Patriots and Chiefs are more or less 3/1 jt favs to win the AFC but more or less 7/2 and 15/2 respectively outright, so gone with the Chiefs as my opening gambit

Morning guys.
49ers loss cost me in region of 5k.
So you may view this as biased, there loss in my view almost entirely lies at the door of the coach, for someone who was in this position before and single handedly threw a previous superbowl, not to learn any lessons from that was utterly unbelievable in my opinion.
All they had to do was continue doing what they have repeatedly shown they are very good at,running the ball,to go away from that was a disgrace.
The game should end when Mahomes throws his 2nd pick. The mismanagement that followed was beyond belief.
The only other player as culpable was QB,he came up massively short in the biggest moment, the missed long pass to Sanders wasnt even that tricky, that wins the game also. But he shouldn't even have been reqd to throw the ****g ball, hand it off tine after time after time.

Truly shocking loss in the biggest spot of them all,Lynch looked dismayed at what they were doing. Bet his father was too.
What an idiot, arrogance at its worst.
Report Kelly February 3, 2020 12:46 PM GMT
Never bet on American football myself  , no interest .  However last night I did bet on 3 markets on the Super Bowl , won on all 3 , so might have to consider getting more involved .  The beauty about betting on AF is the stops .  Its a stop go activity , so there is time to adjust on market response , unlike golf which is continuous and dynamic except overnight .

Not knowing the rules intimately is a big disadvantage , as against that patterns are fairly easy to interpret .

The ball hopped friendly for the Chiefs last night , scoring 3 touchdowns in last quarter fairly unusual in a final I suspect .

Chiefs would not be 1/3 in a rerun , as final score might suggest .  Mahomes touched 4/1 I think in MVP market .

As in rugby , interceptions are a key element if you are betting in running .
Report Kriskin February 3, 2020 1:05 PM GMT
As stated above the 49ers beat themselves.  Between Shanahan & Jimmy G that was their downfall. If I'm the owner of the 49ers serious questions need to be asked with my coach and QB.  The Chiefs could not believe their luck in that final 7 mins.
Report Wesdag February 3, 2020 1:33 PM GMT
Yes, the way the 49ers all went over for a group photo after (I think) the 2nd interception was ridiculous to put it mildly. They lost focus at that point imo.

A great game, well worth staying up for after last year's no show.
Report GRANTCKING February 3, 2020 4:12 PM GMT

Kelly,

..its a fabulous sport and like all sports enjoyment generally increases the more you understand.  For example I never had any interest in cricket but over last 15-20 years have grown to love the sport. Still learning.

In terms of gambling I like long-running sports with ebbs and flows. NFL, Cricket, Golf Tennis.  (Soccer doesn't so it - though I'm profitable on it on the 2.5 / 3.5 under/over goals.....with very small amounts, but its a chore watching it, but only do it to pick up £ 100-200 a month to keep the books goodCool).

For me the pattern is the same - small amounts trading with momentum, levelling out and then placing half potential profit on the outsider. These swings happen so frequently in these sports (different types of ways).  But like all sports, you have to careful with NFL (speaking from experienceSad). 49ers were dominant for a lot of last night, but the ability for quick strikes, interceptions makes the game more volatile than it appears. I might have overdid it last night traded a position of  + £550 odd on 49 ers  but - £730 odd on Chiefs when 49ers on top, levelled out quite quickly to only £ 60 profit either way, but c'est la vie. Was tempted to leave it but experience taught me better.
Report Kelly February 4, 2020 1:28 PM GMT
Only comment I would make about American football is that it is a bit limited in relation to what position you would want to play if you were a kid . Only real "footballer" I see is the quarter back , and he is not allowed ( I presume) to kick the ball , but every child grows up wanting to be that quarter back , and there are only 2 ( presumably) in each squad .

Being part of the "forwards" ( rugby term ) is to be largely anonymous , just a number on a shirt  . Running back possibly another "feature" player ( I still remember John Riggins when we first were exposed to the game with substantial coverage) .  Wide receivers also have a chance to be MVP , but essentially it is always about the quarter backs .

Overall calling it "football" is a bit of a misnomer , there must be a more accurate description of it . Maybe American rugby would be a better term .

Still think no game in the world measures up to hurling , skill and commitment wise .  Unfortunately it is confined to Ireland , and only about 8 of our 32 counties play at the top level . And nobody pays more than 120 dollars for a "super bowl " ticket , the All Ireland final , traditionally on the first Sunday in September , Croke Park , Dublin, 82,000 plus attendance .  None of your 2500 dollars average price for a ticket , who pays that for a game of "football" ?

Can see betting opportunities in the game though , and with increasing difficulty in betting on running in some of our more traditional sports might be worth a closer look . Pre event betting on most sports nowadays offers very limited opportunities , the bookies and the exchanges are all essentially the same prices after taking into account margins and commission , only opportunity exists in running , but fast picture scalpers abound , and I only bet in running where there are "breaks" in play .

Great match though , not sure it would pan out the same result again .
Report tobermory February 5, 2020 12:36 AM GMT
There is skill in all positions.

American Football and Rugby are both versions of football, just as Association Football is.

The original FA did not imagine that had 'invented football'. They just decided to play a particular version of the rules. They did not dispute that rugby was football by different laws. And they wouldn't dispute that the NFL plays football.
Report Kelly February 5, 2020 4:51 AM GMT
Acknowledge that there is skill in all positions . But I suspect that the MVP in most games is a quarter back , as they have the most influence on the outcome of the game , as on Sunday .

But the terms offense and defense ( with separate teams ) indicates that offense are only there to attack , and defense to defend .  So they troop off in sequence . In most games every person has the opportunity to score , to defend and attack . That someone comes on the field to kick the ball specifically emphasizes that . All specialists essentially , which to me is very limiting .

Would be interested to see if the game that Jim Thorpe and co played on grass a century or more ago resembled the current game .
