A real insight into the Gay side of things , the blone lady got it spot on ..She pointed out that as individuals business  people had no issue with gays , yet felt that they felt threatened by them when refusing to do stuff that was against their beliefs ..I.E..That bakery incident up North ..Waters spoke about Parents giving up rights that we were not even aware of ...The Minister bowed her head in shame when the truth was pointed out to her .  She was very uncomfortable ...Another reason for voting no ....

I don't know what would be the going rate there,i'd imagine there would be plenty of "poverty stricken girls" in this climate. Would they have a case for counselling in later years due to that they had stronger maternal feelings than they allowed for? I think that would be a fairly high percentage.Your idyllic avatar scenario Oz will be at some cost.

You're just making presumptions, what may happen, then again who expected homophobic bigots to come up with anything less

As it is I ideally do think a child should have a mother and a father but it does not guarantee a better or more stable upbringing
Report pa lapsy May 6, 2015 12:49 PM BST
Bit harsh with the name calling Premier,i think it is a valid presumption nevertheless and potentially a can of worms,i don't dispute that a child may well be better off with a gay couple in a lot of cases but believe the child is fundamentally better with a father and a mother.

From EEC membership to treaty after treaty referenda, contraception, divorce the decline of religious fundamentalism; people want the "dark ages" and isolationism and the priest in the corner in his pomp.

Personally I could not care myself and would not bother having arguments on the matter if those on the "no" side actually put up a decent reason for the way they're going to vote

There's not a family I know that are not affected by the "trauma" of a gay son or daughter. Living in (relatively) rural Ireland the stigma attaching to this is still enormous and the parents and grandparents are usually bereft. People have coping mechanisms but there always seems to be the sadness in the eye whenever such loved children are mentioned. Its usually beyond comprehension and family seek solace in blame. (Off hand I can think of a farmer neighbours son and the stellar academic daughter of a good friend who both took years to accept their "fate").

I think many will vote "yes" who may have qualms about the so-called "promotion" of the LGBT lifestyle but anyone reading the personal histories of those outed as teenagers or forced to flee abroad to find an accepting home must vote for change because the dreaded gay person is probably living closer to you think you think.

For all the fine arguments of the no side I will be utterly ashamed if this country fails to vote YES.

Jonas and Lars will be purchasing this unfortunate African girl.
The word orphan had to change its meaning to facilitate the amount of celebrities getting their trophy  child in Africa.

Royal Academy definition of Trauma is a lot different than mine.

What is the difference between Civil Union and Gay marriage.
We were told that Civil Union was a great thing this guaranteed them inheritance rights and acknowledged them as next of kin.
RTE had a couple of newsreaders on chat shows and a some other couples telling us how great these civil unions are but as usual these lobbies never go away.
When they get this Yes vote through they will celebrate for awhile but then a new campaign will start,more than likely a request for polygamy.

Its not anti gay to think a child is entitled to know his mother and father.
The two prominent advocates of a No vote on The Late Late Show debate were gay,they get the No sides point.

I pose this question genuinely what is so wrong with the Civil Union rules brought in with great fanfare,why the need to change the definition of marriage.

That post is very well put by Royal Academy, haven't been following this as closely as some as I feel it isn't my fight as such but RA's is by far the best and most authentic sounding account of the human aspect I have read.

I understand there are negatives to it, but I will be voting yes on the basis that I don't like the idea of telling two consenting adults what they can't do, you'd also hope that it would make them feel that bit more included in Irish society if they don't feel that already.

I think most of us can foresee issues and maybe a bit of heartache is inevitable down the line with single-sex families for some when the kids are old enough to understand their providence shall we say. But they'll have to bear that and hopefully remember the good reasons their parents decided to have children.

In short, I think on the balance they (Gay,Lesbian,TG) deserve their crack at this.

I disagree with neil about the merits of royal academy's so called heartfelt posts, I found it both nauseating and insulting in equal measure. To paint out rural Irland as some sort of backward and neanderthal like wild west is only an attempt to rally the troops in the more affluent and liberal south dublin. There are plenty of gay people able to prosper in high profile positions throughout rual ireland i.e donal og cusack from cloyne, we even had a gay rose of tralee this year. Believe it or not RA, we actually have internet access and satelite television down here now so we're not as backward and ignorant as you'd like to make out.

It is disingenuous to paint the issue out as an issue of equality. Gay people have been fully welcomed and integrated into society. Just because someone wants to protect the sanctity of marriage and the family and believes that a child is better served by having both a mother and father does not mean they are necessarily raving homophobes.

No one is stopping that fella fro tullamore from riding every man he meets from here to buenios aries but that doesn't mean we need to completely change the constitution and meaning of parenthood and marriage just to accommodate him. That story had no connection whatsoever to do with the upcoming referendum.

Donal Og on the subject:

He was 6,000 miles away from home in South Africa when his sister Treasa rang him at his hotel to inform him that rumours were swirling around at home that he was gay.

He flew home to tell his family personally knowing that his father in particular would take the news very hard.

“Now my father is a man who would fight for his family but he's 63 years of age. He's a crane driver. Building sites can be cruel, hard places, he didn't need this,” he said.

When he did come out and tell them “the other, secret story of this son they had reared in this house,” his father started asking questions, he recalled.

“There was confusion in every line of his face.

“He said he was a man of the world, and that he had lived and worked in London for 10 years but he thought, well, if he had a son like this, he would dress differently and behave differently, “ he said.

“‘They all have square jaws,’” he said at one point. ‘But you don't. You're into hurling,’” he quoted his father as saying.

“Then he said: ‘Right, you know the way we need to deal with this? You need to get fixed.’”

Later, once the shock had subsided, Donal revealed how his father warned him he faced a hard road ahead.

“He shook his head slowly and said: ‘Like f*** it, Donal Og, the abuse you're going to get about this.”
Report newapproach May 6, 2015 10:39 PM BST

Give us some examples of this homophobia

http://reallyopen.com/understanding

Take some data from Canada for examplel

In comparison to heterosexuals, homosexuals are 2.5 times more likely and bisexuals 4 times more likely to be victims of violent crime. 1

In 2010, 16% of hate crimes reported in Canada were motivated by sexual orientation.2 In 2009, this rate was 13 %.3

In the workplace, one quarter of people who are LGBT conceal their sexual orientation from all or most of their colleagues. Less than one quarter are open about their orientation. In 40% of cases, people conceal their orientation when there are indications it will not be accepted, and in 33% of cases, they do so because a colleague is homophobic.

In secondary schools, 38.6% of students are victims of homophobia, through insults, teasing, exclusion, etc. Absenteeism among these students is twice that of other students. Children who are victims of homophobia have a weaker sense of belonging, and their academic goals are less well defined.

Keith in Ireland;

I never experienced it physically. Although when young and insecure, I was painfully aware of how name calling and physical abuse would be used on others who had behaviours based on stereotypes. When closeted, my family and friends spoke negatively of and made fun of homosexuals. This really hurt and delayed my coming out. When I did come out, I was informed by many that I couldn’t be gay because I didn’t act like ‘them’!

I grew up in a working class area and somehow a relationship developed with my best mate and later love of my life. He was a very talented footballer and very masculine, like myself. We both worked as apprentices in the building trade. He couldn’t handle the negative stereotypes and society judging him and looking down upon him for being gay. Eventually, he had enough of all that and hung himself. His 12-year-old brother found his body.

Having my nephew being told in school by a priest that homosexuality was wrong and he should pray for me;
Having my sexuality as a topic of discussion in the workplace;
Having people assume I like shipping and fashion as I am gay;
Being dropped from my local GAA team when I came out;
Being told gay people are not suitable for sport;
Being told I do not appear ‘very gay’;
Not being allowed to see a sick partner after an accident in a Catholic-run hospital as I was not next of kin (the family had to approve first);
Being told that my career prospects would be damaged by being out as gay;
People linking homosexuality with paedophilia in my presence;
Having media articles discussing how to make me a lesser citizen of Ireland;
Being told I am lucky to live in a society that allows homosexuality;
Being put at the ‘gay’ table at weddings;
Being asked how I know for certain I am gay if I have not been with a woman;
Not being able to donate blood despite having full health checks;
Being asked to stop coaching kids in GAA after I came out;
Having females say, ‘I want a gay best friend’ or ‘I feel safe with you’;
Being stopped going into a normal bar by bouncers saying, ‘You guys should go to your own places’;

http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/two-young-women-savagely-beaten-in-homophobic-attack-31011386.html

The young women were walking in the direction of a food outlet at approximately 2am when two men began "firing homophobic slurs" at the couple.
"We had literally left our apartment only minutes before when these two grown men started shouting abuse at us about being lesbians," Tipperary-born Roisin said.
"Initially we shouted back as we are used to this kind of abuse - but then they walked back towards us and started shoving us roughly."
The young women have described the men as being aged in their early to mid-20s and said they were "well-dressed, as if coming back from a night out".
The verbal abuse quickly escalated to physical violence, according to Ms Murphy, who is originally from Newcastle West.
"Suddenly, the men pushed us to the ground. They were stepping on our chests, they kneed and kicked us," the student said.
The men appeared to leave after approximately ten minutes - after taking the girls' hats - but one returned "which was the worst part" of the assault, according to Ms Prendergast.
"We thought it was over. Then one guy came back, threw Ciara against a shop window and ripped up her hat in front of her," she said.
When the unprovoked vicious attack was finally over, Ms Murphy lay unconscious on the street following a knock to her head, while Ms Prendergast had been beaten and was in shock beside her.
Two passers-by came upon the young women some time later and immediately alerted the emergency services and the gardai, who responded to the scene.
Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident - but they say that the CCTV footage on the street of the incident is of too poor quality to be used for identification purposes.
The two women said they are overwhelmed with the support they have received on social media following the attack.
"So far we have no information as to who the two men are. But we have been inundated with messages of support," said Ms Prendergast.

Roisin Prendergast (20) and her girlfriend 17-year-old Ciara Murphy were left bleeding and unconscious following an unprovoked attack on Cruises Street in Limerick last Sunday week.

Oh dear ozy you seem very angry. Poor pats being called names?? Maybe he should grow a back bone and go to his local children's hospital or cancer ward to see people really deserving sympathy. Being dropped off his gaa team? Maybe he just didn't cut the mustard anymore and someone was better than him.....typical liberal always blame others

As for the Limerick story above, hardly the first attack to happen in that city. sounds like drunken behaviour. Would it be in the papers if they were called fat or redheads instead of lesbians? I doubt it. Just another pr article for the liberals. Plenty of assaults every weekend in this country don't get mentioned

It's great so far though we have 2 examples of homophobia in Ireland LaughLaugh

" having my nephew told by a priest that homosexuality is wrong "

This is put up by Ozymandius as an example of the terrible things endured by Gays.
It will shortly be a crime here but this is just the Catholic position,homosexual acts are a sin.

The religion of peace so beloved by Ozymandius don't teach that they are a bit more severe,rather than wrong they say punishable by death.

That might be relevant if we were living in Saudi Arabia.  We're not.  Nor is Shari Law imminent in Ireland as you maintain.  It's frankly pathetic how you shoehorn your Islamaphoba into every discusssion.

You repeatedy claim that I love Islam...I don't give a t0ss about Islam...my stance on their religion is perfectly clear and straightforward...it is essential to distinguish between Fundamentalist Muslims and ordinary everyday Muslims.  They are a breed apart no matter how often you claim otherwise.

Your like the Labour Party you have a soft spot for them.

You were grief stricken when some Irish Jihadists were killed in Syria.
You were bleating about a Muslim family jailed for rioting in Egypt.

You hate your own and love the strange.

I am Tory through and through, I have no time for the Labour party whatsoever.  Am praying for a good show from Dave today, I think he has done an excellent job to date.

I recall nothing about the next two claims.

I look at the person first, not the passport.  Without wishing to sound pompous, being younger, more broad minded and more widely travelled than you, what might appear strange and foreign to you, is ordinary and every day to me.

When you think of all the wide ranging insults that have been fired at poor Wonks over the years, from his pov the greatest slur of all was that one of his sons was gay.

That's terrifying.  I mean its not a slur or insult at all.  But his thinking is par for the course.

As I have explained to you by PM, it was a once off remark to illustrate a pertinent example of Homophobia in Irish Society.  I never claimed that they slurs were true....I don't know if they are or aren't.....either way  it shouldnt really bother you..

Your OTT reacions, and threats to 'drive me from the forum' are laughable.  Go ahead ..make a fool of yourself..you might as well tattoo Homophobe on your forhead!

Just on Limerick Racingqueen. No it is not great, but in my experience the big country garrison towns are a lot worse. I've been for pints in Tipp Town and Clonmel having played soccer there and both places are dog ****g rough. Pal of mine got his face reconfigured in Waherford, 3 years in college in Limerick and never had a problem.

Bottom line, it happens everywhere; but I think you're less likely to get the **** kicked out of ya on a night out in Limerick (if ya stick to the established places) than many other towns, maybe if only for the fact that there are more Gards and doormen.
Report neill d May 8, 2015 10:34 AM BST
Notice a lot of lairy Northern lads getting pissed off at the hipsters in Galway. They'd be right, too.

Another staple out there is the old lad giving out **** to the brash yank smoking a cigar whilsht taking a piss.
