They are the best team out there - they are getting everyone healthy and they are hitting form at the right time. They are peaking as the Hawks are dipping. With Von Miller missing for Denver and The gronk missing for the Pats, I can't see the AFC providing the winner.
The 49ers are going to have to do it the hard way but going through Carolina, without Stevie Smith, will not be as tough as it could've been and then it's probably Seattle (not convinced the Hawks will be in the NFC championship game).
An offense with Gore, Davis, Grabtree, Manningham and Bouldin will be tough for anyone to handle.
The ravens and the Giants have done it the hard way in recent years so it can be done.
9-1 for the best team out there who are peaking at the right time is absolutely massive. A must bet.

I am with you on this Clay. I fancied the Packers until Rogers got injured and to be fair their defence was getting worse even before he got injured as well. I just think Denver will come unstuck against a better defence, I think the Pats have too many injuries to actually win it. New Orleans aren't improving, the Seahawks have cruised through the season but this is the business end now when it really matters. They finally lost at home under Russell Wilson so people know they can actually be beaten at home regardless of all that noise. I just think the Panthers will go close but just come up short and agree that the 49ers are hitting form and getting everyone fit at the right time. 9/1 looks a fair price even allowing for their schedule. I think the winner will come from whoever wins out of the Seahawks and the 49ers and my money is on CK to get the job done.
Report Only-the-Brave December 24, 2013 1:57 AM GMT
definitely see the logic.  That Seattle D is ridiculous though.  Safest bet is Denver as they look nailed on to reach the superbowl - don't see anyone in the AFC beating them.  Seattle/SF defo could, but by that time you can lay off.  Too many weapons, and I feel that they still haven't shown their full hand yet.

What prices would you expect 49ers to be in each of their 4 must win play-off games?  What price the acca?

Is 9/1 really good value?
Report Swagger December 24, 2013 1:31 PM GMT
It obviously all depends on who they play Swardean, it's not set in stone that any team will beat another so they may not have to face both the Seahawks and the Broncos or the Patriots to win the SB although on paper it would appear extremely likely. I suppose i'm just being lazy and although the 49ers lost very close games to both the Panthers and the Saints during the season I think they would take care of them now, the Eagles don't have a great defence, the Packers and Cowboys are banged up and the Bears have lost the plot so the first game shouldn't be too difficult then the fun really begins.

Little bit concerned last night at times the 49ers looked devoid of ideas offensively but perhaps Falcons are a tough match up for them and the Mike Nolan factor. Other side of the coin is that they have won 5 straight, and I just feel the offence still hasn't clicked this season so they are arguably ready to explode in the play offs.

Equally I think at 5/2, the Seahawks are terrible value, not because I think they can't win it but because I think they will surely trade at a bigger price in running even if they do go onto win the SB.

It does depend on the schedule as if the Patriots beat the Broncos and the 49ers met them in the SB then the 9/1 would look even better as surely the 49ers would be favourites in such a match up.

The Seahawks still have the Rams to beat first as well
Report stroodle December 24, 2013 1:33 PM GMT
Why would you think 49ers are a good thing for superbowl, when they could have easily lost the match against Atlanta last night, only for a good bit of luck in the last few minutes. Thought Atalanta were in terrible form going into this match? 49ers last match at Candlestick and struggled to put away a team which many thought were going to get a trouncing, and at the finish were unlucky not to win last night.
Report Swagger December 24, 2013 2:31 PM GMT
I wouldn't write off a team after one performance. The Seahawks scraped past The Buccs at home who i think had lost every game leading up to it but obviously the Seahawks have a quality team and a very good chance of winning the SB. Also, the Falcons would have been hacked off that they got beaten so late by the 49ers in the playoffs last season so i'm sure would have been well up for it last night. I did also elude to my concern about the 49ers on offence at times last night but with guys like Crabtree recently coming back the offence is probably just getting properly drilled for the play offs.
Report HARRY22 December 28, 2013 4:46 PM GMT
Agree with brave I am not sure if any team in the afc is  capable of beating denver in denver, not sure why I think this as this season has produced some crazy 4th quarter wins, I guess  I should have said 'I have no idea which team can do the job'  can't look past seattle and 49ers, saints need home advantage for me, panthers will probably hit a wall and not sure if cam is at full strength, packers could sneak in but this team has been done yet again by lots of injuries in key positions, they will be in great shape next season.

49ers or seattle.....what worries me is the home advantage, the last 4 meetings have had the same pattern, niners have won both home games JUST and both in similar fashion, seattle have completely smashed the niners in seattle and you have to favour seattle yet again, they just seem to know how to play kaep.
Report Swagger December 28, 2013 6:11 PM GMT
I quite like the Steelers for next season. Much has been made of their old defence which is a fair criticism, but they will surely bring in some new blood for next season. Big Ben has been playing very well in recent weeks seems to have taken a while for him and the young offence to get on the same page. Brown, Bell and Sanders are quality and will only improve next season. They have lost a lot of tight matches this season which could have gone their way, the Panthers lost loads of tight encounters last season and although they obviously have a strong defence this season, they have managed to turn of lot of narrow losses into narrow victories.

Agree with your point about the Seahawks hammering the 49ers in the two recent home matches. I just think that this time they have just got turned over by the Cardinals at home and they will have all the pressure as they will be expected to simply repeat the previous wins whereas the 49ers can have a real go and just pure gut feeling but I think they will edge it.

Gutted the Romo is out tomorrow, whatever people think of the guy he deserved to play tomorrow and it really takes the gloss of what was primed to be an absolute belter
Report The real Moaner December 29, 2013 1:58 PM GMT
49ers value wise look utterly atrocious.

If results go according to plan, they will have to win at Seattle, Carolina and Philly just to reach the Superbowl. I wouldn't make them favourites in any of those matches - I'd make them closer to 9/1 to win the NFC than to win the Superbowl.

Of course, if they somehow manage to secure the NFC West, 9/1 becomes good value but that looks a very long shot.

I think if this was just a normal regular season match-up then it would be. Knowing the way Jim Harbaugh thinks though, an early lead for the Seahawks in Seattle (where they should beat the Rams) will make this a pretty much a dead rubber for the Niners and as such I can't see him wishing to risk injury to any front-line players. I hope I am wrong as this has the potential to be a decent match-up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on SF since pre-season and they are my biggest winner by far if they go the whole way. I just cannot see them as favs against the Panthers though.
Report sideshowbob December 31, 2013 3:16 AM GMT
the packers are dreadful, but with rodgers they have a chance at home. no way i would back the 49ers at 9/1.

every year since betting began the teams with a week off get backed in after the wildcard games. the four teams not playing arent backed simply cos they arent playing. all the other teams are backed and are shorter than they should be. the 49ers will be about 8/1 if they beat the packers. youre basically backing them at about 1/10 to beat green bay.

quite often teams are a bigger price to win the superbowl even after they win the wildcard game. next week when especially seattle and denver are playing, those teams will get backed in and all the wildcard winners will drift. happens every year.
Report ClayDavis December 31, 2013 10:31 PM GMT
I reckon the 49ers should have won the last two Super Bowls. Two years ago they were desperately unlucky against the Giants in the NFC Championship game. Remember the punt return balls up? Cost them big time. And I have no doubt they would have beaten the Pats in the final. Then last year they were the best team. But for some unknown reason they had a shocking 1st half in the Super Bowl that cost them. Even then, they were unlucky not to come back and win it in the end. Ravens were hanging on for dear life.
Now they have Bouldin in their line up. Boy are the Ravens missing him. So in my mind, the 49ers are better, on paper, than they were last year.

The 49rs will be found out against Cam Newton and the awesome Panthers defence.
Report db1974 January 6, 2014 12:17 PM GMT
49ers "last-second" win last night was following a fantastic drive with fantastic clock management. I don't see what was lucky about it TBH. It was text-book stuff which kept Aaron Rodgers off the field and ensured that the Packers would have no last-minute drive for glory.

I agree things will be tough in Carolina but it's not like the Packers played badly last night.

The Panthers also found it difficult to run against the 49ers earlier in the season so hopefully we get another great game with a close finish.

Carolina's top wide receiver hasn't played since spraining his PCL in Week 16, but told The Charlotte Observer on Monday that he plans to play in Sunday's NFC divisional playoff showdown with the San Francisco 49ers.

Smith initially told the newspaper there was a 60 percent chance he'd suit up, but the pass-catcher said that was more about "a matter of confidence in the knee." On target to resume practicing Wednesday, Smith said he's already done some running and cutting.

I'm coming over to thinking the 49ers are going to win the Superbowl this year too. They seem to have a big game feel to them. The Packers played well last night but the 49ers were clinical. They have serious weapons in Crabtree and Bouldon and Gore might not have the electric burst of pace of old but he's still going to pick you up a hell of a lot of yards. Defence also looks solid and with that you have a great team for playoff football.

Panthers might have beat the 49ers fair and square but it was a 1point game. 10points against the 49ers won't get the job done on sunday that I'm sure. Plus it's Cam Newton's first playoff game and how will he cope with the pressure? He could up his game but the pressure could also get to him like it did Andy Dalton yesterday. I really think the 49ers are going to the NFC Championship final.
Report ClayDavis January 7, 2014 11:21 AM GMT
It was 10-9 to Carolina in Candlestick - the Panthers were in their best form of the season (they followed up with a win over the Pats in their next game) while the 49ers were missing Crabtree and (pretty certain) Aldon Smith while Vernon Davis was out very early in the game leaving the Niners with basically Bouldin as their threat for the remaining of the game. Plus I think Kaep was 11 from 22 in the game. Carolina are going to have to play a lot better on Sunday in order to prevail
Report Swagger January 7, 2014 11:23 AM GMT
Kaepernick does have this air of confidence and swagger, he was laughing and joking having blown a timeout right at the start of the second half which at the time looked brainless but he didn't seem to care thinking they would get the job done regardless and he does seem ultra cool under pressure. He threw a bad pass which should have been picked in the final drive then just put it to the back of his mind and got the 49ers up to field goal range to win the game. I was impressed by his temperament especially given he was up against Rogers. People have questioned Kaepernick this season but I felt he answered a few critics. Lets see how Wilson and Newton get on this weekend.
Report Swagger January 7, 2014 11:27 AM GMT
I would be impressed with the Panthers can beat the 49ers this weekend - for me I think the 49ers will get the job done. I feel the game of the week will be the Saints vs Seahawks, I can see this being a lot closer than most envisage. All the pressure is on the Seahawks here, the Saints can play loose with nobody giving them a chance. Obviously the Seahawks hammered them during the season but this is the business end of the season where Drew Brees comes alive
Report Wallflower January 7, 2014 11:58 AM GMT
.... Kaep's running won it for 49ers - if they are relying on it against Panthers and/or Seahawks (if)....then they will be in trouble as they'll be looking for bits of him in the stadium by half-time.

.....However, they know that as well as any of us, so will game-plan accordingly. Intriguing to say the least.Happy
Report Swardean January 7, 2014 12:21 PM GMT
I have stated before on why I feel the panthers match up well to 49ers.   Wallflower is right, they play the read option better than any other team and I dont expect Kaep to do too much running.   I feel another tight game and if the line continues to move to 49ers, then Panthers +3 would be the play for me.
Report Swardean January 7, 2014 12:22 PM GMT
However, should 49ers prevail and Saints upset Seattle, the 49ers would have home advantage for the NFC championship game and could look destined for NY City.
Report Swagger January 7, 2014 12:30 PM GMT
Surely it's a trade off though in that it's hard to completely shut down both the passing and rushing game against a duel purpose QB. The Packers seemed more concerned in preventing the 49ers from getting big plays which gave more space for Kaep to run. With Crabtree and Vernon Davis back in the fold, if the focus is on preventing Kaep from running then surely he will have more opportunity to throw to his weapons and this time he has more than just Boldon - so it could come down to how well he actually throws. I thought the 49ers looked pretty mean defensively against the Packers and only the magic of Rogers got them close. Maybe I am underestimating the Panthers - either way it should be a great game for the purists!
Report Swagger January 7, 2014 12:46 PM GMT
My worry about the 49ers remains that they haven't been clinical enough this season in that even against the Packers they had two chances early doors to get touchdowns to really put them under the pump but couldn't punch them in the redzone. They obviously have to start converting those into touchdowns if they are to win the Superbowl
Report Roger De Bris January 7, 2014 3:07 PM GMT
I was very surprised how hard GB found it to hit big pass plays on the SF dbs, after what Neil Reynolds was saying pre-game that the 49ers secondary was missing Carlos Rogers, and had to start Eric Wright and get Cox back from Seattle. Maybe the cold weather saved them. I still have this vision of Jacoby Jones torching them for the TD in the Super Bowl, and Anquan Boldin beating them up.
Report Swardean January 8, 2014 11:25 AM GMT
Swagger, with Kaep, you want to keep him from running, if you do that then IMO he is a average pocket passer, who will struggle against a decent secondary.

All these opinions make it great and I cannot wait to find out how it unfolds this weekend.
Report ClayDavis January 8, 2014 12:28 PM GMT
Swardean - he is an average pocket passer. Therein lies the problem. But when he becomes a duel threat - along with Gore's running - it opens up plenty of passing lanes.
