TED VEALE is now clear favourite for the Connacht Hotel (QR) Handicap on the opening day of the Galway festival after attracting support this morning. Tony Martin's charge has been backed from 7/1 and is now generally a 5/1 shot for the feature event which goes to post at 6.50pm. The trainer/jockey combination of Tony Martin and Steven Clements have won the last two renewals of the €80,000 prize. Modem has also proven popular for the amateur contest and is now best priced 8/1 having been backed from 12/1.
Earlier on the card Johannes Vermeer is the one for money in the Claregalwayhotel.ie (C&G) EBF Maiden. Aidan O'Brien's charge was third on his Tipperary debut when sent off an odds-on shot. He appeared second choice on jockey bookings for tonight's race with Joseph O'Brien on newcomer Unicorn but has shortened significantly from 11/2 to 3/1.
Dermot Weld saddles the favourite in the seven-furlong contest with True Solitaire best priced 5/4.

He doesn't seem to be as "lucky" tomorrow 1112,whether right or wrong i thought he was always a bit "lucky" in getting a horse just inside a handicap band,ie 79 in a 50-80 but that is just conjecture. Two hard looking days to kick off this imo.

Bachasson got favourite backers off to the perfect start at the Galway festival when running out an easy winner of the opening Galway bay hotel & Radisson Novice Hurdle at Ballybrit. The Willie Mullins-trained gelding was a solid 5/4 shot for the two-mile contest for four-year-olds and moved smoothly into the lead going to the second last.
Market rival Zafayan (11/8) was under pressure to go second at the penultimate flight and never looked a danger in the straight. Ruby Walsh asked Bachasson for an effort after the last and he powered clear for a 16-length success. The winner is owned by Edward O'Connell and carries the same colours as super-star chaser Un De Sceaux.
Mullins said afterwards:- "This seems to be another lucky purchase. He didn't cost the earth but he's able to go and able to jump. "He won two mile-and-a-half races in France at country tracks rather than metropolitan tracks but they seem to have been lucky again."
Asked to compare him with last year's winner Mckinley, a subsequent Grade 1 winner, Mullins added:- "This fella could be better. He has surprised me, he surprised me the day he won in Sligo. I was hoping he might win but it was the manner he won. "It was very unusual for Ruby to do what he did today. With a circuit to go he pulled wide and went up the outside of them all. He felt they weren't going fast enough, had him boxed in, in a pocket and were trying to slow down the pace.
"He pulled out went wide and he raced the whole way up the back, into the straight and up the straight again. That's a fair performance from any horse I think. "He took no prisoners but that's the kind of confidence he was giving Ruby to be able to do that. "We'll look for a nice novice for him now."
Walsh said:- "I thought we were going quite steady over the first couple of hurdles. Robbie had me in a pocket and I couldn't quite get out. I had to cut back behind him and come around him and then put a bit of pace into the race. "We were going quite slow. I thought walking it it was only good to yielding for jumping and that's how it rode on my horse so I was anxious to be stepping on the pace a bit. "He's a AQPS bumper winner in France and has plenty of stamina in his pedigree. I don't know how good of a race it was but he's two from two and can't do anymore. "I don't think he was the dearest horse and he's an exciting horse to own."

Early days and realise i could end up looking a big eejit but Mr Welds almost invincible flow of winners won't happen this year, has been a bit disappointing so far(2 days). Seems this year a fairly marked shift away from his "Cheltenham" and given what he has this season it's right.

A long shot but could W. Mullins steal Dermot's "crown"? Wouldn't expect DW to draw a blank with his 3 shorties today but if only 1 obliges the 1.01 before the start could be shakey despite relatively few entries left for WM.

Just read there that it works on some silly points system ie 5 points for a win and 3 for 2nd,1 for 3rd and not most winners, DW has a good chance of retaining it yet on that basis even though WM has twice as many winners of now.

Looks very clear unfortunately and other than the bumper Mullins will be lucky to get points tomorrow,i would be surprised if the books even knew the rules myself as there wasn't any need due to it being a one horse race for so many years.

I thought it was going to be decided on how much pink dye that you put in your hair, and I had a big lump on Dermot. He has it in with 20 years so he was hardly going to get beat this year . The rain wouldn't have helped as it may have caused the pink stuff to run down his face.

Barry Geraghty faces at least two months on the sidelines after breaking his right arm in a fall at Market Rasen. "Barry has a fractured right humerus. He'll be coming home tomorrow and will see a specialist on Monday with a view to whether he requires surgery or not for it," said the Irish Turf Club's senior medical officer, Dr Adrian McGoldrick. "He'll be out for two to three months with that." The first big meeting Geraghty will miss will be the seven-day Galway Festival that starts on Monday week.

I'm not sure of the prices but think Willie Mullins should be backed for top trainer, last I heard was Weld was 1/5 so Mullins must at least be corresponding odds against.
I have fond memories of the place but despite it being near to me doubt if I will go this year The racing is generally the lowest of the low yet the place will be packed, fortunes will be bet on low grade flat races.

"Monkeys and bags of sands" (his repeated embarrassing description) being thrown around on a multitude of sports like confetti. Not a word of substance in either article and truly embarrassing.

I did think Right Honourable with half the country had a luckless debut, may well win tomorrow but not that easy with Brutal having a chance through Slaney Street and Courage Under Fire's strong looking last run. First book to price up (betfair sportsbook who we all know their reputation) has already giving it to Right Honorable at 8/15. Courage Under Fire is 11/4, someone has backed him at bang on evs on the exchange for just north of 1k(is there a wang off that or what?). Tough first day and agree with earlier post, beware of the hype for the meeting.

I think people complain too much about the quality at this meeting. Sure there are plenty of low grade handicaps but they're very competitive affairs. We get one very good handicap every day and nearly all the non-handicaps are above average. Good maidens, novice hurdles, novice chases and bumpers. Right Honourable against Courage Under Fire will be very interesting tomorrow, for me both should have won last time. Courage Under Fire has the better form but Right Honourable is less exposed and received a much more filthy ride last time. At 11/4 Courage Under Fire looks very tempting but prices very early.

Low grade racing ? I have seen Don cossack,, annie power, dodging bullets, carlingford loch , this years english national winner, the last irish national winer all at galway ..... Two cheltenham bumper winners due up this week ..... not to mention miss united, rebel fitz, cause of causes. 9 strides between the last two chase fences and a 2 furlong run in is a stiff test for any decent chaser.... seriously ...low grade racing???

Few thoughts on the week ahead, mainly Goodwood! Goodwood is a great spot for the front of the market. Funny for a supposedly tricky track, but it is; maybe because the top jockeys there ride with this potential hazard in mind.
The Sussex: Strong feeling that The Gurkha is going to win this and whatever happens he will go off about a point shorter than the 5/2 with Paddy Power. The Eclipse was one of the rare occasions where O'Brien would have been right in saying that one of his horses was too pacy to fully see out the trip.
Think we can all agree that Moore messed up at Ascot. Galileo Gold is obviously good, but will always be vulnerable to something with real star quality. Kevin Prendergast was extremely bullish before Ascot, but has been an awful lot more circumspect since to the extent that I wouldn't be surprised if they duck this and go for one of the French races where they will get cut. I was very taken with Awtaad, but he stopped at Ascot, really just seemed to stop.
The biggest threat might come from Ribchester who seems to be improving at a rate of knots. One could have called him the winner a long way out in the Jersey and it probably doesn't reflect great on the trainer that he put in a display like that and wasn't in the St James Palace. He has 3.5 lengths to make up with Galileo Gold from Newmarket and talent wise, I'd say there mightn't be much between them. If at his best, he'll travel well into this and still be there at the furlong pole at the least. The caveat is that the trainer has no history of producing 'real' horses for a day. Ribchester was 50's for the Guineas and you could get 8's about him the morning of the Jersey.
I think he'll follow Awtaad home and will be a big force next season as a 4yo in a Paco boy kind of way.
A few more, a bit more briefly hopefully: It is pretty well established that Aidan O'Brien runs a Highland Reel type in the Vintage Stakes, ie. not one of his best and overall he has a pretty rotten record in the race.
I could see Boynton confirming the form from Newmarket with War Decree. Adam Kirby was very complimentary of Boynton post-race. He is a jockey whose opinion I have grown to respect. He was extremely complimentary about Tis Marvellous after his winning of only a modest Windsor maiden and he went on to win a weakish French Group Race easily today. Clive Cox is one of the better English trainers and him using Kirby would make me think that this is one of the cleverer flat jockeys. Also thought he acquitted himself well when John Gosden lacerated him and cost him his job for his AW exploits at Ascot. War Decree had huge market confidence behind him at Newmarket, he might be just what he is and that is another meeting O'Brien never runs much at.
Lets hope Appleby hasn't galloped the sh!t out of Boynton since. I'd nearly back him e/w at 5/2 only for the possibility he'd bomb.
Lennox Stakes: Home of the Brave must have a great chance in the Lennox. Pacy horses that travel well do great around here. Hugo Palmer is an excellent trainer whose horses tend to run to market expectations. 9/4 is fine
Lumiere goes to France, where knowing Mark Johnston, they will find out she doesn't get a mile or she might just run no sort of race. She'd have been the threat. I've never fancied Dutch Connection as a racehorse in a race of any consequence.
Would fancy Godolphin's yoke in the Richmond Stakes as well, with the usual caveat that it is right on the day. Very impressive maiden winner. Hannon keeps saying Mehmas doesn't have much scope and this is going to surely catch us soon. He seems to have to work hard every race he has and you need to travel around here.
If Ulysees handles the track, I'd expect him to win the Gordon Stakes at 4's. They obviously thought the world of him and chucked him in at the deepend in the Derby. Stoute won a big handicap at the weekend with a similar sort of horse that disappointed at Ascot. Maybe his are going better now, I think this is a poor enough race.
Idaho will surely murder them in the Great Voltigeur if he shows up, the opposition here could be pitiful.
In the King George Stakes 5f sprint, I'd fancy the 3yo filly Easton Angel. This thing travelledbrilliantly when just pipped by one of Prescott's in an open company listed race last time. If she takes this up, I'd be with her. I'd fancy Muthmir (behind her in the same race, probably prepping for this) if she doesn't as he is a similar type in the way he races.
In the Plate, I thought Alechi Inois was made for this last season. Apparently he didn't care for the hustle and bustle. Mullins wouldn't waste his time trying again I feel (despite possible lack of alternatives) and he has more experience this time. 2lb higher, but I don't think that was what did for him last time. Doesn't look a crazily hot renewal and the position of Road to Riches in the market suggests there mightn't be much lurking near the bottom.
Hurdle looks tough, Could see Rock the World shortening and he's a horse I like.

Thanks man. Still a big appetite on the forum for the top races. I still enjoy the place a lot, whatever anyone says. I'd say there are a lot of lurkers who read but don't post.

I'm going to try and make a better effort to contribute when someone puts up stuff on the bread'n'butter. They're usually good threads when they get going and a bit of momentum. There used to be winter Friday night Dundalk threads with 50+ posts, would be cool to get back to that.

The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Give Thanks Stakes at Cork today could mark the turning point in the seasonal fortunes of Dermot Weld as the leading trainer recorded his first Irish Group winner this year as his Aga Khan owned Eziyra landed the Group 3 contest. Ridden by Pat Smullen, the daughter of Teofilo, stretched clear of her rivals inside the final furlong to score a two and a half lengths win over Bloomfield. The virus which has hit Weld’s horses has been one of the talking points of the 2017 flat season and while Weld’s Zhukova did win the Man o’ War Stakes in Belmont Park in May, that top level win was the sole Group success the Melbourne Cup and Derby winning trainer has enjoyed this year.
Following Eziyra’s success, a relieved Weld stated “it was lovely to see Classic form upheld. The ground is probably as soft as she wants and that was a little concern I had. She came out of the Oaks very well and it was an excellent renewal, as I said at the time, and she has progressed to today. “I’ll look at a race like the Group 2 Prix de Royallieu, at Longchamp on Arc weekend, which would be the logical follow on for her. “She is very talented, is a Group winner as a two year old, is a very consistent and is very adaptable ground-wise too. She is physically not the strongest but mentally is very very strong and it was nice coming back that she won a Group race for us today.”
Weld was notably quiet, and indeed attended just once, at last week’s Galway festival and today admitted “this has been my worst year - totally. People have been critical of me but I know I’m not the only one to have had a virus. I’m also not the only vet to have had a virus, ask John Oxx and Mark Johnston. Doctors get serious illnesses too and in this game we value our health and our animals’ health. “I’ve told everyone for six or seven weeks that we’ve had a problem and that’s it, but we’re getting out of it now.” “It was tough (watching Galway) but Galway has changed dramatically and there’s a lot more national hunt racing there than there used to be, and also more handicaps. The ground was softer and it was a change in scene. “You’d never know, we might be back next year and I wouldn’t write us off just yet! Thank you for your support.” Weld later completed an across-the-card double when Zabalan won the 8.10 race at Roscommon. Tks Mr Weekes.
