A well crafted, learned, lengthy piece in today's Guardian.  Well worth a read.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/dec/08/welcome-age-anger-brexit-trump

It introduced me to the word 'Ressentiment', which Wikipedia describes as;

a sense of hostility directed at that which one identifies as the cause of one's frustration, that is, an assignment of blame for one's frustration. The sense of weakness or inferiority and perhaps jealousy in the face of the "cause" generates a rejecting/justifying value system, or morality, which attacks or denies the perceived source of one's frustration. This value system is then used as a means of justifying one's own weaknesses by identifying the source of envy as objectively inferior, serving as a defense mechanism that prevents the resentful individual from addressing and overcoming their insecurities and flaws. The ego creates an enemy in order to insulate itself from culpability

You always think you know best, don't you.

Ozymandius did you even read it.
It wasn't well crafted and certainly not learned.

It was ironically hate filled.
It seemed like the author was trying to show how much he had read in his life.
It was absolutely dreadful,shapeless and meaningless.

Many people are trying to figure out why we are now living in such a dangerous age: a casual viewing of Sky Atlantic's documentary "The Act Of Killing" and recent memories of the catastrophic Arab Spring, Rwanda, The Balkans, Iraq etc. etc. shows that so-called civilisation is a mere loin cloth for our inherent barbarism.

The usual shooting of the messenger and  a series of platitudes and personal insults - the usual form of debate here - yet no counter opinion or alternative views/articles offered. The cess pit of alt-right websites don't lend themselves easily to reference points.

It seems to me the UK is lurching to some form of disaster - economic success is hardly the first measure of success - Trump is unwrapping the most unsavoury bunch of knobheads imaginable - and everyone wants the opportunity to kill, demean or annihilate those of different creed, colour or skin. As we gather here, there are probably tens of thousands of Aleppo citizens being literally butchered by Assad, that London-educated ophthalmologist and Russian stooge. Dangerous times indeed.

R.A Hole seems to be forgetting a certain Obama was in power when the Arab spring happened , and if I remember correctly he welcomed it, another Trump aphobic  appears it seems .

Am glad you enjoyed it, Borneo.

It was far from a great piece but there were a few interesting observations and references.  I thought some of the the chaps on here might appreciate a change from the Daily Express.

Now that you seem to have got the hang of opening links, here is an article from earlier in the year;

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/uk-migration-six-myths-about-immigration-debunked-as-latest-figures-show-fall-in-non-eu-arrivals-a6895341.html

It deals with a lot of oft mentioned topics on here such as;

* 'Immigrants are coming here for benefits'
* 'Immigrants are taking our jobs'
* 'Migration causes crime'
*  It puts a strain on public services, hospitals and schools'
* 'The refugee crisis is pushing immigration out of control'
* 'Migration is higher than ever before '

I read that one too.
I thought all the points made were wrong.

Its as if they are deliberately trying to distort what we are saying.
Few are against immigration but there is good immigration and bad immigration.

A country should decide who comes in.
You let in the ones who will benefit your country and reject the ones who won't.

Every country has a duty of care to its citizens so letting in people who want to kill you is not a good idea.

Royal Academy complains about personal insults and no arguments he then pens a piece littered with personal insults but with no argument.

His pieces are a pastiche of personal insults and sneering.
He thinks this makes him enlightened.

The normal insult used to be snake oil salesman its now Knobheads.

At least the points made were backed up with relevant statistics and pertinent facts....as distinct from bluster, bias, personal opinion, group think and mere anecodotal evidence.

Few are against immigration........I simply don't accept you believe that for a moment and it's certainly not true in today's rabid environment. And you really should reprimand Stanley for vulgar language.

Give Donald a chance...right?

Reluctant to let go his property business and retains control of his TV franchise and appoints a cabinet of multi-millionaires just like himself to solve the problems of climate and the rustbelt. Bush appointed warmongers who ran their own munitions and mercenary outfits.

Trump has said that on the basis of their wealth these appointments will be selfless and are akin to the calls for Michael O'Leary to run the country. Businessmen usually have one skill: making money and don't harbour altruistic visions for the poor and "ordinary" citizen. This is the biggest lie of all: pretending a ruthless vested interest will suddenly transform into something philanthropic. Businessmen make lousy politicians but if you already have views on white supremacy, women's rights and the Donald comes calling your day is made. So, yes...take your pick...Trump - snake oil salesman selling out already on his extravagant boasts and knobheads such as Pruitt (coalman), Pence (anti-everything liberal) and Bannon ($%£").

A Britain lead by Theresa May trying to keep pace with an unpredictable rabble rouser: Lawd knows where we'll end up.

The one relevant point they can't grasp is you don't have to treat them as some monolith that can't be broken down.
They don't get the difference between a doctor and some polygamous Imam with a scraw of children.

The most laughable of all is the Ponzi scheme excuse that we need them to pay our pensions
Report wildmanfromborneo December 9, 2016 5:24 PM GMT
I have long been critical of Trump,I consider him a boastful lout.

I agreed with him on issues,mainly immigration but also foreign policy.
I think he's right on Russia,the Cold War is over Russia should be an ally.

I'm also against pointless wars.
I never wanted to kill Muslims just don't want them invading the West.

Its amusing watching all those preaching diversity and equality trying to impose their ideas on different cultures presumably ones they deem but won't say are inferior.
