Like a lot of these wonder kids, once he lost his claim and had to go into battle on level terms got found out .Still a fine rider and will win many more top races if getting the ammo...

So he's a fine rider that will win many more races but somehow he's been found out..
This is awful gibberish to be reading .

i saw him ride a cracker last season @bangor the horse is with dan skelton now..pulled of a punt..i think if he gets the horse he can do the job!
Report workrider October 11, 2016 7:59 PM BST
Jimeen not that I'd expect you to understand , but just to clarify , a claiming rider if hes any good has a huge advantage over the majority of shall we say  ordinary jocks ,of which ther're many , hope you are able to follow so far , I know its hard for you , but stay with me a while longer. Trainers spot this and try to engage him or her to ride their horses . As he gets more experience his claim drops as he rides more winners .Funny not many trainers put up losing jockeys I wonder why ?. Hopefully you are getting the jist of this , as he progresses and the winners come flying and the journos are all over him ,breathtaking ride etc , all is rosy in the garden , then crash , the claiming is gone .Now he has become a fully fleged jockey and is expected to perform like one.Sadly in Johnnys case he fell short of the superstar status those self same journos had been forecasting .Found out in that sense ,hes no superstar but a fine jockey all the same .With sights lowered he's still very capable .Hope that helps . BWS, you still haven't explained how a horse who has won a G2 and 7races or 21% of his races is a PIG ...

Can people not make a judgement on technique, timing and if you wish guts and strength.

5lb or 3 or none, they either have it or they don't.

Wonks can a horse not go sour?  Looks like that to me.  He certainly would never carry a cent of my money in a race of any description!
Report workrider October 12, 2016 6:41 PM BST
Too discribe him as a pig though!,of course they can go sour , that doesn't make them pigs . A pig is one who NEVER puts it all in .
Report Bigwillystyle October 12, 2016 6:48 PM BST
Well if a horse is sour I would take that as they are also not putting it in, hence a pig!
Report workrider October 12, 2016 9:14 PM BST
Willie , once again you miss the point , this horse has WON 7 races so therefore PUTS it all in . PIGS don't win 7 races hths....
Report peckerdunne October 12, 2016 9:23 PM BST
He's a pig because he cant win but having had some success may go sour.
Report Bigwillystyle October 12, 2016 10:18 PM BST
Wonky how do you know he puts it all in? For all you know he could have won 14 races if he put it all in. I would confidently lay him everyday of the week. He will end up in selling hurdles over in England with John Joe before long
Report neill d October 13, 2016 11:58 AM BST
Handicap Hurdles in England would actually suit him way better as the jockeys start racing over there about a mile out! He'd probably find himself picking them up in spite of himself and winning the odd race over there, albeit probably at a lowish grade.
Report workrider October 13, 2016 6:54 PM BST
Wille horses who don't put it all in , don't win 7 races simple...

I've been watching Burke with a while and he looks a gonner to me.

Everything he rides is free, and are often ridden wide. Horses seem to run away with him and he seems to be unable to get even good jumpers to jump properly . Seems like a nice fella, something that is a rarity with these horrible runts, so it's sad to see his career in  freefall.
Hopefully he will turn a corner but the signs are ominous

Ireland produced some pilots a fair few years ago, the likes of Walsh, Geraghty, Carberry. Giants of the sport. Since then, Davy Russell has been the only one who you could put up there with the best of them. Why is that? I know people give out about Cooper but he's easily the best jumps jockey Ireland has produced in the last 10 years. Anyone think Danny Mullins is finally delivering on his potential?
Report mitch leary October 31, 2016 9:25 PM GMT
It's been a golden age alright. The jumps will soon go the way of the flat as regards jockeys. Poor standard worldwide. As good as Moore is there is the odd howler. I really rate Sean Bowen over jumps.
Report neill d October 31, 2016 9:56 PM GMT
David Mullins bears a pretty big resemblance to Ruby in terms of career trajectory and style of race riding.

Jack Kennedy is pretty phenomenal for his age as well. I remember him getting demoted for interference at Sligo or Ballinrobe one night during the summer, liked his bloody-mindedness. Have huge doubts over Cooper since he let Ruby up his inside at Leopardstown over Christmas in the 2m hurdle, common-denominator with all the top lads is bottle. Ruby bullied him.

Saw a highlight of Smullen riding a maiden winner for Stoute at Lingfield during the week. Could see he was a different class. Managed to settle the horse whilst simultaneously getting a position, seems like it has to be one or the other with a lot of jocks!

Freddie Tylicki has come on a tonne & had become the best rider in the North of England for me. Really nice guy as well going on interviews, so sad what happened him today; incident not his fault.
Report mincer11 October 31, 2016 11:13 PM GMT
Paul Carberry doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Ruby Walsh, or Barry Geraghty for that matter. A fool who wasted the talent he had, in fact he was the first Irish jockey of his generation to get a job in Britain, but he hadn't the brain to make the most of it .
There are some excellent jumps riders in Ireland at the moment. Apart from the greatest of all time Ruby, you have Geraghty Russell Townend for starters, but Kennedy and David Mullins are exceptional riders just starting to get really rolling. There are some others like Power Cooper Mark Walsh and Danny Mullins who don't do much wrong, and then you have a whole host of ones who can be either good or bad, but lack the consistency needed. The one type of jockey I don't like is the one who can ride to a reasonable standard but thinks they are so much better than they are. Over jumps Sean Flanagan fits that bill, but there's loads of them flat urchins who fall into that category, Foley Lordan Hayes McDonagh Lee and Carroll are just some that spring to mind
Report dj876 October 31, 2016 11:29 PM GMT
BJG has sold his soul (but every one of them would) and rides completely to orders now as AP did before him.

They will win the vast majority of the decent hcap pots this year but you couldn't back them in a beginners chase or a lot of maiden hurdles. You'd have wanted evens today that free expression was wanted let alone evens to win. The second last was jumped sideways as a momentum stopper imo, no financial interest in the race.

I hope we see them get dragged in a few times again this year not that it changes anything. There are plenty of operations at it but only one of this magnitude. As JP would say apparently you won't improve your position by opening your mouth (especially when you have something to hide)

Giggintown's policy in recent years is Cooper has first choice but then the yard decide the second string in the run of the mill racing. O'Leary's pick the deputy jockey themselves then for the festivals, has been Davy Russell a lot in the last year or so. David Mullins has surpassed Cooper already imo.

The top job in the game by a million miles is the retained rider for JP McManus...Barry Geraghty is an absolute certainty to be offered it and he will take it too....

wildmanfromborneo  • February 10, 2015 12:32 PM GMT
Barry Geraghty is 35 and enjoying riding good horses.
He won't want to move to England,he won't want to travel to all those country tracks.
He might not be offered the job first of all and secondly he might turn it down.
Should be odds against in that market.
Paulie you don't price no retained jockey,I think that's a huge possibility.

Brilliant appointment by J.P. McManus. At least McManus will now know when he wants one booted home, he has every chance with Geraghty on board.

AP says in the Times today that wearing the green and gold is the best job in racing. I'd say that being first jockey to Willie Mullins is better!
JP paid AP a £1 million retainer. Aiui, Ruby and Willie have only a gentleman's agreement. Working out prize-money percentages is left as an exercise for the reader.
