A FRENCH politician has slammed Britain’s “grotesque and hypocritical” immigration policies for leaving Calais overrun with migrants.

“The thing they want is to go to England. In their original countries those people are saying, ‘If you go to England, you will have everything. You will have a house, you will have money, you will have a job, your family will be able to join you’.

Some very interesting stats here.
Report Eeternaloptimist November 13, 2013 3:26 PM GMT
There were 47.3 million foreign-born residents in the EU in 2010, corresponding to 9.4% of the total population.

The UK comes in at 11.3% but that is only part of the story because the largest part of these people are drawn to the large cities of England.
Report Eeternaloptimist November 13, 2013 3:31 PM GMT
But of course that is only part of the issue. Who is coming? Is it highly intelligent/highly skilled people who will add to our increasingly knowledge/technology based needs?

Page 5 of the above report gives us a very interesting insight into this question:

63.4% of the EU residents born abroad come from Highly Developed countries Eurostat has recently started collecting data which show the distribution of EU residents by the level of development of their country of birth. For this purpose the Human Development Index (HDI) is used. The HDI is calculated by the United Nations under the UN Development Programme as a composite index that measures progress in three basic dimensions – health, education and living standards. Countries are classified into High, Medium and Less Developed countries. The group of High HDI countries consists mainly of Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, large parts of South America and some countries in Western Asia. Medium and Less Developed countries are mainly situated in the rest of Asia and Africa.

At EU level, 63.4% of the foreign-born population were born in High HDI countries, 31.5% in Medium HDI countries and 5.1% in Less Developed countries. In Slovenia the percentage of people born in other Highly Developed countries was the highest (98.5%), while in France it was the lowest (40.9%). In four of the five Member States with the largest foreign-born populations - namely France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy - the share of those born in High HDI countries was
below the EU average. This has the effect of lowering the EU-27 average, as a result of which, the share of most Member States exceeds the
average.,In all EU-27 countries, the foreign-born population from High HDI countries was over-represented in comparison to the distribution of the total world
population, of which less than 30% live in Highly Developed countries.
Report Eeternaloptimist November 13, 2013 3:41 PM GMT
When you look at the country we most resemble out of the EU 27 and the country we aspire to match in Germany it is very noticeable that when you compare us and indeed France to Germany and some of the other high end technology and service EU countries we are drawing a massive percentage of our immigrants from poorer countries largely more poorly educated countries. Countries like Germany are drawing in a huge percentage of their immigrants from (HDI) or richer largely better educated countries.

Given the fact of our relations with most of the HDI countries like America, Australia, New Zealand etc these figures are astonishing.

That's a challenge we need to address. It isn't necessarily how many? It is how many and where? It's about existing population densities in those areas and it is also about the abilities of the people who are coming to this country.
Report northernlad5 November 13, 2013 3:55 PM GMT
Pure gobledegook rubbish.

Report Eeternaloptimist November 13, 2013 4:06 PM GMT
No northernlad. In Britain immigrants tend to go to England. In England the immigrants gravitate to the cities. England is comparatively small with a comparatively large population in the cities. But the figures quoted relate to the UK as a whole which is therefore unrepresentative. A country like Germany has a lower population density than the UK and within the UK the population density in Wales and Scotland is much lower than in England. The relative existing population densities between England and Germany and indeed most of the rest of Europe are very different. Therefore it is far more difficult for a country like England to take in more.

Which of that are you finding difficult to comprehend?

After we've done that we can go on to discuss the actual people who are settling here compared to Germany.
Report Eeternaloptimist November 13, 2013 4:11 PM GMT
The number of people living in England has overtaken the population density of Holland, which has traditionally been the most densely-populated major nation on the continent.

The count, which has been attributed to higher levels of immigration, shows England now has 395 people per square kilometre.

The figures were obtained in a parliamentary answer from the Office of National Statistics.

In 2008 the average number of people per square kilometre in Britain was 253, rising to 395 in England.

Latest figures from Holland show that its population density was 395 a square kilometre in 2002 and 393 in 2005. It is estimated that English population density will rise to 464 people for every square kilometre by 2031.

The population density in England is already almost double the level in Germany and quadruple that in France.

England may be the densest among big European nations but we have to remember that we are in an Island and successful islands like Britain, Malta, Macau, Japan, Singapore, Hong kong etc tend to attract alot of immigrants.

Paris has a population density of over 20,000/sq km which is about 4 times higher than England's densest city which is London.

Barcelona, Athens or Monaco are about 3 times as crowded as London is.

London does not even make the top 50 from this European list!!! France and Spain seem to have been overrepresented even though they are some of the largest/least dense countries in Europe people will only go to live where there is prosperity.

Looking at the US despite their size there are quite a few cities that are more densely populated than London!!!

New York City is twice as densely populated as London is!!! Cities like San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Miami have higher/similar densities as London.

England has little inhospitable areas, unlike Germany for example.
If you want you can push density population up even further, by cutting out the poor counties, and only counting the South East. Or maybe just count London.... O no but then although France has a quite low density population, Paris, as Boris said, has twice the density of London.

It is true that I conflated two seemingly different things. But I believe that places like Gibraltar, Malta, Jersey or Britain have higher population densities because of the success of their economies compared to their neighbours.

The fact remains that London would have more than 30million souls living in it if we decided to cram in a similar density as that of Paris and I am not sure Paris is the worst place to live in.

People are attracted to success. I agree with this point. So why England and not Germany which has a much lower population density?

You know very well that the main cause for this is the stupid and ruinous decision by our ancestors to have that empire malarkey!!! They made English and our culture the centre of the world so most of the world learn English/American and aspire to come and live the dream and no one learns German or Japanese.

Germany had to forego its empire hence they do not have that legacy unlike Britain, France or Spain who feel the need to invite in immigrants from their former colonies who tend to be poorer than other EU immigrants who populate the likes of Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc.

And if that works for individuals then that is dandy but it clearly doesn't seem to be working for the people of this country for who immigration and assimilation seems to be a major issue.

They're not talking about cooking.

"Listen Mad Lad you fool. If you want to work all day like a dog for a pound don't blame someone smarter than you who makes money even when he is sleeping".

As I suspected - well while your sleeping with your curtains drawn, the rest of us are going out to create the tax revenue you collect in benefits!

Your lazy attitude is a national problem!

Northy talking of celebrity chefs.

Nigela Lawson is on Channel 41 now cooking.

Lots of close ups of her face (before her husband gave her a shiner of course.)
Close ups of her fingers, her hair, and of course shots of her t its hanging out.

Wait a bit!

Aren’t women supposed to wear a hair net when they’re preparing food?
The dirty cow looks like she’s dressed up for a dinner and dance not for the kitchen.

See what I mean Northy.

I've told you before Mad Lad. I don't claim benefits. I know the concept of investments wouldn't concern someone like you who is only fit for washing dishes or slicing meat off the kebab stick but don't judge everyone's intellect by your lack of it. If you don't understand that ask castor to explain it next time he is slipping you one while telling you space stories.

Hiding behind his curtains & sleeping while we the tax payer fund his bank account!

O what a disgrace,
O what a shame.
He lies to our face,
Sez others are to blame!

That knocking on the back of your head is your brain cell trying to get back in. Don't open up.
