On 08/06/10 at 7:05 PM ET time Stephen Strasburg makes his major league début at Nationals Park against the Pirates.
I thought it would be a pretty big deal so i decided to make a topic about it. Pretty early but whatever...
The game will be on ESPN America and MLB.TV so make sure you watch it!
I would think the Pirates would be good value because there has been so much hype about the young pitcher that Pittsburgh would have scouts at two or three of his last AAA outings and therefore know how to beat him. It depends on who is starting for the Pirates I suppose.
I would also like to bring attention to another phenom in the minor leagues by the name of Mike Stanton, a Marlin's prospect. He leads the minors in home runs and may also appear next week for his début.

Worth noting that Stanton is younger than Strasburg, Mike Leake, even slightly younger than Jason Heyward. Very rare for a hitter to be so powerful at his age.

By the way guys, i have secret information that Stephen Strasburg has broken both his arms. My uncle is a secret agent for the Pirates and he has been spying on the Nationals. You muast lay Washington.
Keep it a secret though!

Strasburg will face a cold Pirates offence tonight( I dont think it was every hot anyway) and the Nationals have been hitting recently so a victorious debut should be on the cards, although 1.5 is very short in my opionion...
The previous comment was a joke made at a 'baseball tipster' on the forum who has an 'uncle who works for the giants'...

Bit of a shaky start, struggled with his control and got away with McCutcheon's line drive. But that strike two breaking ball to Milledge was rather lovely.

Fair to say that Jeff Karstens was slightly over-matched in that at bat.
Last two innings have been very impressive. Yes, it's only against the Pirates but the movement on Strasburg's pitches is nasty. The running fastball and the breaking ball are especially good.

Allowing for the natural nerves it has been a great debut, real signs that he can do special things with a ball.
However, the running didnt look to hot
May continue quite deep in this one if he continues to pick batters off early

He kept throwing change ups in that 4th inning, including the pitch Delmon Young hit out. Wasn't as impressive, tiring maybe? The Nats commentators seem to think he will pitch six innings and then exit.

The Nats commentators have been sickeningly over the top so far. Was it the second inning when they said it was like watching Walter Johnson? I've obviously never seen Johnson play, but have seen the stats and the Sporting News voted him 4th on their list of 100 Greatest Baseball Players ever, which was regarded as a definitive list.
Get over it.

I will forgive this team all the fawning and OTT hyperbole, it must be really great for them (for once) to have something to look forward to. Hope they enjoy it.

The Nats colour bloke, Rob Dibble, is generally awful, but you're right Bottom_of_the_League, he's been particularly bad tonight. 1.01 landed on Dibble being the first commentator to mention the Hall of Fame.
That being said, hard not to be excited by Strasburg's talent.

Don't get me wrong, he looks good, very good, but let's not hint he could soon become one of the top five players ever during his first game please. Plenty of promising young players, in all sports, disappear off the radar quickly for one reason or another.
I've never liked this Nationals commentary team, the main guy sounds like a little kid in a sweet shop the whole time and the colour guy just talks nonsense throughout.

The schedule couldn't have fallen any better for Strasburg. By my reckoning his next three starts will be against Cleveland, the White Sox and Baltimore. Respectively their offenses sit 11th, 12th and 14th in OPS+ in the AL. It's quite hard to figure when he'll meet a decent hitting team, I suppose the Mets at the beginning of July just about qualify.

If he doesn't strike out Corey Patterson at least twice I'll eat my Johnny Gomes replica jersey.
On the subject of Baltimore - what's with Matt Wieters, orioles? The utter ineptitude of Messers Atkins, Izturis, Patterson and Montanez seems to have kept him out of the spotlight, but he's been rubbish.
