Ok the headline is a bit hyperbole but +8 is absolute enormous for a team of the quality of the New Orleans Saints, and they are a must bet receiving more than a touchdown of a start.
I'm convinced this will be a close game.
I was very confident about the Saints keeping it tight the last time they ventured to Seattle (dec 3rd) and ended up with egg on my face after a 34-7 drubbing. But I still maintain the reasons for thinking it would be close on Dec 3rd stand today (maybe even more so).
If I could quick a QB/head coach combo to learn and make adjustments and come back better and stronger and wiser and tougher, it would be Drew Brees and Sean Peyton. Oh yes. Much more than Brady and BB. I saw an interview with Richard Sherman and he said that Brees was the best QB he has ever seen for 'working it out' and 'picking apart a defense after studying pictures on the sidelines'.
The Saints have been to Seattle twice in recent times in massive games. Once already this season when the NFC number one ranking was up for grabs and also back in 2010 as Super Bowl champions and losing a wild card game to the 7-9 Seahawks. The Saints were 10pt favs that day!
I'm utterly convinced that Peyton and Brees will have a game plan. I think we saw glimpses of it last week in Philly when the Saints ran the ball much more than normal. Peyton has always been a throw first coach. But he has a strong running game and he knows he has to be more balanced.
If you look at the Saints' offense it is, if not the best in the NFL, comparable with anyone in the league. Drew Brees, Darren Sproules, Pierre Thomas (questionable but could be back this week), Mark Ingram, the beast that is Khiry Robinson (feed the beast), Marcus Colston, Jimmy Graham (best tight end in the league bar none), Lance Moore, Kenny Stills.....serious, serious weapons. Also the Saints' offensive line has been playing much better of late and protected Brees well in Philly last week.
Now let's go back to the game on Dec 3rd. I think it's impossible for the Seahawks to play any better than they did. I also think it's hard for the Saints to play any worse than they did. Listening to Brees and peyton directly after the game and they knew they didn't play well and made basic errors. They knew this. They got behind very early in the game and were chasing it from the word go. Rob Ryan kept dialing up blitzes and Wilson burned him all night long. But even at 17-7 down just before half time, the Saints had some momentum and burned all their times outs to stop the clock and get the ball back and they had the Hawks in a 3rd and very long situation - but another crazy Rob Ryan play call and the Hawks converted. And that as they say was that.
But what i like is people learning from their mistakes. The following week the Saints tore the Carolina Panthers a new one in the Superdome.
Keep remembering the spread is +8.
Last week the Saints won their first ever play off game on the road with a narrow win in Philly. Many things impressed me about that win. The winning drive killed the game stone dead. Gave Philly no chance of coming back. The Saints and Brees ran the clock down from almost five minutes out. Also how well the kept Shady McCoy in check. McCoy has been the best running back in the league all season but the Saints played him well. I thought someone had kidnapped Rob Ryan as the Saints only blitzed (if they can even call it that) once all night - he brought an extra rusher!!! That discipline kept McCoy in check and baited Nick Foles to beat them through the air. He almost did it but not quite. And I can see Ryan doing the same again. Stop Lynch and keep Russell Wilson in the pocket and make him beat you. he might well do it but force him to do it. do not let Lynch beat you. No crazy blitzes.
The Saints' running game is actually very good and they have excellent options open to them. I think the Seahawks will concentrate on stopping the run (they are 7th against the run this season so not the best) and try and make Brees beat them. The problem is he can. He is very good. When the Saints' running game kicked into gear last week Brees played much better. it opened up so many throwing lanes for him.
In recent years the Saints have lost narrow play off games on the road in Seattle and San Francisco. People point out that they are no good on the road. In both those losses the Saints scored 30+ points.
This season the Saints (and this is without argument) should have won in New england and carolina. On both occasions they were leading until undone by last gasp drives. Heartbreaking stuff.
People on this forum rant and rave about the Carolina Panthers. But on the two occasions they have played this season the Saints have looked the better team. They have picked apart their defense and have stopped Cam Newton. No one can argue that on their two meetings this season that the Panthers are better than the Saints. They are not. The evidence is there. Now if the Panthers contest the NFC Championship game in Seattle the spread will probably be 3.5 in  Carolina's favour. The Saints are getting 8!!!! Massive.
This is going to be close. The Saints have absolutely nothing to lose. The pressure is all on the Seahawks. Sean Peyton and Drew brees are playing with the house's money and that makes them a very very dangerous animal. They have one of the most dynamics offenses in the league, their defense (although banged up) is ranked 4th in the league so they are no slouches either and they won their first road play off game last week and are brimming with confidence. Plus they should have won in New England and Carolina this season.
All in all the saints are a cracking bet in receipt of 8.

I would think that Seattle would be able to stuff the run and Brees will struggle to throw it against this secondary in the torrential rain.
Report therhino January 11, 2014 11:28 AM GMT
New Orleans go on holidays after this. Not sure Seattle will win the SB, but New Orleans at home I think they'll handle.
Report Swardean January 11, 2014 11:48 AM GMT
Obviously bad conditions may stunt the seattle offence as well.   I dont really care about the score, as long as seahawks can find a way to win

Swardean - New orleans played better than Carolina during the torrential rain in Charlotte a few weeks back

Good write up Clay. I think despite all that the Saints may well get their arse handed to them on a plate again. Confidence is very high especially with Harvin being back.
The high wind and rain could  play havoc  for both sides. I wouldnt ant to be relying on a passing game thats for sure.

I`ll give the opening post a miss as I want to watch the Super Bowl. Would be quicker reading the Bible.

I'd say well done to Clay.....someones reasoned opinion is good to read no matter whether he's right or wrong.

The Seahwaks shutdown all NO's weapons last time, and in brutal winds and rain tonight it will be the same story. You might get your +8 up, but it could be squeaky bum.

Horrible weather. Strong gusting wind and absolutely  pouring buckets!
Report ClayDavis January 11, 2014 6:23 PM GMT
Roger De Bris - they didn't really. The Saints played really poorly. But if u watch the Saints' touchdown again from the last game, they waltzed down the field quite easily, ending with Jimmy Graham out-jumping their secondary for a touchdown. I still believe, again I'm prepared to be proved wrong, that the Saints O is not a great match for the Seattle D.
Seattle's secondary couldn't handle TY Hilton earlier in the season where he burned them time and time again. The Saints have speed and strength to hurt Seattle
Report victor meldrew doesnt believe January 11, 2014 6:28 PM GMT
just cannot see this being a drubbing... close game that's for sure... and i like the saints to do it... more match freshness after playing last week
Report tommo0001 January 11, 2014 7:17 PM GMT
the rain is a complete disaster for the saints and manna from heaven for seattle, marshawn lynch will be beating his cage doors to get out, seattle to get it in the ground and batter the saints defensive line,id`e be tempted to unders on this one

Hope you're right Clay, I can't have anyone giving the Saints 9.5 at evs, let alone a hype team like the Seahawks.

hawks look the real deal now, the saints look a superbowl team in the next few years but not yet. the hawk D can handle brees and co, plus the 12th man takes serious effect in seattle, this is only going one way!!!!!

Yeah.  Utterly fantastic write up Clay.  I'll save my new bud Might Mac the trouble.  After you're through with the bible, don't bother with this tripe.

My favourite Clay quote from above:

Still standing - you are a real nasty piece of work. Even tried after timing and you have ended up with egg on your face. You are making a fool of yourself and people on the forum can see you for what you are. I will not respond to you again.

For everyone else. This is one that got away for the Saints. The Saints were excellent on defense. The fumble for a touchdown and the two missed field goals killed them in the end. But they will kicking themselves. They had the Seahawks tonight, they had them
Report northanlite January 12, 2014 12:54 AM GMT
clay you sound as though you don't think missed field goals & fumbles are the saints own fault. these mistakes are their mistakes not some unfortunate uncontrollable event.
if anything went against the saints that they could not control it was the weather

northanlite - I'm blaming the Saints. I'm saying they missed a golden opportunity and the fumble and two missed field goals bit them.

lufc86 - The Seahawks were running out the clock when Lynch scored his touchdown so they cancelled each other out
Report northanlite January 12, 2014 1:05 AM GMT
as it turned out 2 wasted time outs (3 if you count the challenge although that was probably worth a punt) were very costly too.
Report themightymac January 12, 2014 1:05 AM GMT
Come on be serious, no one can blame the kicker for missing 2 long fg`s in terrible conditions (30mph winds and bluster rain)

You'll have to enlighten me on the aftertiming there genius.  I can't comment on your inane dribble until I see it.  You of course didn't notice that I said nothing about your pick of NO +8, I assume that is what you are eluding to.  Your comprehensive skills suck.

This season the Saints (and this is without argument) should have won in New england and carolina. On both occasions they were leading until undone by last gasp drives.

I guess I can't argue because ClayDavis said so.  Tom Brady leads his team down the field for the game winning drive, AGAIN.  But, I can't argue.

Your write ups made more sense when you just stole them from websites and cut and pasted them here.  Can we go back to those please.

As for your picks, next year I'll get a monkey and have him fling poo at some cardboard with some team names on it.  The poo flinger will pick 6 games a week for 17 weeks.  Out of 102 games, he'll get between 47 and 55 games right vs the handicap, with no long winded mistake ridden write up.  How many will you get Clay ?  My little poo flinging monkey will beat you.
