right, I am a long time NL holdem player that has started to play Omaha, and no abuse please, but I have been trying to work out a few things. Now in NL Holdem, I know that if I am dealt a pocket pair, then I am roughly for argument sake 8% likely to make trips on the flop. So I figure Omaha is the same, if I hold a pocket pair, I am still only 8% likely to make trips for any pocket pair that I am dealt. The difference is that I am more likely to have been dealt a pocket pair, by my reckoning, about 3 times as likely to have been dealt a pocket pair, I could be wrong.
Now the issue that has me thinking, is how likely is my opponents of making trips on the flop, it has to be more than 8%, because I dont know their hole cards, I have to factor in that they are more likely to be holding themselves a pocket pair.
So thats my issue, is the chances of me making my hands...... I say are the same as NL Holdem, but the chances my opponents make their hands are greater than NL Holdem.
No abuse please in case I am missing something obvious here. I have been searching with google, cant find many helpful websites, if you know of any, that would be greatly appreciated.
i dont realy play omaha but uve got 45 cards in play if ur on a 10 seat table well 40 then 5 for board but in omaha theres more chance of hitting because any player could have 2 pocket pairs so that will increase the chances of hitting a set. flushes str8ts and fullhouses seem very common in omaha as well for sites try typing in poker stratagy loads of sites from there

thanks guys, what I have read pretty much ties in with how I have been playing. i.e play strong starting hands..... keep reevaluating, what is the possible nuts....... can my hand make the nuts......... what is my opponents possible hands........ etc. how many outs do I have to improve my hand, will I be dominated even if I hit etc. this is what you need to be always thinking.
My current strategy has been all about pot control, hands are never as strong as they appear, so keep pots small, and dont be afraid of folding.

Always be wary you can flop the nuts and still be 2nd favourite to win the hand in some circumstances especially with you having the straight when they can have fluch draws and higher straight redraws.
Untill you fully understand the mechanics then your method of pot control in keeping the pots small is a good one, you may not maximise your wins but you will go busto far less often.
The fact that you are obviously thinking about it and trying to theorise your hands bodes well for the future.

an update if anyone is interested. I am only playing small stakes, i.e 5c 10c pot limit and I have been having a few ups and downs, but I think you can expect greater variance in omaha as you would in texas holdem. well I am slowly making a profit, and have seen lots of terrible players, perhaps not that experienced at omaha. I am not claiming to have it nailed, but if you want to try it for yourselves, its not that hard to make it pay. You just have to be better than average, and believe me, some players play every hand, and don't have fold buttons.
