I'm sure we can all think of a few of these, but it's uncomfortable to admit you were wrong. How many forumites will be prepared to cough up to making a "misjudgement"? I'll start the ball rolling:
A national lottery will be a tax on the poor. What nonsense I thought at the time, people can decide whether or not they want to buy a ticket. I now see that, if you haven't got much, the temptation to spend £1 on the dream of untold riches is too great, to the point that some people would let their children go hungry.
Mobile phones will never catch on I said (except for people that really need them like doctors and plumbers and so on): people will tire of endlessly talking nonsense. When that turned out to be spectacularly wrong I assured everyone that people would never want to watch films and telly on that tiny little screen.
A small amount of dope is harmless I parrotted, never having partaken myself (tried, but just can't cope with smoke of any kind). The evidence now available makes me feel very lucky.
Ed Milliband. I thought he'd be a poor leader, but he has won me round over time. Shame about those around him though.
The opposite with Osbourne. Thought he'd be a strong chancellor but I think he is weak. Perhaps not weak in terms of vision, but weak in being able to make Cameron and Clegg see sense.

A few changes of heart will just be down to maturation.
I slagged off T20 cricket when it first came about. Saw a little bit of it on telly a couple of weeks ago: it's not cricket, but it is watchable sport - I take it back.

If memory serves me well, I have never back tracked on anything. The trick is not to come to absolute conclusions until you’ve studied & thought in lengthy detail about all the evidence. Also taking into account all the implications & future possible political social & economic changes - quantum effects. So I rarely come to an absolute conclusion about anything. Bookies are rich through people who do.
The last time I did come to an absolute conclusion - that the pending War on Iraq was based on a completely false premise and that the war would be a disaster, most disagreed & said that they had to invade. I of course was proved right.
As for the lottery being a tax. Taxes have to be paid, lottery tickets don't have to be bought & for some poor that are now millionaires, I bet they wish all taxes were so beneficial.

I used to think MPs should be paid more (honestly). I worked in a job where I came into contact with many of them and believed most of them worked hard and were often unfairly characterised as lazy, attention seeking know-it-alls. (For example I used to feel sorry for them when the press presented each recess as a holiday when in fact the vast majority continued to work hard in their constituencies).
However, I don't do the same job anymore and have a bit more distance from the political process. I now despair when I hear 99% of politicians in the media spouting the party lines, squabbling and generally behaving with almost complete contempt from 'ordinary people'. I've come to the conclusion there is at least 100 too many of them, they get incredible pensions and benefits and they don't deserve a pay rise at all.
I also despair that so few of them have done a proper job in their lives - not least when they rise to the highest office in all three major parties. It has been noticeable during these hard times just how lightweight and inadequate our politicians have become over the past 15\20 years. They are without principle or honour and are merely opportunists without any original ideas or conviction. Deeply depressing. I've joined the sceptics.

I used to be a Tory. I used to believe in superstring theory. I used to believe the EEC/EU was a good idea. I used to believe we somehow had the right to interfere in others' lives.

Not a precise subject but i've been a member of Parti Socialiste in my youth and then became gradually right-side (this year i voted Sarkozy for president of France and Johnson for mayor of London). My experiences in the world of work is what have changed my mind, i realized some people deserve to be rewarded more than others.

Agree entirely sib, he was a fool for getting involved with the ghastly Currie which tarnished a very understated time as PM.
He spoke at a cricket lunch I was at a couple of years ago, very funny and entertaining with great anecdotes, especially about Yeltsin, a million miles away from the image conscious college kids we're stuck with now.

people have this image of him at it with grey hair in No 10, not true at all.
great man.but he got nowhere near Currie when PM.it was an on-off sex thing 1984 to 1988.people have this image of him at it with grey hair in No 10, not true at all.
i did not believe trillion dollar bailouts would be "praised" as a good solution, that they would look to impose socialism to "cure" capitalism.
i did not believe people would give an American president continuing with military occupations a peace prize.
i thought Herman Cain would get the Republican nomination. i discounted Mitt Romney totally.
i thought people would react in a right wing way to the crisis, realise the problem was too much tax harming production, and too much spending imposing such a burden on the worker. i fear now that the left will win the debate, the rich will be taxed, as will the middle and the poor, and that industry will be nationalised to try and fund the government spending machine.
