For me at least, the rule is never to lay at less than 10! I know this means you need to deposit a bit more into your account, but at least it enables you to lay things that really shouldn't happen. For example I have been laying the away side when Barcelona have been playing at home, and so I didn't lose out when they drew at home recently. If you had been backing them level stakes all season, and as they're usually trading at about 1.1, you would have lost 10 matches worth of profit in one week. It's a waste of time.

It's the same with the horses. Because I've been lucky recently and now have a reasonable total, I've been able to lay horses at 30 or higher, just trying to nick £4 or £5 per race. This can be very boring and you need a lot of discipline, but if you get lucky and avoid 20/1 winners, your total can increase quite fast.
