Bumper winner easy to find - Pity I didn't back it!
A horse with the form figures ‘FOU’ would hardly look the most appealing prospect when just looking at that but when you look in detail at the performances of Laid Back Luke in his 3 starts in Irish point to points, there’s encouragement that he could have a chance of running well in this race.
Laid Back Luke showed promise on the first of those 3 starts in the Irish pointing field at Lisronagh. Having led/raced very prominently up to that point, he started to pull away from the field with Shadow Shopper turning the bend after 5 out. They were locked together after 4 out and Laid Back Luke had just got his head in front going to 3 out when he unseated Rob James. That left Shadow Shopper about 7 lengths clear of his nearest pursuer with another gap back to the rest. He finished weakly and was eventually beaten into 2nd. I think the eventual result underplays the ability shown by Laid Back Luke as the bare form isn’t overly strong but he had got clear of the rest with Shadow Shopper going to 3 out and that horse then wilted late on. While it is an unknown, there’s a chance Laid Back Luke could have won this race and with some ease.
His next start came 2 weeks later at Borris House in a race that many people will have seen as the carnage resulted in the video being spread across social media. Having led throughout, he was challenged by Say Geronimo after 3 out but was still finding plenty in front when going the wrong side of a marker turning the final bend before 2 out. That left Say Geronimo a long way clear but he ran out (and out of the field) and Cousin Bill then unseated at 2 out having been left in front. I think it would have been close between Laid Back Luke and Say Geronimo had both completed the course and they would have finished well clear of the rest. Say Geronimo has since finished 2nd in a point and 8th in a decent bumper at Naas which suggests Laid Back Luke could have the ability to be competitive in today’s bumper.
He had been difficult at the start at Borris House and that trait was in full show on his latest outing at Tinahely when he unseated Steven Clements at the start. There is obviously a concern that these troubles at the start could show themselves again today and that is the reason for the ‘win’ bet rather than ‘each way’ but hopefully they won’t.
Although he has never completed a race, Laid Back Luke has shown a fair level of ability in 2 of those 3 starts in Irish point to points and a repeat of that ability would give him a chance today in what looks a fairly moderate bumper. Alamein ran well on debut behind Forgotten Rules but he weakened very quickly on his return at Leopardstown and there’s a chance that hard race could have left its mark. Gala Ball showed some ability on his debut while Loughmore Lord is a newcomer from a good trainer.
With 22-1 on offer, I’m happy to take a chance on Laid Back Luke starting without problems and if can repeat the ability he showed in points, that is an attractive price.

He gave it in at a bigger price but by the time I saw it and published it had come in from 33s.
He tends to always look for angles and can go on losing runs, but does pull of some big price winners.
Not great for consistent traffic I guess as the casual punter will give up following someone if there is a sequence of losers and generally misses the payday.

I will put up point to point info when I see it.He tends to look at pointers that have shown promise without going for big money or even breaking their maiden tag. Some clearly don't produce on the track but others can be value prices and it is just an opinion at any rate.
Allduck used to post about pointers but I never see him on here anymore.

Still here occasionally DV though I have a new username as the old account is dormant.
Have barely attended a p2p over the past 2-3 years since I moved to Big Smoke. As it happens I may be attending one this Sunday and will proffer my thoughts on any future sources of jam.

The lad that writes for us is based in Torquay - @Rhys_N_Williams
He attends the UK points every weekend but watches the videos from here.
Some of the performances of winning pointers can be greatly exaggerated while there can be some very promising displays in behind. It's a pity that the full video is not generally available but the bits that are can be very useful.

Well Paulie the only way you can know is looking through your own eyes. I have been guilty of buying into hype on a few occasions in relation to pointers. At least you can only blame yourself if you have seen them perform and call them wrong.
There's a lot of money to be made from maiden winners and I begrudge no trainer who chances buying store horses his turn if the buyers are opening themselves to get rode. I try not to let it cost me in terms of believing hot air though!

Correct and right....both Distant View and Tell the King.....it amazes me how people who only look at the tapes of a few fences seem to me are better judges than the fellas who actually attend and see it all....and you are right.....if they can show 3 fences....why not show it all..... And tell the king is spot on when he says you should go with your own eyes.....the amount of shiite thats spouted by these regular pointers is ridiculous.... On a side note i have noticed one particular trainer who seems prolific at these points....but not so good at the races....a few of his big money animals who have been sold are shaming themselves at their new homes.....makes you wonder was Ben Johnson his assistant trainer or what?....

The reason the rest of the video would be useful would be to see what pace the race was run at, what mistakes were made etc.
The video of Racing Pulse made him look a monster, but it seems he was very well ridden off a strong pace and was flattered by the result. He has proven to be useful but Monbeg Theatre and Royal Player were made to look vastly inferior based on the video and are every bit as good, if not better prospects at this stage.
Some of the comments about horses being very impressive are incredible. Amber Gambler reads like a future star in his review, but benefitted from two fallers in that race and would have scraped home and possibly been beaten if they stood up.
On the other hand Gunnery Sergeant looked very good at Oldtown but the comments are muted. Granted there was a slow pace in that contest, but you would suspect that if he was in the shop window, the comments might have been a lot more enthusiastic.

Thats exactly it distant.....if a horse wins a maiden well and is sold on the day for big money.....then the plaudits come reigning down on top of him.....because the guy doing the write up is fully aware its made 150k plus....so he knows its going to Willie Mullins/ Nicky Henderson.....therefore its nigh on a certainty to win plenty in the future.... Amber Gambler is a terrific example.....it made 125k so its performance is over rated.....poxed to win against a heap of rubbish....and took 5 mins to get from the back of the last to the line.....Gearoid Costelloe must be some judge....

Didn't know that Re. Winters horse DV. The other horse sent there didn't sell in the ring. If both are still in Kanturk it will be interesting to see how long before they see the track. Nine times out of ten they will devalue themselves on track debut.
I agree 100% on the issue of the repays. From 3 out is obviously important as that's when the pace lifts. A good horse will usually have a turn of foot and put distance between them and the rest late on. However, there can be any number of incidences earlier in the race that can affect the outcome (many of which are not picked up in the race comments either leaving people totally in the blank).
I have just seen that Tattersalls Ireland have developed an app whereby a p2p trainer can notify on entry that their runner is for sale. Apparently an online auction can then take place. Now when has a p2p trainer ever entered a horse that hasn't been for sale?

seems to me that p2p scene can be a closed shop. if winning maiden ends up in Closutton invariably the horse is decent as I reckon most guys will tell Willie and Harry the truth and they know they'll buy again and again. auctions are a law unto themselves but what's new there?
Its staggering how much faith owners put in trainers to execute an order to buy......the examples of wanton waste are there: every sale, every year.
on the video front, hand-held cameras are the order of the day and many of the truncated recordings are very, very poor.
I will say a p2p visit can be a great day out and I love watching the races out in the country....and a few hot toddies on the way home....bliss
