their support to.
Report InsiderTrader April 21, 2019 5:00 PM BST
Indeed it is not a 1930s Germany where a minority voted for a party that took power.

In this case a majority voted to leave the EU.

So lets do what the majority voted for rather than let the minority dictate to the rest of the country to stay ruled by the unelected old white men of Brussels.

Insider Trader, your lot had a good run at it (1000 days) and f***ed it up completely unsurprisingly, (although one should not generalise about Leave voters, sometimes it is hard not to).

UB talking pro EU **** as normal.since day one the likes of you and your remainer freinds have tried to **** brexit.
I would be inclined to agree with your 1000 days to sort it if you would have given the brexiteers a free run at it,
but you didn't,since day one the remainers have done everything in their power to overturn the result of the referendum.
On another note,I know loads of mates who voted remain but wanted to vote leave but succumbed to project fear.

Another rotating argument from UB.

No Brexit supporters were ever anywhere the decision making process.

It was May and her civil servants that came up with the worst deal in history to keep us in the EU.

Got anything new UB?

No, but I see Leavers are opening up a whole new cul-de-sac of resentment and grievance .
How have Remainers stopped you executing your otherwise successful Brexit? Pray tell, w/ specific examples from past 1000 days of failure.
Report Lochangel April 21, 2019 8:30 PM BST
You have had Blair,Campbell,Clegg etc going to Brussels meddling.

Basically telling the EU to give us FA.
Report unitedbiscuits April 21, 2019 8:33 PM BST
In what capacity? EU were negotiating with UK Govt only.

Are you saying - if everyone like me swung behind Brexit, it would have produced a different outcome? How?
Report Lochangel April 21, 2019 8:50 PM BST
We'll never know now.but it would have helped if you remainers had accepted the referendum result,
and shut your moaning and resentment up and got behind a decent deal.
Report unitedbiscuits April 21, 2019 9:10 PM BST
I'm very flattered that you believe I could have helped to make Brexit fail.
In truth, you failed all by yourselves.
Report Lochangel April 21, 2019 9:21 PM BST
Don't flatter yourself,we all know why if brexit
doesn't happen the reason why,the establishment
doesn't want it to happen.
Report unitedbiscuits April 21, 2019 9:29 PM BST
The establishment in this country is ordered under Her Majesty the Queen, the peerage, and the parliamentarians who represent the people and form the law.
Do you mean a different "establishment"? Who are you talking about?
Report Lochangel April 21, 2019 9:41 PM BST
Yea right, you know what i meant,
Most people at the higher end of the social spectrum
are pro EU,got more to lose i suppose,
happy with their lot,but at the end of the day the majority
want out,and you remainers go on about the young being
pro EU,well that's bollox.only the students,
every young brick layer, joiner, plumber, white van driver
i know voted out.
Report unitedbiscuits April 21, 2019 9:57 PM BST
I'd say the generalisation is correct but, to add another, the end of the social spectrum who voted in Brexit did so on the assumption that the benefits safety-net would endure whatever the result, so damn the consequences. So, a bit of a free-shot whiplash-claim for those who thought they had little to lose. They should have been more careful in what they wished-for, judging by the plans Iain Duncan Smith and his ilk have in store for them.
Report Lochangel April 21, 2019 10:18 PM BST
Bull,i'll think you wil find the bottom end of the social spectrum doesn't vote
for obvious reasons, and if they had the brexit majority would have been bigger.
One man,one vote, shocking how you remainers have said we didn't know what we
were voting for.I knew, might be poorer in the short term.house might be worth less,
so what, that's a good thing imo,but long term the UK will be a better place.
I Don't want any part of their long term plan for Europe. My opinion, and that's
come inspite of all the pro EU bull i've had pushed on me.
Report n88uk April 22, 2019 2:05 AM BST
It's actually those types that were conned in the first place somehow into thinking the likes of Farage and Boris are for them when they are just in it for themselves. The reason those types are targeted is because obviously it's easier to con the less educated than the better educated.

It's not even the establishment standing in the way of Brexit, after all if May's deal had passed in January we'd be out by now. It's that there was no idea how you actually leave in the first place, that has what has cost Brexit, 3 years later and the country is still none the wiser what it actually wants out of Brexit that is actually achievable.
Report Whisperingdeath April 22, 2019 7:42 AM BST
Labour do need to stop sitting on the fence and make a stand.

I would not be surprised if they did offer another referendum. I think Pandora's box has already been opened and maybe she should have kept her legs closed.

Whatever happens the country is divided. The country needs leadership and somebody has to stand up.

There is political opportunity for Labour here and they seem afraid to grasp the nettle. Maybe they will wait until the Euro elections before they make their move. They are too afraid of their Northern Monkeys deserting them.
Report n88uk April 22, 2019 11:26 AM BST
I'd expect Labour to do nothing tbh, the leadership will probably look at it, see that Tory support is collapsing, and think they're doing fine, and probably not really care too much about the European elections. By making a stand of course it exposes the divisions in their own party which in recent weeks have been mostly kept under wraps.
Report Whisperingdeath April 23, 2019 12:04 PM BST
true dat

They are vacillating and keeping their heads under the parapet. I understand that view and maybe it is prudent politically but the Country needs leadership and they have provided none.
