his bet makes little sense, but when i do call i usually see a novel hand that crushes me

I think you are behind way way more often then you catch him at it.
i dont play cash but why not just check river... is he gonna call with ak aq is that the reason or is it to get him to fold small pair ?
I'm either re-raisng his flop bet or throwing.
You've gone set mining and missed.
If he flats my reraise then I see what he does on the turn and then and then either bet out if checks or fold if he puts in a decent size bet......

Why have you bet the river? He probably calls with any pair.
Check down the river.
You should always know what you will do if check raised.
You've made a terrible and needless raise by (I'm assuming), putting villain on AKo, AQo type of hand. Runner, runner flush is a possiblility, and don't get me started on the paired board......
