The first GT of the season (and arguable the most exciting) rolls off in Amsterdam this Saturday.... with the inclusion of some kick ass climbs - Monte Zoncolan, Plan de Corones and the Gavia Pass - not to mention a TTT, and all top'd n tail'd with ITT's its going to be a cracker... not least because we've got a resurgent Vino back racing, Evans appearing to hit a rich vein of form, Basso back as the sole leader of team after the recent suspension of Pellizotti, and not to mention the hordes of chattering 'junkie monkeys' from the Pro Continental teams who get 3 weeks on the big stage - and a chance at a pro contract..
So.... with a few days to go - and no idea what the vampires might turn up beforehand - place your pre-race predictions..
for me, the top 5 will come from Vino, Evans, Basso, Nibali plus ANOther, and i reckon Basso is going to pip this one and take the Pink.
It's been excellent entertainment so far with Saturday's stage topping off an excellent first week of racing.
Couldn't believe Nibali had to wait for Mr half as good sonce his ban Basso yesterday but that's team orders I suppose.
Cadel, Vino, Garzelli all looked strong but Scarponi rode a good stage after crashing and I think he still has a chance in the general classmente with a lot more hills still to come.
On Cadel - riding like the world champion should be riding and it's very refreshing to see. However can't be backing him at odds on given his grand tour record. I'm sure there will be at least one to beat him, I'm just not sure who that will be at this point.
