NFL - touchdown, to TRY and get in the endzone

Rugby - try, to TOUCH the ball DOWN

makes sense to me :D

Why is it called boxing when it's done in a ring, why is it called a ring when its square?

Originally, boxing simply took place on the streets or in warehouses and was illegal. The two participants stood in a circle of spectators that formed a circle around them, defining the area they would compete in. A rope was held by the crowd to further define....the ring.

:)

I'll leave the dogging to someone else.

Why do people call me Dave when my real name is Amanda?

Funny thread :-)

In answer to the first question, prior to 1889 the ball had to be touched down beyond the goal line.

Touchdowns used to only be worth 4 points, then 5 and then eventually 6.
