has hopefully fooked off back to Oz by now but she still feels the need to bombard us with her ignorent opinions about our constitution in the Irish media. There is a ridiculous article in today's Irish Times in which she criticises the Rose of Tralee festival and again pontificates to us about the laws of the country. Surely it is wrong to just march into any country for the first time and tell them how to vote without any knowledge of the existing laws in place. You would also wonder why someone would want to enter a competition that they have so little regard for. The IT columnists and other members of our left wing media are eating up her propaganda but had a foreign rose expressed an alternative opinion, they would not have received half the publicity and certainly not a column in the Irish Times.

This country now has a history of letting foreigners come in and tell us what to do i.e. the ECB, Amnesty International, EU Court of Human Rights etc. When are we going to stand up for ourselves and form our own opinions rather than be bullied and harried by people who know nothing about this country. Whether you agree with the particular points being made by these external influences, it is very worrying that we as a country feel the need to be so strongly influenced by international voices rather than stand on our own two feet and make up our own mind on various issues.

The stupid cow is criticizing something that she competed with others to be a part of?

Less said about the media the better

Lauded in The Guardian, writing for The Irish Times it wasn't a bad career move.

Only certain views are allowed, there is a liberal ascendency that is so authoritarian that if a Rose said anything that could be construed as Conservative she would have been torn apart.

Anyone remember Carrie Prejean ?

We do seem at times to push other areas so far up the agenda - gay marriage, repeal the 8th - and these then take on a life and momentum, liberal media driven mostly although the same camp see SF as the perennial whipping boys. It should be all about the basics - jobs and housing from where I am sitting from. Student housing this week seems to have taken over from the general housing problems for the state. It is not just students who are having difficulties in accessing good quality rental accommodation.

That said I can only really watch the RoT (an apt abbreviation) with the appropriate Waterford Whispers or Boards accompaniment. Unashamedly I have it up there as one of the TV high points of the year, along with the Eurovision Song Contest.

Em, was this Sydney Rose not right?

She probably arrived here and could not believe how backward we were on certain issues and felt she had to make a stand.  Fair dinkum.

I know its not the doctrine according to the Grinder obsessives in Maynooth...but surely ye don't look to them for moral guidance?  I mean that would be nuts!

Ozy, deems the R.C.of backwardness on certain issues , yet ANOTHER religion is worse, in fact it still remains in the 4th century , condones stoneing to death of Women , FGM ,  yet not a bad word passes his lips about same, weird or what....The Sydney rose would be better off highlighting the plight of these poor women ..

Perhaps she is saving that message for the Rose of Baghdad competition?

No point deflecting from our own defficiencies by taking solace in anothers.

They all have it Workrider, the more anti Catholic they are the softer the spot they have for the Religion of Peace.

Ozy,  Tomorrow as you turn your prayer mat towards Mecca ,please remember in your prayers a man standing on the 1st tee in Strandhill , looking into the Irish sea, his mind agonised with fear least his ball should not find the fairway .Having only played 3 games this year, rusty would be a understatement . Now facing 4 brutal days of golf ,hands shaking, beads of sweat running down his face,as he looks into the wilderness ,surely he is deserving of a word to your God...

Wildmanfromborneo , I'm always astounded how they deem this the Religion of peace, when all the evidence points to the total opposite . Its a testament to the power of Left wing P.C. None so blind as those that refuse to see...

Wonks, do you know that 'Islam' actually means Surrender?

God only knows why a thread talking about our backward stance on abortion has veered onto the familiar terrain of Islamophobia.  I guess that's the fate of most treads now, no wonder the punters have left in droves.

Amazing thing Ozy , your lovers of peace have the same opinion on abortion , yet never a peep out of ya about THEIR backwardness ? Catholics are fair game for you though it seems ...

Can we not talk about our own?

I would have thought our abortion laws were much more relevant subject that some man's deluded obsession that Sharia law is imminent in Birr.

Catholic teachings are forced upon us, formerly enshrined in our constitution, we are now supposedly a secular society but our freedom of choice fails to reflect this.  Tis a valid stand-alone topic for conversation and should not be deflected from by any of the Forums pet obsessions.

Lets get our own house in order.
Report workrider September 4, 2016 1:44 PM BST
So what you are really saying is ,its Catholic ,so therefore bad , we in the west consider ourselves progressive , yet we allow the murder of  children for cosmetic reasons , how come if we are so enlightened do thousends of our women end up pregnant year after year ,because our moral standards have dropped way below what would be acceptable in most non western Countries . This talk of been backward seems to suit those who refuse to take responsibility for their actions .
Report Ozymandius September 4, 2016 3:52 PM BST
Murder of children, my hole.

Next you will be telling me that a bl0w job is cannabalism.
Report newapproach September 4, 2016 8:43 PM BST
You have a massive habit ozy of selectively picking and choosing facts to suit your own agenda and ignoring what does not. For anyone who believes life begins @ conception, abortion is murder. I, along with many other people, believe this and that it is wrong to prematurely end the life of a baby inside the womb. The pro abortion people refer to the baby as a foetus to dehumanise the baby and thus, try and clear their conscious of committing a heinous crime.

Abortion is condemned by all major religions, not just Catholicism. Abortion is banned in this country based on morality, not religious grounds. The only major religion which does not strongly condemn abortion are your muslim friends.

You paint us out to be backward country just because abortion is against the law. Abortion have been taking place for thousands of years across the world. It was an advancement of basic human rights and dignity that banned abortion. They took place in very crude and undignified circumstances. The liberal media are promoting the falsehood that allowing abortion here is an advancement of women's human rights but it would be the opposite, it would bring them back to the dark ages.
Report Ozymandius September 4, 2016 8:56 PM BST
Choice is advancement.

Let each person make their own mind up about abortion. It's their body, their perrogative.  Making it legal does not make it obligatory. The state should not be the moral dictator on such an issue.  We have abortion here because of the hangover of Theocracy and because people for so long unquestionably took moral direction from the pulpit  Thankfully those days are over and taking away poeple's right to chose is an anachronism.
Report newapproach September 4, 2016 9:24 PM BST
The state as an obligation to it's people to protect them. That is why they make laws allowing certain acts and forbidding others. That is the essence of law and order. Some people think if something that they are entitled to anything that is legal and have no concept of the greater good. That is why the state is needed to act as moral guardian and promote general goo behaviour. People rightly get frustrated when the state does not abide by this themselves and get involved in wrong doing like corruption for example.
Report Ozymandius September 4, 2016 9:29 PM BST
Every state has that obligation...and most civillised first world countries correctly choose to give the person the right to make the choice about their own body.

I do not equate abortion with corruption but  know where you are trying to come from with the analogy.

What's the worst part about locking your keys in your car outside of an abortion clinic?

Going inside to ask for a coat hanger.
