Belgium are another myth, decent players but no world beaters, they have two great players (Hazard and De Bruyne) when they decide to show up apart from that the rest are nothing special, anyone with Lukaku and Fellaini in their starting 11 can't be serious contenders

i dont think we shamed ourselves at all. we were 5hit before the match and we are still 5hit after.
We have defenders from Villa, Sunderland, Everton and Burnley a midfield from Derby, Everton, Stoke and Norwich and we have a striker in the squad from Ipswich who hasnt scored in 21 games, a pensioner and the only decent forward is now injured. We are a country whose league is the equivalent of non league you're average irish football fan is more interested in a pi55 up in France than success on the pitch as Dunphy said.....the standards are higher in GAA, horse racing etc.... Ireland arent the only ones though. Money has coroded the majority of players passion in the game. Frequently now we see players earning 50k+ a week strolling around the pitch not giving a t*ss. Hunger plays a massive part in a players performance. Vardy has been sensational this year and its no coincidence he was plying his trade in non league a few years ago......he appreciates the chance hes been given. True,no leaders on pitch,few dcent players,hendrick,coleman,hoolahan,brady,long but just not a good enough youth set up either etc,mcCartney was shocking
Tactics seemed all wrong also imo,could be a longtime before we qualify again as this is an old squad ,will have to get players up with long to beat italy which looks v unlikely. |

Any team setting up with a lone striker is in trouble from the start ,they are hoping for snippets ,tells me all I want to know about them . They lack beleif and it is transported to the opposition , okay our players are not top class and are certainly limited ,but at least give it a go ,enjoy the ocassion ,if we get hammered so what ,nothing is expected of us anyway .The joy has been taken out of the game by over coaching . Tell me one team in the whole of Europe who are worse than us technically ,there isin't one. Even the poorest teams in Africa are more comfortable on the ball than us.

Absolute nail on the head. It only works if you have a top class target man (Costa, Drogba etc...) and the supporting midfielders need to chip in with their fair amount of goals and must have pace/movement. Ireland have none of these. You're absolutely spot on about over coaching. The best footballers in the world have always been street footballers......over coaching is killing the game. |

Croatia,s first half against Czech and the at least a match of the Spanish have for me played the best so far,i like their style, very good team and 7/4 against Portugal look the best "value" of this weekends matches.
Overall fair play to Ireland,they deserved a Swedish win,brutal against the Belgiums but tried their hearts out against the Italians, would like all love a win against the French mainly for Henri's handball but only hoping. |
