hi again, please more help reqd, my 10 year old son is a pretty good sprinter but to be very good i have to improve him 2/3 yards, havent done any sprinting with him in last 6 months because hes got soccer, rugby etc, but now will compete over 100m and 200m this summer.my question is how do i get him faster, is it matter of technique, drills etc or actual hard sprinting say 10x100m eg.some say do the running at 80% effort but i cant see how he gets faster like this unless it makes him fitter and stronger therefore will automaticallt get faster. hope i make sense.whats the best training routine for 200s please. thanks all in advance

Make sure he runs up on his toes. Heel striking is a massive no-no in all running but sprinting even more so. Also, work on a good knee lift. Watch any good sprinter and they bring their knees up almost 90 degrees to their torso. And you should be pumping your arms backwards. Your elbows shouldn't be in front of your body as it's just wasted motion.

The most important thing though is to relax. It might sound weird but if you're trying to run as fast as possible then trying harder ain't gonna help it's going to hinder. You have to be totally relaxed and in control. Watch Michael Johnson doing a 200m or 400m, totally relaxed and zero tension.

creatine?

small controlled doses mind you..kid's only 10.

will help build the strength and power he needs for the extra yards.

The kid is 10. Don't do ANY specific sprinting training he is too young. Take to local athletics club and let him have fun!!

Bounding exercises up a grassed hill (small gradient) of about 30 - 50 yrds. Do reps of these. This is a sure fire way to develop his sprinting without too much stress.

Agree completely. A little bit of training on technique might not go amiss, but you don't want to be doing owt special on physique and fitness til 13 at the earliest. Imo, of course.

hi, just like to inform that my son has not been doing any athletic training sticking to school sport, rugbby and soccer over the last few months, never the less he had his 1st race of the year last night , the heats of a north wales cup which he won two years ago and was placed last year even though v older boys, the massive problem i have is that last night he struggled to get through, the lads he used to beat 4/5 yards have all closed the gap on him, and im pretty worried, not bad loser bbut evberyone else seems to have improved  with age, my lad is still on same times as 18 months ago and doesnt seem to improve at all.. im very worried coz i take it at the age of 11 he should have improved a second at least from the age of9. hope someone can help, and this makes sense to athletics coaches out there
