I didn't buy the tracker software or odds calculators. However, I did download poker tracker on trial a couple of weeks ago.
The most startling fact was the straight line graph of my losses. The straight line of my losses shows I am not only a bad player but that I am consistently bad! :)
I don't mind losing a bit because I play for fun, but I would like the chance of getting on a roll every now and then. Anyone got any tips for sites that can give you the basics for playing for fun, preferably PLO? I have looked at a couple of vids and at PLO on poker after dark (for amusement rather than education) but I am not improving much.
On the other hand, is somebody who plays for fun on a small screen (i.e. only one table at a time) guaranteed to lose because it is just to boring to play smart?
One last thing. I saw Phil Galfond of TV fame saying that a lot of guys lose their ability to concentrate when they play a lot of poker. I need to be able to concentrate for my real job where I make real money. Is there a risk to playing online poker for a couple of hours at a time?
You get out what you put in as with most things in life. There are no shortcuts. If you cant win playing one table against folk playing 7 or 8 it sounds like you need to learn the basics, because you wont be going on a roll anytime soon.
I'd start by learning Hold Em before PLO. That means reading both Sklansky and Harrington cover to cover. You can pick these books up dirt cheap second hand online. If you actually read them properly it will be the best poker money you ever spend.
Once you have learnt the maths, its then just a case of starting at a level you can win at consistently and working your way up.

in general, i have found that playing poker has increased my ability to concentrate for longer, but only if playing a few tables, say 9 max, and not trying to do something else
BUT, i am male, and like most males i cannot multitask too well, therefore playing poker AND talking to the wife AND watching TV AND etc etc then i find i become rubish at all on the list
however, reading between the lines of your posts you seem to make money while sat behind a monitor, and play a game of poker as a side diversion, and if, as you say, you make real money and play poker for a little fun, then losing a little, while enjoying yourself, isnt a bad thing, and can often be a lot cheaper than a night out drinking/going for a meal/cinema etc.
basically, if you want to improve your poker game you have to concentrate on the poker, read some good books, and dedicate time to it. but if you play just for recreation, play low stake single or multi table tournies, and have some fun. and maybe go out to a local casino one night and pla ya live game, its slower, but i find the social factor enjoyable (for my one live game a month i treat myself to)
depends what you are talking about really.in general, i have found that playing poker has increased my ability to concentrate for longer, but only if playing a few tables, say 9 max, and not trying to do something elseBUT, i am male, and like most ma
Even if you are just playing for fun, learning about the game will probably make the experience more pleasurable.
Essentially you are just making, or taking, an ongoing series of bets, and if you want to win long term, it is absolutely vital you get value for those bets. Every time you enter a pot you need to have a good reason for doing so, and you need to be ensuring you have a positive expectation.

if your poker tracker is still working try the stuff on this page and then you could read their PLO forums in the links down the side if you wanted.http://archives1.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=4946669&an=0&page=0#Post4946669
No point watching videos. Making a move with 62 offsuit is no use if your opponent calls all day long. Try and work out your opponents, judge what they are capable of, and take it from there. Watching while not involved in a pot is indeed boring, but concentration and patience will be rewarded over time.
Good luck to you Nicanor.

Was talking to a kid at a house party last week who was telling me online poker must be r1gg3d as he is a really good player but he never wins as much as he should.Which means he is probably losing, though one of his mates said he had won £2 grand in a live MTT at the local casino. He asks me how come whenever people on T.V. go all in with crap everyone folds but it never works online.
After talking to him for about 20 minutes I had established he didn't know what odds he was to flop a flush with 2 suited hole cards, or a set when he had a pair. I asked him what he knew about implied odds and he looked at me like I was talking a foreign language. To cut a long story short he watched poker on television once a week for about 6 months and reckoned he knew all there was to know.
