I feel sorry for charger fans. They were one draft pick away from getting Peyton Manning but got Ryan Leaf instead, the biggest bust in the history of the nfl draft. After that they offloaded Drew Brees in 2005, another head in hand moment.

i dont think the chargers problems are at quarterback though

JaMarcus Russel is seething that you consider Ryan Leaf a bigger bust than him

didnt the colts trade faulk to get 1st round pick for manning

In fairness, they could have been stuck with Eli but got Rivers instead - not a bad days work there

Imagine how they felt when Eli went on to win the superbowl and the game MVP. Rivers might never win anything, unlike a their former qb Drew Brees.
Report Umbo Mangoman February 10, 2010 11:35 PM GMT
yeah they got rivers and merriman for eli if I remember right.. not too bad :-)
Report molars February 11, 2010 12:17 AM GMT
^ ^ and Nate Kaeding :)
Report honestcl February 11, 2010 5:28 AM GMT
All Jet fans are glad SD got Kaeding. He's won us 2 play offs games.....that's as many as Joe Namath ever won for the Jets!!

Larry Fitzgerald was there when they took Rivers.

Imagine Brees to Fitzgerald....

Rivers is a fantastic QB. Really don't see the problem with regards to the position. The Chargers could have had Montana playing under centre and they still wouldn't have got to the Superbowl over the last few years.

And Manning wasn't the MVP of SB42, it should have gone to Strahan, or a collective award for the Giants D-line.

Technically it was Manning. They traded Manning to the Giants for Rivers and a couple of Draft picks which became Merriman and Kaeding.

But even so, Brees wasn't the Brees of today back then, and there's no telling whether he ever would have become the same player.

I think the Chargers are more than happy with the way that Draft went down.

Obiv none off us can see what could have happened but id be pretty sure that brees would not have won a sb ring if he was still at the chargers, rivers is not this teams problem. Surely no one really thinks rivers is the reason the chargers havent won a sb yet.

Have the chargers got any hope of picking up CJ Spiller in the draft? I think he could be an ideal fit for the Chargers now LT has gone/going.
Report DoggyLFC February 12, 2010 8:43 PM GMT
wanna, Spiller is basically a bigger version of Darren Sproles. And he'll be off the board by the Chargers pick.

They're better off looking at someone like Ryan Matthews or Jonathan Dwyer in Round 2. Or maybe Anthony Dixon in round 3.

They have bigger needs though - D-line and LB look very very weak.
Report wanna_b_pro February 12, 2010 8:51 PM GMT
Chargers should get back Jamal Williams next year, that should improve the D-Line. I think their biggest issue is at RB. I bet they wished they had kept Michael Turner!

Manning was the superbowl mvp???

This is rubbish, Brees was injured alot as a Charger and his contract was up, they would have to put alot of money on QB that was injured or pick Eli/Rivers + 2 picks. It was a no brainer

If you want to talk about a curse, its their coaches play calling, Schottenheimer against NE on a 4th down or Norv Turners onside kick. Other than that they have had bad luck on injuries in PO, with Gates,Rivers and LT after they beat Indy away and then had to go to NE.
