Pollsters eh? I'm no genius and a lot of the nuances of the political world go over my head but I think a lot of the store put in these pre-election polls underestimates the fact that most people in the UK don't understand politics and what they are hearing and seeing in the run-up, they are liable to vote any which way within a certain tolerance.

The Tories knew they just needed to sew a seed of doubt re Farage, and that most of the constituency of Thanat whatever would either just accept him as the 'bad guy' or wouldn't know where to look to get the other side of the story. It worked beautifully.

What other side of the story?

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/sep/20/ukip-biggest-gaffes

And that's far from an up to date list.

Should have said 'his' side of the story, point I was trying to make is that often all it takes to 'swing' an idiot is to get to him first!

More broadly, there are a lot of people in the UK who definitely won't vote Labour and another crowd who won't vote Tory. That is the only thing they definitely won't do, so to have a load of people for weeks telling us that even a slim Tory majority couldn't happen was a bit of a farce............ and yeah this is all in hindsight and no I didn't make any money on it! but I think a lot of these pundits are to electoral outcomes what Mick Fitz is to racing results.

I think the Ed Milliband factor was key....two candidates for PM and one was a figure of ridicule.  Easy to say you will vote for him, harder to do it in practice.
By:
neill d
When: 08 May 15 10:13
I wonder did people think that apart from being a goof, that Milliband would have had to align himself with the SNP and it would have re-opened all of this stuff about Scottish Independence and at the least ended up with a heap of money being spent on social/lefty programmes up there. Don't think there was any appetite for that and people said **** him.

He has something about him..... very authentic, charismatic.

Might have been a great Tory (I note he left them over Europe), could've been another Boris.

Maybe born in the wrong era slightly, but that might also be his draw.

Yeah, you'd just kinda say, "great guy, shame about his politics." There is merit in some of what he says to a certain point, but then he extends that point to an extreme that makes you write him off.

There's the sense that if you align yourself with him, that you're standing with the skinhead on the train in Paris.

Looks like Nigel Farage will have plenty of time to drink his pints Ozy but unlike your photo his chin will be touching his Thorax,  At the end of the day im only Interested [like most on the irish forum]  how the result will affect our fair land.

I think some have a wider interest in politics, some live or have lived in the UK, plus its a topical subject.  Some are obsessed with immigration which tends to spill over into a discussion of UK politics.

I can never get over how at least 30% of the people dont bother to vote Ozy, a few years in N/korea might change there minds...Here in the R.O.I we will be lucky to get 55% on the upcoming  referendum.

I don't think PR would suit UKIP,they wouldn't get transfers.

Neill Ds comment is telling and typical, there is this irrational dislike of UKIP which has been nurtured by the mainstream media.
Mobs follow them round, there are constant threats of violence, you have to be brave to openly support UKIP.

Emotional fluffy types can't bear being told some home truths,so when you criticise health tourism the heart strings are pulled by some sob story that works with women.

Sadly I don't think the party can survive without Farage,he has looked jaded this campaign maybe a long break away would rejuvenate Farage.

It rather one eyed and pathetic to denigrate hatrid of UKIP as irrational;

After all there re so many rational reasons to hate them;

* A Ukip candidate is suspended over suggestions that compulsory abortion should be considered for foetuses with Down's syndrome or spina bifida.

* It emerges that a Ukip candidate allegedly described gay sex as "disgusting" and said homosexuals were not "normal" on a Ukip online forum. The Ukip leader, Nigel Farage, insists he would not expel members for voicing "old-fashioned" views about homosexuality.

* The chairman of Ukip's youth wing is sacked after speaking out in favour of gay marriage. Olly Neville says he felt "let down" at his removal, which he claims contradicted Ukip's libertarian philosophy.

* the party's then East Midlands chairman and Lincoln councillor Chris Pain described illegal immigrants as "sandal-wearing, bomb-making, camel-riding, goat-f******, ragheads" on his Facebook page,

and that's before we get to last weeks MP candidate vowing to put a bullet in another Asian candidate.

And on and on.  One cannot possibly dismiss the mountain of such stories as a mere smear campaign.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, smells like a duck......it'unlikely to be merely a media campaign to make you think its a duck.

If you are using facebook as evidence you are in trouble.

There were teams of volunteers scouring the records of all UKIP members, they were going back 20 years.

One of the most infamous ones was some mild criticism of a homosexual lifestyle, this was pounced on it transpired the comments were made in 1993 when he was a Conservative councillor,

There was never a mention about the Lib/dem councillor jailed for aggravated sexual assault, not a word about all the Labour councillors in Newham done for electoral fraud, all those councillors in Rotherham and Rochdale now facing prosecution.

No party could withstand the type of scrutiny UKIP were subjected to.

Nonsesnse.

You barely have to scratch the surface to find common ugly themes.

Just look at what that MP candidate said the other day....there is just no getting away from what they are and who they represent.
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 08 May 15 16:06
The ugly themes are a wish to govern their own country,a challenge to the European experiment.

You are blinded by intolerance, you don't acknowledge the fact that far more Labour councillors got in trouble than UKIPs.
Neither do you acknowledge the criminal behaviour of the Conservative candidate in Dudley.

A lot of old white straight English people in UKIP.
This is a group its fashionable to hate,in fact compulsory to hate here.
Vincent Browne who abhors racism and is an adjudicator on these things openly said he hated Tim Henmam because he was an upper class Brit,he like you would never deem that racism.
By:
Ozymandius
When: 08 May 15 16:15
It's the common ugly themes running through the worst of UKIP behaviour that makes them stand out from other politician's predictable weaknesses and faults.

Its hugely ironic that you glibly throw the 'intolerant' label back at others when it applies to so many of UKIPs positions.

One doesn't hate the age of the person, one questions the narrowness of the mind.
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 08 May 15 16:22
To you its narrow minded to want to curb immigration.
To you its narrow minded to oppose the Islamification of Britain.
To you its narrow minded not to hate Western culture or history.

The irony is your intolerance of differing views make you the most narrow minded of them all.
By:
Ozymandius
When: 08 May 15 16:41
Nonsense...why do you always have to resort in every debate to lie and distort your opponents position;

I am CLEARLY on the record as

* Stating that immigration numbers need to be carefully managed
* A great fan of Western History and Culture
* Do not wish to see the Islamification of Britain, but the threat does not obsess my every waking moment, as it does you.

I adore the very essence of Great Britain, warm beer, the sound of leather on willow, the British sense of humour and fair play, the values they have endowed to the world etc etc.  Only this morning was I belting out 'Rule Brittania' as I cruised in my Jaguuuuaaaaar whilst the FTSE and the pound surged Cool

It seems, that in everything, like as in that train carriage, you only see what you want to see.  Its the very definition of narrow mindnednss.

You, my friend, are squinting!
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 08 May 15 16:58
No distortion.

You just have a short memory.
You openly mourned the death of Jihadists from Drogheda.
You demanded our minister intervene on behalf of rioters in Egypt.

You think this makes you enlightened and all that disagree are knuckle draggers or suffering from some mental disease.
Your opinions are formed for you, whatever is fashionable, you can neither back them up or defend them which is why you can't stand any differing views, why nearly all your discussions here end with you descending into name calling and swearing.

Its like clockwork.

Fashionable on this forum involves gay bashing, rebel songs and 'get out of my country' sentiments.  I am hardy following fashionable trends!

I don't recall the stories about jihadists or intervention in Egypt so have no idea what you are talking about, feel free to pull the threads to the top.  I have always been consistenly anti Fundamentalist.  I probably would never have mentioned Islam once on this forum if you didn't start a daily thread on it.

Thankfully the decent, well-meaning and enlightened people of Britain saw through the charade of the populist appealing fear-mongering UKIP scoundrels and consigned them to the dustbin of history.

It was the mainly destruction of Labour by the SNP that turned the election on its head, not UKIP.

Secondly on a smaller scale, the Tories benefited disproportionately from the collapse of the Liberal Democrats.

And thirdly the rise of UKIP (ironically expected to disproportionately hurt the Tories) in fact seems to have undermined the Labour performance more.

I guess more detailed analysis will emerge in the next few days.
