In light of yesterday's rugby extravaganza ('the greatest day of sporting drama EVER' as it has been labelled) will you:
be relaxing your draconian Ban (reminiscent of previous blanket GAA Bans) that you have audaciously placed on your grandchildren taking up this wonderful sport due to your mollycoddling, old-woman-like, OTT safety concerns?
The swarm of new kids taking up the sport, already at record levels, is set to surge further. It will be awful for them to be restricted to the sidelines, wrapped in cotton wool, watching all their pals enjoy the game,
Not a rugby man myself but yesterday showed what kind of a game it can be given a different mindset.....Three teams having to go gung ho and what a difference that made.....Teams scoring more tries in a game than they would in a year.....Ireland abandoning the stick it up your jumper rubbish.....and the other two playing with abandon.... It was marvellous and huge credit was due to Wales England and Ireland for the way they played.... Makes you wonder why teams dont release the shackles more often....its more than likely the fault of so called genius coaches who think its a feather in their cap if they can engineer some mind numbing kicking grinding victory.....

For one, the weather was perfect yesterday, which helps. Rugby really should be a Summer sport in the NH, if it was the gap between us and the SH would be much closer.
Two, the last day of the 6 Nations almost always generates points. If you have nothing to play for and fall 5% off your D that creates big opportunities for the attacking side. Plus teams have been together 7 weeks and attacking cohesion has built over time. Its much harder to attack than to defend.
Throw in an incentive to score points rather than just win the game and you get what we got yesterday.
That said, 46 missed tackles at Twickers is something of a joke, albeit hugely entertaining.

I watched a good share of all 3 games....very enjoyable....but it just shows what can happen when there is a target for these teams.... I hate negativity in sport.....nothing worse than it.....mourinho....ulster football.....ireland rugby and soccer....stoke city....that kind of stuff.... yesterdays rugby was a breath of fresh air....

Ozy, football teams are often accused of not trying when they don't have to or maybe better put not giving 100%, something i think is blown a bit out of proportion in bigger leagues although it certainly does happen, do you think that happened yesterday? As all 3 sides chasing points ran up scores far outstripping the bookmakers handicap. I would have thought Rugby sides would only play one way and that was flat out esp in 6 nations. The autumn internationals always seemed to be played in a far more competitive manner than say a football international friendly does. Obviously using a tiny sample just wondering do you think all 3 defeated sides give 100%?

It was indeed. Targets can definitely help produce spectacles.
Rugby Sevens might be your thing., Paulie. Get yourself down to Kinsale,May 2nd and 3rd, the punnani does be on tap.

I think they gave very, very close to 100%, Rock. It can be hard when you are 30 points down at the end of a hard tournament, maybe carrying an injury etc. Especially when there are huge incentives for one team and not the other. It's only a marginal falloff in application towards the end of the game, I wouldn't be questioning any teams integrity. Remember Italy scored last, Scotland damn nearly did, and France scored late on and were running them ball after the 80 mins was up.

Arguably, the Irish Cricket Team has achieved more than the Rugby Team.
A Mickey Mouse six team tournament, where realistically, only four teams are capable of winning?
The so called "Swarm of new kids taking up the sport" is mainly due to the ambitions and social climbing of enthusiastic parents. There is a huge drop off in kids playing the sport when they reach secondary school and even more so after secondary school. Kids are pushed into playing rugby rather than developing an interest in the game.
In England, there has been a drop of 25% in adults playing the game. Considering that England, in the recent past won the World Cup, this is a shocking stat.

A Mickey Mouse tournament One of the worlds great tournaments, full stadia, terrestial tv cverage, travelling fans, history and tradition, and one we have only won back to back twice! Yeee haaaw

There is a huge drop off in kids playing the sport when they reach secondary school and even more so after secondary school. Your most valid point, especially the latter one. Hard to understand why given the fact that 20 years ago, Dublin teams would have up to say 8 adult teams, not quite sure what has happened there.

I doubt there would have been any kids watching yesterdays game if they were forced to endure any of the matches from the first 5 rounds. Most of those games, most notably those involving Ireland, were about as exciting as watching paint dry and surely would have turned them off the game for life. One swallow doesn't make a summer.

You'd be surprised. Organisers report an uptake in numbers when Ireland simply win matches (God knows there are few international sports we genuinely compete in). A spectacle like yesterday is icing on the cake.

No harm in a bit of self congratulation, some achievement considering how few players we have.

have always been against it, personally, but then I enjoy the 12-9 tussles. the wider public doesn't.
the first 4 rounds were not vintage, granted, but do we want to tinker with tradition?
I'm a 'maybe' now, staunch 'no' previously.

A case must surely be also made for all the final games to start at the same time the same way they do it in the world cup and euros to prevent any sort of skullduggery.

Agreed 46 missed tackles at Twickers allowed for great entertainment. The 51 at Murrayfield was equally mystifyingand it is incredible to think that Ireland's 26 missed tackles was the most missed by any of the six teams in action on Saturday. Really goes to show how simple statistics can be so misleading. Ireland's 26 missed tackles v 25 would indicate a close battle, however gainline success stats paint a much different and more accurate picture of the attacking patterns. Ireland's 4 offloads in the game brought their total for the tournamnent to 21. A problem with that rather conservative tactic is that when you don't have consistent gainline success (as v Wales), space or numerical or physical mismatches cannot be created. A committed professional international class defence will tackle all day. Their job is made easier when not having to worry about an offload. I would much prefer Ireland to keep defences guessing.

if playing the final day match's at the same time would make for a fairer tournamnent, how do you suggest sorting out the fact that 3 teams play 3 home games and that the other 3 teams only play 2 home games.

'If ever there was a case to introduce the bonus point into the 6 nations yesterday was it."
The fact that a Grand Slam winning team might not win the championship is a huge obstacle for the introduction of the bonus point system.
A team could have 5 no bonus point wins and gain 20 points.
Another team could have 4 bonus point wins and despite a bonus point defeat to the Grand Slam winners still win the Championship.
