Following on from the success of the Bolt vs Taylor thread I thought I'd compile a list of the true greats to see who we think is the overall best ever.

This list is not exhaustive btw

Michael Schumacher FI
Tiger Woods Golf
Roger Federer Tennis
Tony McCoy Horse racing
Stephen Hendry Snooker
Usain Bolt Athletics
Sergey Bubka Pole Vault
Phil Taylor Darts
Babe Ruth Baseball
Wayne Gretsky Ice Hockey
Brett Favre American Football
Pele Football
Michael Phelps Swimming
Al Oetner Hammer throwing
Don Bradman Cricket
Phil Hellmuth Poker
Kareem Abdul Jabar Basketball
Muhammad Ali Boxing
Steve Redgrave Rowing

All of these have dominated their sports but which one is truly the greatest?

If I've missed anyone then add them to the list, I couldn't remember the romanian gymnast's name and I'm sure there are probably world class Table Tennis and Badminton players who've dominated who I don't know and maybe some weight lifters.

I've also only put one in from each sport for now.

Michael Schumacher FI - Car racing, never met a decent bloke that ever watched 2 minutes of that shiiiitte.
Tiger Woods Golf - Jack Nicholas has more majors than him, you talking about dominating birds?
Roger Federer Tennis - Do me a favour, aint won enough and no one watches it bar woman and **sexuals.
Tony McCoy Horse racing - Needs an orse to win and never won grand national.
Stephen Hendry Snooker - Up there but embarassing himself by not retiring.
Usain Bolt Athletics - Discredited `sport', world record holder `wow wee'.
Sergey Bubka Pole Vault - Nice name, comedy entry.
Phil Taylor Darts - Nailed on surely.
Babe Ruth Baseball - Fat slugger, catchey name, no chance.
Wayne Gretsky Ice Hockey - Only weirdos in canada (negreanu ffs) watch it. Grow up.
Brett Favre American Football - Like a decent former glories footballer who begs for a contract every summer from lower league clubs.
Pele Football - Brilliant at times but God awful on others.
Michael Phelps Swimming - Do me a favour, apartheid sport.
Al Oetner Hammer throwing - Wtf.
Don Bradman Cricket - Up there but team games cant count.
Phil Hellmuth Poker - Greatest hold em tournament player of all time, better entrance to world championships than boxers, coaches world champion contenders. Just behind Taylor.
Kareem Abdul Jabar Basketball - Got a chance if only the taleban can vote.
Muhammad Ali Boxing - Most overarrated `champion' of them all.
Steve Redgrave Rowing - Lump who crambled over line in team sport every 4 years in the least popular sport imaginable.

1) Taylor.
2) Hellmuth.
3) Hendry.
Report "M" January 3, 2010 1:16 PM GMT
Lance Armstrong - cycling, although another sport ruined by drugs, coming back from testicular cancer and then winning is still an amazing feat

Keneth Bell Plum you really are a PLUM! Taylor best sporting legend haha yes good one- hey it'sadmirable but still shouldn't even be on sky SPORTS. Look at what constitues a sport if you are going to come on a forum and hammer peoples ideas u idiot. I'll give you a clue- physical prowess and physical endeavour- When was the last time Phil Taylor got physical with anything more than a sausage roll. As for Helmtuh talk about an exclusive sport- people say that rowing is elitist and your talking bout an activity where you cant sit down next to Helmuth unless you have 6 figures in your bank. Be careful throwing stones in glass houses old pal!

Moses was a good shout if talking about domination.
Redgrave gotta be up there with golds in 4 Olympis is it?
Taylor has to be up there also.
Can't include team players imo

was Desert Orchid male? lol

Jahinger Khan - Squash: 555 games unbeaten over 5 years.
Far more than Taylor ever achieved and a proper sport where weighing 20 stone is a disadvantage.

Michael Schumacher FI Fastest car wins, he may have been the best but in a sport so reliant on equipment - no way
Tiger Woods Golf Best of his generation yes but totally dominant - no.
Roger Federer Tennis Not even the greatest of all time so no.
Tony McCoy Horse racing The greatest jump jockey ever but how many people can be jockeys? so no!
Stephen Hendry Snooker Thought we said sportsmen?
Usain Bolt Athletics The fastest and easily the most dominant sprinter in modern times but has not achieved as much yet as Michael Johnson did at 400 metres
Sergey Bubka Pole Vault Better than the 20 people in the world who pole vault?
Phil Taylor Darts I admire his dominance and brilliance but darts is not a sport
Babe Ruth Baseball A sport one country plays?
Wayne Gretsky Ice Hockey Surely a piisstake?
Brett Favre American Football See Babe Ruth
Pele Football Are you on crack? Not even the greatest ever footballer
Michael Phelps Swimming Best shout so far, dominant in a sport that most people at least attempt and smashes world records for fun with no equipment help!
Al Oetner Hammer throwing Just feck off!
Don Bradman Cricket Not enough people play cricket but yes probably the best cricketer ever!
Phil Hellmuth Poker
Kareem Abdul Jabar Basketball Never even heard of him and seeing as only giants can apply - no way
Muhammad Ali Boxing Only other good shout
Steve Redgrave Rowing Great man but how many people do rowing who aren't posh?
