Odds now down to 6/1, getting 19% in the last proper poll and many people I talk to here seem to be voting for them.
Bizarrely it also appears that Labour supporters (and there aren't that many outside the Town centre) will be tactically voting for the Anti Europeans.

Todays unscientific poll from the Daily Echo is as follows ...
Lib Dem 21.9% Conservative 21.5% UKIP 17.9% Labour 11.8% Others 4.9% Will not vote 22%

"should be fun watching the Tory contenders trying to out-neanderthal each other to demonstrate their Farage-beating credentials."

Call it neanderthal if you want, but the fact is significant amounts of the electorate are fed up with the EU, liberal attitudes to crime, excessive government spending, uncontrolled immigration and the Human Rights Act.

The politicians just might have to adapt to what the electorate want.  While Eastleigh was bad for Cameron, it was also a disaster for the Left.

Come on TT. If by the "Left" you mean Labour, They were no-hopers at the outset, and despite a clown of a candidate marginally increased their share.

It was a disaster for one Party, and one party only. The Tories think the Party consists of the City and their business pals; there are a plenty of tories on average incomes, pensioners reliant on savings who have been totally screwed; while Gideon and Dave have looked after the top rate tax payers. Dave's EC policy was hollow; nobody was fooled. That is why UKIP did so well.

I still think they are too arrogant to take the message on board.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 March 1, 2013 6:28 PM GMT
The tories are in a mess and UKIP may well sneak up and steal their thunder. If the electorate as java alludes to are ready to embrace more right of centre policies then they may cast their vote with the party who has been saying that all along rather than going for a party who just follow public opinion.

The worrying thing for labour must be that people are disillusioned with the coalition parties but havent switched votes to them. This is the second by-election where UKIP have been the big winners. One nation labour obviously doesn't include eastleigh.

If the Tories can't come to an agreement with UKIP before the next GE (and that maybe difficult with Dave as leader) the Tories cant win imo, and will certainly lose seats which will certainly concentrate the minds of Tory MPs in marginal seats.

I am not certain a swing Right is what the Tories need.

A bit of decisiveness instead of U turns or constant kicking the problems down the road might help.

An understanding and a modicum of empathy with the electotae might help. Despite what Gideon, Dave etc. think the Tories are not all about high earning bankers and people gutted about paying 50% tax. The majority are pensioners with moderate savings, people on slightly above average incomes, and savers. All have been screwed to help the tories bale out their City backers.

not a single penny has been paid by Osborne or Cameron to bankers, the bailouts were all before 2010.

of course Northern Rock should not have received a penny, of course forcing a good bank to take over a bad bank and dumping it on the taxpayer was a bad move, but it is over, is not important in the current mess, and all predates 2010.

Couple it with a Tax reduction for High earners and you get an Eastleigh. The Tory strength was in the local party support, the YCs etc. Dave and Gideon have lost that.

Plenty of Hedge Funds do, and quoted companies.
Of course, the baling out took place under New Labour, the subsequent QE , Operation Merlin etc. that have deflated saver's returns (the bit RR omitted) have been coalition productions.
I believe that this plus the proposed abolition of the Age Allowance has impacted the Tories' core support' pensioners with often modest nest eggs; that was my key point.

Just to clarify, I have always stated that I blame the Blair/Brown regime's incompetence equally with the bank's incompetence. I have always stated that the failure to instigate a proper investigation is mainly/entirely to do with political expediency.

you said bail out the bankers

My eyes aren't good Ronnie but I thought i said bail out "City backers". I mentioned bankers in the preceding sentence in another context.

If "bail out" is synonomous with bankers; let us replace it with subsidise, feed or keep afloat.

I was referring to the various companies involved with rail, road transport, care. power, defence, job finding, recruitment, training , security and all the other "service providers".

They have by and large one client, who doesnt worry about poor performance, failure to meet targets, or price. The client simply borrows more money; and a Whitehall department "manages" the account.
There are 18 different "jobfinders" currently on the payroll, all 18 have failed to hit the target i.e. perform as well as the pre-outsourced dept.

We have announced massive redundancies in the armed Forces; and simultaneously outsourced billiob pound recruitment and training programmes.

Dave might find A4E and their kind an "inspiration".

If we are to contain our borrowing my view is that we get to grips with these companies; and the Civil Servants who supposedly look after interests.

Party donations and sponsorship; jobs for ex Civil Servants; and the taxpayer getting poor value for money.

Yes, the harder you work the luckier you get

Is the man who gets more holes in one in the Majors working harder than the guy who is one behind.

i took the 'old hrb ratings' and tweaked about with them, and kept back-testing using the system builder engine.

example all handicap hurdles 2003/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12.

i did this until the ratings were profitable again, ive made a decent job of them, now im downloading a month at a times worth of results since jan 1st 2010 , blending them with the bfsp daily downloads, and reformatting to a format i find pleasing on the eye, i go thru them adding columns 'rank' 'points diff to next ranked' and then internal rating 'ranks'
they only deal in a horses last 3 runs form wise, then theres several other criteria.

i feel they over value non finishers last time out, giving them 88 percent of benchmark, especially if the non finish was in a high grade race, it class has a different benchmark, this and several other things is why i have been prepared to do 4/6 hours a day sheet-work on them, for 6 months, to cut out the bad value bets they produce, therefore increasing roi on the rest.

im confident of around 114 roi, on 25,000 bets per annum top rated that meet set criterias, and bet for churn.

now to me, bankers are synonomous with the City and the word bail out.  of course there are accountancy firms, insurers, money brokers, actuaries in the City, but none of these have ever been bailed out, they are solvent.

to say you meant bailing out the City backers you were not referring to bankers but

I was referring to the various companies involved with rail, road transport, care. power, defence, job finding, recruitment, training , security and all the other "service providers".

is ridiculous.  the kants painting lines on roads, doing touchy toes tests to spassies on incapacity, and wiping a$$es in care homes on government pay are not based in the City or employed by "city backers".

you meant banks and the various related financial markets flotsam.  why else say "bail out their City backers".  that has f all to do with the above italicized list.

Manxy,

hrb - would that be horseracebase.com?

They give three day free trial as well if its them.
I'll probably give them a go.
I'd be looking at races where the ratings agree with my own ratings.

look at this, somebody lecturing a forum on how they get luckier as they work harder, greedily grabbing the lure of random people offering them easy winnings.

it does make me laugh, but underneath it i also get a frisson of grim satisfaction.

because such is the desparation that comes across from this excitement of a random tipline, it must mean someone is late on rent, and his heavily leveraged, insolvent "portfolio" of crud is not providing the lucre that was promised him by the spiky haired kant in the realtor office.

maybe one of his tenants asked for a new plug socket, and such is his interest repayments it took away his razor thin margin.  i do seem to remember him frothing about having to use an electrician under law.

a dog that has just had its throat ripped out by a wolf tends not to be able to bite back.

there is a whistling effect, but it is silent.

It's not a tipline is it manxy.

I understand that its a programme that generates ratings, and you can adjust the weightings of the criteria to suit yourself.

Is that it manxy?

I wonder what the hillbilly gambles on?

He must gamble on something or he wouldn't be here.

Come on hillbilly let's have it?
Report manxy March 3, 2013 9:35 PM GMT
yeah, a ratings engine, that will rate a race on all the set criteria, whether the race was 10yrs ago or tomorrow, there is no back-fitting involved.

horseracebase.
Report Dr Crippen March 3, 2013 9:37 PM GMT
manxy that sounds very useful.
Report Dr Crippen March 3, 2013 9:42 PM GMT
yes I've seen the ratings you've put up, and bearing in mind that any set of ratings will produce winners, they seem a lot more consistent than that.

I suppose your own knowledge is reflected there.

The hillbilly's gone quiet.

I remember the episode where the Beverly Hillbillys went to the races.

I can just picture RR as Jed Clampett – wee doggies!

Lol

i  love numbers doc, playing the market, if i could churn 50k bets with a 108 roi, whilst compounding, i would be quite happy, thats a very healthy nett long term margin.

"It was bad for the on the left Lib dems? They won did they not? After a week of horrendous publicity they won!Fks sake."

Not really sure where to go with this as it seems you don't even understand percentages.

If the Tories held some leafy southern constituency with a massively reduced margin in a by-election would you say it was a good night for them?
Report blackburn1 March 4, 2013 9:07 AM GMT
It was a bad result for everybody.

50% turnout, everybody except UKIP saw a big drop and UKIP still can't win a seat. Elections are becoming more and more pointless

"Have the kids who got a place at Eton worked harder for it; than the kid at Peckham Comprehensive."

Almost certainly.  Although it's not the Peckham kid's fault - just his environment.  The privately educated kid will be putting in more hours of diligence though by a massive margin, largely due to the pressure of parents.
Report Mister E March 4, 2013 9:47 AM GMT
Agree 100% java.
Although it's not the Peckham kid's fault - just his environment

Exactly and his environment is no reflection on him not being lucky because he didnt work hard enough.

Parental influence is a major factor; but we don't choose our parents.

The kid in Peckham may have worked his nuts off between the ages of 4 and 11, but it is not reflected in his failure to get to Eton. Any more than the Eton pupil's school is reflected in him having worked harder.

By and large luck is precisely that.

I admire all who are born with less advantages and work their way out of it.
Report treetop March 4, 2013 7:25 PM GMT
So don't we all Mister E. Where many ofus differ is the inclination to skew our education system to push kids forward on their envronment rather than proven ability. I know this can be debatable but I abhor discrimination, even the so called positive discrimination for wimmin, etc.
