RIP Francis Flood.

Very sad to learn of the passing of Francis Flood, gentleman, equine genius, fount of knowledge and peerless planner of an old fashioned punt.
Former champion trainer and Gold Cup winning handler Francis Flood has sadly passed away at 86 years of age. RIP

I remember well francis horse Glencarrig lady winning one of the best gold cups ever run,  R.I.P

My da reckons flood was the greatest bumper pilot of all time.

I guess Glencaraig Lady was his best.

Who were his amateur jockey contemporaries ? i.e. Missed out '59, '63 & '64.

I don't know who won in the missing years, maybe Bunny Cox, Alan Lillingston, Cecil Ross

Francis Flood, RIP, was amateur champion outright five times 57, 60, 61, 62, 66. He shared it twice, with the great Bunny Cox (commonly regarded as the best of his generation) in 58, and with the talented but wayward Barry Brogan in 65. The other leading amateurs of that era were Cecil Ronaldson, (59 champion) Alan Lillingston of Winning Fair fame (champ in 63) and Bill McLernon who won the first of three titles in 64. Arthur Moore and Dermot Weld shared the 68 title and then Dermot won it twice before an era dominated by Ted Walsh, who won 11 titles, in two sequences broken by a couple of wins for Boots Madden. Kevin Prendergast was a very good amateur but never champion. Pat Hogan, a legend over the banks at Punchestown, and Phonsie O'Brien were outstanding riders in the 40s/50s.

Francis was a real gentleman and a great trainer; condolences to his family and friends.
