thats a pretty good set up between M1, Dream and Strikeforce. seems to suit a lot of quality fighters who dont want to get tied down by the UFC.

hope they keep it going because they're putting together some good fights.

Gotta see Mousassi v Henderson, that would be an awesome fight. Going one step further why not Fedor v Henderson!

Why would you want to see MMA become fragmented like boxing? If M1/Dream/Strikeforce have success then it just means we will see 1/2 the fights we want to see.

There was talk of Henderson vs Fedor,id love to see Fedor smash Hendo! We would really see what mousassi is made of if he fought Hendo!

That's why it's not good for the sport.

to be fair Strikeforce is live on CBS in the States which is pretty huge.
Report mehmet j mook December 10, 2009 6:35 PM GMT
It doesnt matter!!!!! Keeps ufc on its toes so they keep putting the big fights on so people watch them and want to fight for them over strikeforce. I like it,love watching mma and this means there are 2 organisations putting on 2 seperate events, which i will watch and enjoy.
Report Templeton Peck December 10, 2009 8:45 PM GMT
That is a valid point regarding CBS but having just one organisation makes it easier for fans (particularly those who aren't hardcore) to follow the sport. The one serious threat to the growth of MMA is if it becomes splintered like boxing.

You just need to look at how long it takes the best fighters to fight each other in boxing to see what having a plethora of organisations can do. When the UFC bought Pride it resulted in the best fighting the best and that's what I want to see.

If all these organisations were one then we'd see Fedor fight the UFC's best, we'd see Mousassi fight the best and so on.

I disagree, if there was just 1 organisation the ufc could get complacent knowing that fighters have to fight for them and people have to watch their product and therefore could get boring. If there are 2 or more organisations with decent fighters it leads to more debate and interest in who would win should the champions of different companies ever meet and inevitabley they always do meet eventuallt anyway, it adds more interst to it. With no competition the ufc could become stale.

Bad example i know but its like in wrestling when the wwe had wcw as competition, it kept the wwe on its toes as the best wrestling organisation. When they took over wcw they had no competition and the product went downhill and became stale

How is it a bad example, it's a perfect example.
Report Templeton Peck December 11, 2009 7:28 AM GMT
No, it's a bad example. It's like saying that without Coronation Street EastEnders would become complacent...

This is a sport, WWE is not.

I don't think the UFC would become complacent and stale as it always has the incentive of making money. If they didn't put on the best fights then it's customers would stop paying the $45 ppv, would stop paying the $100s for a ticket, then sponsors would pull out, they wouldn't get a network deal, etc.

The closest example is boxing. I notice on the boxing forum that Khan (or his promoter) is thinking of giving up his title so he doesn't have to face a dangerous opponent. If boxing was run in a UFC style (one governing body/promotional company with no serious competition) then the best would be forced to face the best.

The threat of a competitor is no bad thing but a full blown one is. The threat of a competitor would ensure there's zero chance of complacency (not that I think they would become complacent as reasoned above) without diluting the UFC's fighter roster.

I'm disappointed the UFC have allowed Strikeforce to sign Bobby Lashley. Like it or not, having ex-WWE stars is a major pull factor. Just look at the Lesnar effect.

With a strong competitor to the UFC then all we get is the talking about who would win if fighter x fought fighter y. A sort of MMA Top Trumps. Personally, I'd rather see them fight than have a chinwag about who would win...
Report stalingrad December 11, 2009 1:25 PM GMT
But the fact that there is a competitor keeps the interest alive and means that the ufc have to constantly up their game to stay the number 1 mma company. If the ufc just got to handpick the cream of all the fighters they would fight immediately and that would be it, people would lose interest this way. When they make a big signing, its a big thing and it generates more interest. Fight sports are all about hype and the anticipation of big matches being made and it would be amazing at first if the ufc took fedor, mousousi, shields etc and threw them in against brock, silva, gsp but then what? No more anticipation, no more hype and people slowly lose interest. Now if every now and again the ufc signs one of them its a big thing and generates more excitement. A good competitor allows for more interest and forces the ufc to up their game. Plus as an mma fan if two good companies are putting on good shows it means more ppv's for me to watch.

Competition breeds success!

I can't believe there are people saying MMA should follow boxing's (dis)organisational structure. Unbelievable.

The UFC would not get complacent as it has plenty of competitors as all sports (and entertainment products) compete with each other for the casual fan/viewer. For MMA/UFC the closest rivals would be boxing and WWE.

I also don't understand what 'complacency' would entail. I think the whole format is pretty much spot on, they're moving out to other countries (interesting to see Australia sold over 10,000 tickets on pre-sale) and have a number of interesting and varied tv programmes linked in (i.e. Unleased, MMA Live, TUF, etc). The only thing which can derail it is a lack of competitive fights at the top level. Splintering of organisations can achieve this.

You may want to talk about Brock v Fedor. I want to watch it.

It gives fighters different options too.

there was that kid on MMALIVE this week who turned down a big money deal with Strikeforce to fight in Bellator...just because Bellator offered him 3 fights in 3 months and the option to continue with his olympic wrestling.

also the new partneship between Dream, strikeforce and M1 wont weaken those companies....in the past you wouldve had fighters in Dream thinking...man I gotta quit this and head to the UFC....now they're staying put knowing they will get the chance to go live on CBS with Strikeforce...Shinya Aoki is the next one to head over. And you know what...theres talk Joe Daddy might walk away from the UFC just so he can fight him.

it should be a good kick of the rear for the UFC...dont let your good fighters go like that.

------------------------

just to go back to the start....I'm with Hendo on this one....He shouldve had that title shot vs Silva.
Report mehmet j mook December 11, 2009 7:07 PM GMT
Joe daddy wouldnt be missed, proved he isnt good enough for the top guys already.

I dont see why Hendo should get his title shot before people like Nate.
Report ELG December 11, 2009 7:14 PM GMT
for that matter...why is Vitor getting it ahead of Nate.....

I think what Hendo was thinking was - if Bisping had beaten him he wouldve got the title shot so why not me.
Report mehmet j mook December 11, 2009 7:16 PM GMT
cos Hendo fought him and got beat not so long ago.
Report mehmet j mook December 11, 2009 7:17 PM GMT
i agree Vitor shouldnt have his shot before Nate, but its a fight people want to see and people think he has a chance of beating silva, hendo didnt.
