Remarkably and weirdly -many threads on here about sporting personalities (e.g. Rory ,A P)come to involve references to political/religious matters.
The latest on A P McCoy mentions Presbyterians for some reason !
I've noticed that references to Presbyterians tend to have a negative or derisive tinge. I think, on the whole, that this is not deserved.
It escapes many people that Presbyterians were targeted by the Penal laws as well as R Catholics because of their radical, independent, anti-establishment cast of mind.
Presbyterians were the driving force behind the United Irishmen -seen as the precursor and inspiration for so much
of subsequent Republican ideology.
Presbyterians evinced a simple basic version of Christianity-deriving from adherence to the Bible as the revealed word of God and seeing no need for bishops-and certainly not for the 'Boss Bishop; -the Pope. Given the history of the Papacy down to the current era -one can agree that the Papacy is nothing short of a corrupt ,dictatorial and malign outgrowth of ROMAN Catholicism that has little to do with genuine Christian belief or practice.
On Irish history generally -one cannot fully comprehend the course of events in Ireland without considering the broader context of European history especially over the last five centuries or so.
On culture - there is no unitary Irish culture to which everyone must somehow subscribe in order to be considered Irish.
Culture -a coherent system of beliefs ,behaviours,ritual practices and symbolic ...inter alia)- is always changing and in flux...even more so in today's world of increased travel and communication. We are free to enjoy so many cultural ideas and products today that any form of cultural prescriptivism is plainly absurd.
Hopefully people will learn to be more free and relaxed about cultural behaviours and shed old restrictive attitudes
which cause needless angst and conflict.

The fact that churches/ religions have been aligned with political operations ( including force measures wherever) throughout the ages is an historical fact . Not sure that has benefitted the world overall .
Lots of religions have what I would describe as unusual rules , most of which are an attempt to control the relevant population. Whether the basis for this is written word , revelation , sign from above , or pragmatism in someones eyes , more and more people throughout the world are questioning age old beliefs/ teachings .
Adam and Eve didn't know what they were starting .
Live and let live may be a way forward , but if any particular religion / church /state adopts aggresive attitudes to their non adherents , it bodes ill . Guess thats part of the reason the world's history is littered with wars of varying sizes .
We need rules , but whether churches have specific say in relation to laws passed is an open debate .
Henry V111 earned the title "Fidei defensor" because he fashioned something in defence of catholicism ( still on the back of the coins in my pocket ) . In the light of history , and its effect locally , thats one for the book .
