Won't have to pack it in

Someone will hunt him down after that disaster
Report applehunter February 1, 2015 3:25 PM GMT
You could tell in the tone of his voice how embarrassed he was and the flack he will get.

In  the era of exchanges these things are more under the microscope.
Report punchestown February 1, 2015 3:31 PM GMT
That was just pure sloppy/lazy in my opinion, even a precursory look at the race card would have lit the warning beacons..
Report slickster February 1, 2015 3:36 PM GMT
The fool is obviously not doing his work correctly. And he doesn't seem bothered either. Someone in charge of this debacle has got to tell him enough. Who will stand up and deliver the blow? NOBODY.
Report mrcombustible February 1, 2015 3:48 PM GMT
Won't make any difference, he has been making mistakes for years and is still in employment.
Report J.R.Hartley February 1, 2015 5:55 PM GMT
No mistake a commentator has made has ever affected a result as far as i know.....i'd be quite happy to watch racing without the annoying planks tbh.
Is there really anyone out there stupid enough to make decisions based on what a commentator is saying?
Report workrider February 1, 2015 6:01 PM GMT
Got it in one J.R. Anyone thick enough to listen to Dessie or others , and not KNOW their colours deserves all they get...
Report callitasucit February 1, 2015 6:08 PM GMT
The above is true, but there are plenty of 'causal punters', maybe once a year race goers, or have the odd bet. They deserve better. Anyone that cant perform their job to a satisfactory level, deserves to be punished with the sack.

Say your at the races with your good wife WR, and she is waiting on the jackpot, or even a fiver win on something. The amount doesn't matter. Dessie calls her horse home first. Why should she not believe him? Its going on too often. He does not care either. Its not good enough, and something should be done.

Alas it wont.
Report workrider February 1, 2015 6:15 PM GMT
Callit , take it from me he WAS embarrassed today , I think lads on here cant wait for someone to make a mistake , see your point re the casual racegoer/punter ...I can assure you he DOES care about punters ...
Report J.R.Hartley February 1, 2015 6:20 PM GMT
Imagine Workrider's wife's delight when after Dessie calls her horse home second her good husband points out to her

that dessie is talking shyte and she is fact a winner....adds to the enjoyment imo....Laugh

Seriously though it is the most unimportant job in racing.
Report paulie wallnuts February 2, 2015 1:01 PM GMT
One of the most important jobs in the game.....of that there is little doubt....maybe Scahill has served his time.....but I must say I like him.....hes not a know all like a lot of the prixx that commentate these days.....people like Mark Johnson....and even worse Richard Puke......
Id say commentating is a much more difficult job than being clerk of the scales......one job requires years of experience and study......the other requires being able to count to 14....and being able to read satisfactorily.....
Had to laugh when I read where some imbecile described the fella in Punchestown as being a top clerk of the scales.....what in gods name differentiates between a good and a bad clerk of the scales.....

IF Memory serves me Channel 4 ran a  commentating Competition about a decade ago, would be  Commentators lined up ;both men and women , and if you think Scahell was bad Cry,.. anyway Dessie has had better days then the commentary in question, commentating on a 22 runner H/cap requires great skill,...but try telling that to the lad who has lost a Bundle Of Money over a  Commentators mistake.Blush
Report frank60 February 2, 2015 4:24 PM GMT
For the record,,,,Des Scahill is a broadcaster. He did his first commentary for RTÉ Radio at the Leopardstown Chase Day in 1973 when he was filling in for Micheal O'Hehir, who was then the manager of Leopardstown Racecourse. For almost thirty years, Des Scahill commentated on horse racing for RTÉ Radio. He was also greyhound-racing commentator for RTÉ Television.

He will forever be associated with Dawn Run winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1986. His race commentary is one of the most famous in all Irish sporting history.

Throughout this career, he covered racing from around the world, and in 2000 he commentated on the Dubai World Cup for the BBC. Scahill continued to cover racing as the Irish Race Course commentator.
Report Distant View February 2, 2015 4:51 PM GMT
Peter O'Sullivan is the commentary that I would remember from 1986 and I just listened to Schaill there for what must be the second time ever.

If he was commentating exclusively for radio in that race then it is very average, but I assume it must have been on RTE as well?
Report frank60 February 2, 2015 5:07 PM GMT
Peter O'Sullivan born in Kenmare co cork was truly a great Commentator D.V.  but i belive Dessie did the radio commentary, O.K Dessie WAS NO Peter  O Sullivan but O Sullivan never had to worry about betting in running.

I never thought of that Frank , a very good point , I think Simon Holes made a simular blunder awhile back at Sandown I think it was , came on the main forum and apoligised ..He get plenty of flak of the lads though...Dessie is not the only one making mistakes...
Report paulie wallnuts February 2, 2015 5:22 PM GMT
Commentators like Scahill and O Sullivan were always accurate and inoffensive....
The modern day commentator wants to be the star of the show.....with their inserts which only annoy people.....
You have Johnson with any number of annoying habits....."over the mound" "top of rose hill" "one last lunge"  "spring heeled" "mares in the gates"......the list is endless.....
Machin with his annoying habit of refusing to call jockeys by their Christian names.....plus the trademark attempt at a pun on every winner......
And then you have Pugh who has to show the public his so called encyclopedial knowledge of the game at every attempt......and also the attempt to link every horse with point to point racing.....no matter how tenuous the connection maybe.....
Report frank60 February 2, 2015 5:23 PM GMT

We all know he makes mistakes so its surprising that any would trust his commentary for betting.

Those OHehirs are the best commentators and never seem to make a mistake.

agreed, IR players should be aware that commentators make ricks - but the points above about a one a year racegoer getting a bad experience carry weight here. He is not good enough.
