Ireland's Leona Maguire on Saturday defeated Spain's Ainhoa Olarra, 3 and 2, at Pyle and Kenfig to win the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship. Maguire, the top-ranked amteur in the world and two-time Annika Award winner, defeated Finald's Anna Backman earlier in the day to secure her place in the final.
The former Duke Blue Devil now has a place in the field for both the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open. Maguire won the Smyth Salver as the low amateur at the Women's British last year. She is also already qualified for year's fifth major, the Evian Championship, via the Annika Award. |

I presume she will turn professional soon.
A bit like Tiger in the 90s. Women's golf needs a white superstar. |

Please tell me she is from the Republic as I must confess I have never heard of her before?

Good news. I dislike this habit of claiming Northern Irish people as "Irish" as last time i checked it was part of the United Kingdom. The message seems to be lost on a few, not least RTE.

Surely RA is not saying that people from the north of Ireland are not Irish

I'm delighted to report that the man on Koepka's bag was from Royal Portrush and as Irish as the Healy-Rae's. Another "Irish" sports star added to the RTÉ firmament.

Amazing that Ireland has virtually no representation on the womens tours , given our contribution to the mens over the years . Suspect there is a meagre living in it compared to the mens operation .
