finding it difficult with a big current downswings in mtts. Was on a 2 month downswing in cash and mtts before the cash turned this month. However mtts are still giving me big headaches with absurd suckouts and all manner of sick sht happening, an example from last night was flopping a set of queens on an AQ10 board against pocket sixes and splitting the pot after J on turn and K on river - he was 1.86% to split this pot lol

anyway - it has been 3 months since I won an mtt and have only had a 2nd place and two fourth places in the last month from around 50 mtts.

take a brake?

i would have thought a 2nd place and 2 4ths makes for a decent roi out of 50 games, are these short fields
Report richpickns January 20, 2010 6:19 PM GMT
the 2nd was only for $480 lol!

I always jump around sites, stars for the outlay offers grt FT payouts but those 12ths 24ths from 3k fields can really get you down,so i like to mix up my games with fulltilt where 600 deep fields are fairly easy to find and ipoker as 200/300 deep fields are common and help keep your chin up as FTs are so easy to make but not big scores.

I'm going thro it myself at the moment. There is only one answer to this. You need to stay well within your bankroll to see the losing run thro. I must have done £1000 in the last week buying in for average $10 - $20 buyins, so the money can soon add up even with relatively small stakes. I keep records, which helps, as it shows me that I have been thro it all before and, up until now have always pulled thro. Unfortunately these losing runs can go on a hell of a long time. My worse has been 3 months where I lost £3000, then nearly got the whole lot back in 1 night, coming 2nd in a big mtt and winning a big mtt on BF. I think how you cope with these losing runs is the biggest single factor in any form of gambling, not just poker, and the subject that is least talked about. It's very unnerving and distressing t, because you begin to wonder if it is bad luck or bad play, and can lead to a vicious circle where bad luck begins to make you play bad or send you on tilt.

good post McCoy

agree 100% about bankroll - I have dropped down to just playing $25/30 rebuys and freezeouts and have been satelliting into $100 mtts. Fortunately I have had some good $30 and $50 stts results to make me break evenish for the month. thank god for cash because i would go mad just playing mtts - it is soul destroying stuff a lot of the time

I gave up. No more downswings. The game is a complete waste of time.
Report aristonandon January 20, 2010 8:58 PM GMT
had 2 big downswings in novemeber and december in cash running -4k ev and -5k ev respectively.

jan is going better but i play same way every day and my last 4 days have been +500 +1700 -600 -1200. downswings happen and ive found its just better to quit for the day and come back tomorrow to fight again- keep doing the right things and good things will happen eventually.

apparently the best way to beat the variance is to play more games - if your getting it in ahead on a regular basis then by playing more games the odds of winning each hand should become closer to the odds expected to win the hand

I think the standard of play has plateaud with many new players improving and reaching a similar high level of play hence making it not so easy to win.

Don't move up or down levels. Keep getting it in with the best hand. And eat a lot of fish to keep the old brain topped up (seriously).

I've been getting a lot of AA recently (tiny MTTs) but this happened near the money with an average stack. He raised about 5 BBs, I re-raised all-in another 18 BBs, and he called.

My AA V 42o
Flop 88J
Then 22

After the flop he was 0.6%.

Play on ipoker. Standard is about ten times worse thanb full tilt and stars. Betfair has pretty bad standard too- you will get to a final table and see a regular do somethign and think wtf.

Play:
Bf 12k 8.15
eye 7.5k 10.20
eye 10.45
eye 5k 12midnight

One thing I don't get is that you say you satellite into 100$fos but play 30$ rebuys! If you are running bad or low on confidence do not play rebuys. If you have been losing a lot then losing a couple of rebuys can put you on tilt (even if only slightly so you don't realise) and before you know it you're down 300. After all a 30$ rebuy is kinda a 60$ rebuy cause you can double rebuy.

Give it up, or play like that Gnasher8 dude, 20 hours/day, super turbo sit n go, never play a hand until u get a big one, or ure forced to call now ure lowstack, outdribble the opponent with crap, betfair likes ure cakeeffort, and you given positive variance.

i had a job and took voluntary redundancy which was a blessing. Now I am playing poker to pay the bills and avoid dipping into the pay off money. Beats the fk out of 9-5 (really 6 nowadays) work!
Report Dooberama January 23, 2010 9:18 PM GMT
Prrtey much agree with James, it makes no sense to sat into $100 freezes and play $30 rebuys. FWIW MTT variance is a bit ch. Play on bf if you want to cut down on variance. The lower size fields work wonders on variance reduction. My st ars and ip oker graphs are 45 degree downslope with the odd big jump up followed by 45 degree downslope.

The only problem with playing on bf is the roi reduction that comes with all the turbos and small fields.....

When I go on a downswing, I stop playing for a few months.
Report Semi Skimmed Milk January 24, 2010 2:38 PM GMT
I give it a break for a week - that's normally enough.

Carry on if you have the bankroll and discipline, but there's no point just soldiering on if you're tilting.
