Last year I predicted Norway to win with a huge margin, but how about this year?
First, we are not seeing any songs that is a clear winner, not anywhere near. Expect the market to change a lot ahead of the Grande Finale in Oslo.

What we can say, is that it is a lot of slow songs in the competition. Amazing amount of numbers in fact, and a lot of them are decent but will take points from each other and depending on which geograhpic area they represent.

For you who want to get on a very likely song to do good and also be able to trade a bit later, here is my prediction for the Eurovision 2010.

MOLDAVIA 40/1 William Hill (And currently higher at Betfair)

I will be surprised if this song is higher than 10/1 when it starts. In fact, for me, It is a certain Top 5.

Yes, we have heard better singers. Yes, it looks a bit like they are from the "country-side" (they are indeed) and not attending posh night clubs in London.

On the other hand, and most importantly we look at the positives....

#A song that really is different to the others.
# A saxophone hook that is the best we seen since Alexander Rybak last year (and anything prior to that)
# A stage show that clearly is one of the best, if not the best.
# A song that Balkan and the Former Soviet countries will like.
# A song that will pick up points from other countries here and there as well, since this saxophone hook is utterly brilliant.
# A typical disco song that might just work to perfection this year, when it is just too many slow songs.

I can not guarantee that this is a winner, but at 40/1 and higher, this is the best buy in my book and represent tremendous value, especially as a trading opportunity later on.

Good Luck with your bets.

poland to win...eastern european sympathy vote?
Report Saslokk May 14, 2010 1:15 PM BST
Not too long to go now, before this event kicks off. We have seen some market movers from the early prices naturally and a quick update on a few of the more likely contenders, as for now.

Azerbaijan 5/2 - Spend a few sterlings on a decent video, Safura is going around Europe and singing on different shows and the whole setup from the Swedish Team behind her, means business. The best song in the competition and all I wrote about Azerbaijan previously stands. It is an extremely likely winner, since it is guaranteed high points from so many countries. Since no other country got that + factor and the fact that the competition is so weak, this could be a comfortable victory in the end.

Germany around 4/1 - This smells place 10 or worse. Not that the song is not different and not catchy, it is. But it is not a traditional song for the competition and most of those songs (Yeah Lordi was an exception) never finish high up, unless they got a big east-block of votes behind them (Ukraine song a few years ago). Can it win? Yes it can, but I think it stands way less chance than the prices indicates. Very easily a lay for me.

Israel 8/1 - If Israel had friends, this would be right up there with Azer and I would then not be surprised to see it win. A beautiful ballad but in a language that noone understands. A dark horse in it's full meaning and can pull of a high finish. But if Europe decides Israel are not for them yet again, this wont be better than 6th-8th.

Denmark 9/1 - The winner from the ESC "official fans competition" where they predict the winner each year, from their musical taste....and though their opinion should not be underestimated, they average person voting there is not the average person voting come 2 weeks. This song is written by a well-known Swedish composer and it sounds something Sweden left 5-6 years ago in this competition. It is an ok song, sure. However, it's not brutally good and the singers lack charisma, leaving the likes of the first 3 mentioned artists looking like a young Michael Jackson. Could be worth a bet for Top 4, not more I would think.

The rest should have very little chance. Norway is a bit forgotten now, I expect that to get down from 30/1 to 20/1 before the final.

Azerbaijan has been the fav all the time and it is a very likely winner indeed.

Good Luck with your betsLaughHappy

Saslokk does it not be a concern that Azerbajjan are the first country to sing and by the time it finishes people might have forgotten about that song ..
Report ocukstinky May 29, 2010 5:47 PM BST
I can't see that Belarus one doing well to be honest. Admittedly, it really isn't bad, but the winning song's going to be something more up tempo.

Azerbaijan going 1st isn't good, I'm sure I heard that whoever went 1st has never won. Of course, tradition could be broken, but it's a long wait from 1st to last songs.

Be careful betting on Germany.  The losing semi-finalists have been voting for the past few years and a couple of years ago all just seemed to vote for those in the semi-finals (it made you wonder if they were just using their semi votes rather than doing it properly).  If that happens again, Germany won't get any points from them.

Although of course Germany will give it's 12 points to Turkey and vice-versa as always!

Also backed Germany to give their 12 to Turkey and vice-versa.

Report basil333 May 29, 2010 9:52 PM BST
That's my thoughts on Germany too - really can't see them winning due to the voting system - the lines were open from the start and she was one of the last to sing.  If people watched the semis then they may have voted long before she was on.

Still waiting for BF to settle the account, but looks like I will be just very slightly down on the evening. My main bets were for Germany Turkey and Belgium to make final 4, so I was dismayed to see Belgium fall away at the end. Also had a few small bets on the top 10 which did not come off and took Turkey at 12 to 1 to win for 2 quid so lost out there.

UK got what they deserved. I do think Belgium actually had the best song, but I guess they could not get enough support.
Report basil333 May 29, 2010 11:39 PM BST
I was laying the field on the top 3 and top 4 as there was a huge margin - kept Germany, Azerbaijan and Armenia low and not too much against Turkey either.  Laid a lot against Azerbaijan during the voting - wasn't sure how that last vote would go (geography not good enough) or could have made a profit.  Fortunately the margin was huge so the loss isn't as much as I thought.  Backed 4 in the top 10 (Germany, Armenia, Denmark, Greece) - all came in so that has helped, and made a little on Germany in the outright.  I reckon I'm down just over £100.00 over all but it could have been a whole lot worse!
