can verbally declare what you like, though your best off sticking to amounts that are at least double the previous raiser or upto the max number of *****you have left.

to add you can only bet in increments of the min chip denomination on the table at the time.

THANKS FOR REPLY

so if blinds are say 100/200

then can raise to say 450, dont have to bet 400/600 etc

thanks

can i ask a quick question which may seem stupid but i aint certain of the answer.if im playin a live tourney and the river card has just been dealt and i bet with air and the other person calls me,do i have to show my cards if he requests to or can i decide to muck them and concede the hand??
Report JPJ January 8, 2010 3:09 AM GMT
If i was your opponent then i'd be happy for you to muck and would never ask to see your hand. but i would also push my cards face down so don't expect to see mine. If you're ever going to ask 'me' to show my hand then have the curtisy to show your hand as you are the one that has been called.

but do i have to show my hand if they insist on seeing it?cant i muck it and say well done good call?
Report Six of Clubs January 8, 2010 7:53 AM GMT
if you are bluffing with complete air and get called you always have the option to muck straight away. if you do that make sure the dealer mucks your hand or it touches the muck, preferably in such a way that your cards aren't just sitting on top.

technically your opponent can ask to see your cards, and some places will allow them to be shown if they can be easily identified from the muck (ie sitting on top or just touching it).

if you sit there with your cards after being called etiquette is that you show your hand first, but often you can declare i have nothing then usually your opponent will show their hand to claim the pot and you can muck at that stage.

so theres no official stance on weather i have to showor not,its just up to me to get them mixed up in the mucked cards before im asked to show them

is weird JPJ cause at the VIC you have to show to claim a pot so you wouldn't be able to do that.

All that hard work with the capital letters, full stops and apostrophe's then you go and spoil it with that thing lol.

...................................

This is something that is the 'hot topic' at our club at the moment. The reason being is that a hand that took place between myself and another player a long while ago is still discussed and people still argue about it.
In the hand we were heads up on the flop. I check/called. The turn also went check... bet...call.... On the river i checked, he bet, i called and he mucked. I dragged the pot and slid my cards face down into the muck. He demanded to see my hand. I told him that i called him so he should have shown, which would have meant that i would have to show if i could beat him and wanted to claim the pot. He then stated that because it was a showdown then i had to show to claim the pot, i stated (And correctly imho) that as i was the last person in the hand holding a 'live' hand then according to the rules of poker i'm the winner of the hand even without showing my cards as the pot has to be awarded to me.
He wasn't happy, called floor who then ruled in my favour, but the person who now runs the poker room states that a hand must be shown in my situation. When i explained my points that i was the only person who could win as no body was left in the hand and would like to know who he would award the pot to if i just mucked then he came out with the usual 'I don't understand how poker works answer'...... It's because players could be colluding and passing *****:^0

i think a lot of people get confused with the " have to show two cards to claim a pot " ruling
IMHO this ruling is where it actually goes to a showdown and prevents people just flashing the one card
in the instances quoted by the OP and JPJ, the player that has been called has to show his cards and mucking them means he relinquishes any hope of the pot , the caller is the only person left with live cards so once the dealer is aware of this and awards the pot then there is no need whatsoever to show and no one should be allowed to demand to see them
