Which two countries are the kidnapping capitals of the world? Australia and Canada!!!!
Official figures from the United Nations show that there were 17 kidnaps per 100,000 people in Australia in 2010 and 12.7 in Canada.
That compares with only 0.6 in Colombia and 1.1 in Mexico.
So why haven't we heard any of these horror stories? Are people being grabbed off the street in Sydney and Toronto, while the world turns a blind eye?
No, the high numbers of kidnapping cases in these two countries are explained by the fact that parental disputes over child custody are included in the figures. If one parent takes a child for the weekend, and the other parent objects and calls the police, the incident will be recorded as a kidnapping, according to Enrico Bisogno, a statistician with the United Nations.
Comparing crime rates across countries is fraught with difficulties - this is well known among criminologists and statisticians, less so among journalists and commentators...and those with agendas!
Now, The Swedish police did record the highest number of offences - about 63 per 100,000 inhabitants - of any force in Europe, in 2010. The second-highest in the world.
On the face of it, it would seem Sweden is a much more dangerous place than these other countries. But that is a misconception, according to Klara Selin, a sociologist at the National Council for Crime Prevention in Stockholm. She says you cannot compare countries' records, because police procedures and legal definitions vary widely.
"In Sweden there has been this ambition explicitly to record every case of sexual violence separately, to make it visible in the statistics," she says.
"So, for instance, when a woman comes to the police and she says my husband or my fiance raped me almost every day during the last year, the police have to record each of these events, which might be more than 300 events. In many other countries it would just be one record - one victim, one type of crime, one record."
The thing is, the number of reported rapes has been going up in Sweden - it's almost trebled in just the last seven years. In 2003, about 2,200 offences were reported by the police, compared to nearly 6,000 in 2010.
So something's going on.
But Klara Selin says the statistics don't represent a major crime epidemic, rather a shift in attitudes. The public debate about this sort of crime in Sweden over the past two decades has had the effect of raising awareness, she says, and encouraging women to go to the police if they have been attacked.
The police have also made efforts to improve their handling of cases, she suggests, though she doesn't deny that there has been some real increase in the number of attacks taking place - a concern also outlined in an Amnesty International report in 2010.
"There might also be some increase in actual crime because of societal changes. Due to the internet, for example, it's much easier these days to meet somebody, just the same evening if you want to. Also, alcohol consumption has increased quite a lot during this period.
"But the major explanation is partly that people go to the police more often, but also the fact that in 2005 there has been reform in the sex crime legislation, which made the legal definition of rape much wider than before."
The change in law meant that cases where the victim was asleep or intoxicated are now included in the figures. Previously they'd been recorded as another category of crime.
So an on-the-face-of-it international comparison of rape statistics can be misleading.
Botswana has the highest rate of recorded attacks - 92.9 per 100,000 people - but a total of 63 countries don't submit any statistics, including South Africa, where a survey three years ago showed that one in four men questioned admitted to rape.

South Africa has the highest instance of rape and violent rape,Sweden is second Its nonsense to claim that the rise in rape in one of the most sexually liberal country in the world is down to women reporting it. Its down to the influx of North African migrants. The figures are so stark the Swedes have refused to allow the nationality of the rapist to be stated. The sentences passed down on some of the gang rapists have been risible,political correct judges have been lenient because they are adjusting to life in Sweden. |

Its not husbands having non consensual sex with their wives,its not women learning to report the crime,all the violent rapes are committed by North African immigrants,the gang rapes are the speciality of the Somalians. The women of Sweden know who the culprits are,its not uncommon for Swedish women to dye their hair or wear a headscarf to put off their would be attackers. |

I don't don't know the facts regarding the rise of rapes in Sweden, however the influx of North African immigrants is to be welcomed as they will work for the minimum wage which is great for the corporate world we all find ourselves in now

Every racist anti-immigration website peddles this 'Rape Capital of the World' nonsense, despite the fact the stats are comparatively meaningless because they cannot be compared on an apples to apples basis, not to mention the fact that over a quarter of the worlds countries don;t even publish the stats.

I'd be interested in the statistics for Britain if anyone has them off-hand. Reading newspapers etc , there seems to be a massive increase in rapes by non nationals such as the case during the week in a shopping centre car park and an attacjk in a ladbrokes shop a while back

Swedish women know the danger,the Swedish government brought in a law preventing the press referring to the nationality of convicted rapists to stop a backlash.
I don't normally like anecdotal evidence but my son lives outside Malmo,he wants to move. His wife is Swedish and works in Malmo,she wears a headscarf,all her friends are frightened,the figures are frightening. There is even a problem with some Swedish migrants crossing over to Norway and committing crime. Malmo will shortly be a Muslim city and is favourite to be the first under Sharia Law. |

Putting aside any crime statistics real or perceived, Europe can not take this big influx of people. It will only lead to trouble, while Germany have and are going beyond the call of duty. There are elements in their society that won't tolerate it. And before people get on the racist bandwagon, look how the South Africans treat the Zimbabweans who have fled to South Africa. Although to mention black on black violence will to the PC brigade probably deem me racist

Sad day Wildman, I can't believe Sweden has gone this way. I can remember about thirty years ago a story where the authorities would take into care Indian girls who were being forced into arranged marriages. If I remember correctly all the girls had to say was "They were not being allowed to grow up in the Swedish way"

I watched a programme the other night on Channel 4 this young lad said when I get to England they will give me a home and benefits "Yeah right, dream on" was my response. Needless to say at the end of the programme there he was in a flat in Glasgow and getting benefits. I'm pretty sure there plenty of British citizens who could of done with that flat. Fu ck me, now Emma Thompson is banging on about letting the migrants in, pretty sure they won't be her neighbours. She now gone on to say if they were white we would have a different response, don't think the Poles, Romanians etc feel welcomed with open arms. One thing I hate more than the left is the rich left !!!!!

I have never insisted that there is no rape problem in Sweden.
My issue is with the misleading assertion that it is the 'rape capital of the world'. It isn't. Incidentally rape incidents tend to be higher in countries with high alcohol consumption and reduced sunlght hours, such as Sweden. Also global rape incidents are thought to be trending upwards due to increased porn useage and what is known as the Saville effect whereby women are more prepared to come forward to make reports. These need to be factored in to any analysis of recent trends. |

Again going back many years there was a Black gang in Brixton called the "Jackals" who went around mugging people, when the ringleader was caught and questioned he was asked "Were any of your victims black"? "No they were all white" was his response. Clear cut racist attacks you would think and be registered so.
