I used to play regularly here at small stakes mtt and did ok but got fed up. Now I play when the notion takes me at the same level and have been doing very well. Is there a case here for playing when you wish to play and are in the right mindset or is it pure luck?

this is not an observation of the present site situation, merely welcoming honest opinions.

used to sit and play most evenings and automatically kept going as stakes were low but didn't really enjoy it, now i enjoy it much more but only when i feel i want to play.

but last night looking for a quickish game entered the non-turbo holdem by mistake! Was playing for 4 and a half hours and got second though.

There is something in what you say. You do need to be in the right mindset to make money at poker. If you are not then you can lose money very quickly.

I find it is best playing in the morning when your brain is fresh. Playing late at night you might feel you are OK but in reality you are probably missing a lot of opportunities, and even possibly occasionally folding hands when you fail to spot you have made a straight etc.

If you have a run of bad beats it can affect your play, and a rest is in order. Similarly if you have a run of outrageous good luck you might get overconfident and kick off a bout of reckless play.
