perhaps he could have floated something like JT and reads your check as weakness and is trying to represent the ace, its hard to see what else he has there that you are beating but i'm not sure i like the check on the river either... you've left yourself a tough decision.

Snap CALL - he has air or a hand he has just turned into air way enough to call that. The bet sizing on the river also makes me think he has air. He is betting enough to make you lay down your hand but leaving an amount back you dont think he can fold for but of course he can and that makes the bet more valuale ;)

The smaller bet sizing rather than just shoving makes me think that he has you beat. Usually when people are bluffing they bet a bit more so that you don't make a curiosity call. Assuming he is a good player too then surely he would check behind his qj/kj/j10 type hands.
