http://betting.betfair.com/poker/poker-news/david-shallow-wins-world-poker-tour-ireland-main-e-090112.html

Rewind to five or six years ago and David “Dubai” Shallow was tipped for a massive future in the game and touted as one of the best up and coming poker players of his generation. He had gained quite the reputation in online poker circles for being extremely aggressive and was a formidable opponent in heads up sit 'n' go tournament with buy-ins ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Fast forward to today and although he still makes a living from this crazy game and has a massive $600,000+ score from the 2010 WCOOP, Shallow has never really had a breakthrough in the lie tournament area. That is until now. Because you see, Mr Shallow is the latest person to become a World Poker Tour champion after taking down the inaugural WPT Ireland Main Event at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

Shallow had been amongst the chip leaders since Day 2 and his friend “KingHawko” Tweeted to me on Saturday morning that “The guy is a machine with chips, It's all over!” and how correct his prediction was. Shallow went into the final table armed with more than 60% of the chips in play thanks to a double elimination right at the death of the penultimate day's play, on the final table bubble. Here is pair of jacks cracked the pocket queens of Shaun Conning and the aces of Steven Moreau when he turned a set after all three players were all in preflop! When the dust had settled after that hand Shallow had a stack of 6,115,000 chips from the 10,140,000 that were in play.

WPT Ireland Final Table Seat Draw

Seat 1: Steve Watts: 1,345,000
Seat 2: Patrik Vestlin:1,070,000
Seat 3: Charles Chattha: 835,000
Seat 4: David Shallow: 6,115,000
Seat 5: Ronan Gilligan: 775,000

Play started with the blinds at Level 26 meaning they were 20,000/40,000/5,000a so it did not take very long at all for the short stacks to start splashing around and getting their chips into the middle. Thirty minutes into proceedings a preflop raising war between Ronan Gilligan (CO) and Steve Watts (SB) broke out that resulted in Watts being all in and at risk with a pair of tens against the ace-king of his Irish opponent. The tens stayed ahead on the Qh-Jh-7s-9s board but then improved to a set of ten when the 10d landed on the river which also improved Gilligan to a hand winning straight.

Four become three minutes later when Patrik Vestlin was sent to the rail by Gilligan. After a raise and a call the pair got their chips in on an all spade flop reading 9s-7s-3s with Gilligan holding Js9d to the Swede's AsQc. The dealer burned a card before putting the 10c out on the turn which many though was a spade but alas it was not. Neither was the 8c on the river and each of the surviving players were only two eliminations away from WPT glory.

The home crowd were becoming increasingly vocal due to the fact Gilligan was looking unstoppable but they were silenced when Shallow took out their hero. All the chips went in on a flop reading 10x-5x-2x with Shallow's Td9d being the best hand but needing to avoid an ace or six as Gilligan had 4h3d in his hand. Shallow did indeed fade the open-ended straight draw to take the WPT Ireland Main Event to the heads up stage.

Shallow's heads-up opponent was the Hit Squad member Charles Chattha, a talented tournament player with more than $700,000 in cashes to his name. From the start it looked like it was going to be the Shallow show thanks to him starting the one-on-one encounter with a 7,280,000 to 2,860,000 chip advantage but Chattha fought his way back into contention and even took a slender lead when his QcQs held up against Ks3s all in preflop.

Chattha was well-supported by friends and family on the rail but their presence just was not enough to see their boy home. The final hand took place around two and a half hours after the day had begun and was a cooler hand when one considers the images of both players. With blinds of 30,000/60,000/10,000a Shallow opened to 140,000 only to see Chathha three-bet to 360,000. Shallow paused before four-betting to 600,000. Chattha obviously did not believe him as he moved all in but looked sick to his stomach when Shallow snap-called and revealed a pair of queens which completely crushed his nines. The board ran out a rather drama-less Kc-Kh-2d-8s-3s and with that Chattha rose from his seat and shook Shallow's hand who then stood himself and saluted his friends on the rail.

Most poker players would jump straight into the next major tournament and try to ride the crest of the wave but it is highly unlikely we will be seeing Shallow on the live circuit in the next few months due to the fact his partner is seven months pregnant with Shallow Jr and so he does not want to stray too far from home.

Congratulations to David Shallow, WPT Ireland champion and a father-to-be to boot!

Thanks for messages but last time I checked I was banned from playing here, so not sure "regular" is a very appropriate word unless Hayleys Comet is regularly seen. Obviously if you want to confirm I'm no longer banned then I will open a new account :)
