The shops most local to me stay open to 9.30 pm most evenings , staff not allowed to leave until 9.45 . The only reason for staying open is the fact that FOBT's are allowed in the north . Staff reckon they are running an amusement arcade essentially these days .

I have always thought it would be interesting to do an experiment with a group of 'virtual racing punters'.

I am rarely in a bookie shop for any extended period of time, but what strikes me is the punters penchant for backing favourites, especially in poorer races. I visit Clonmel from time to time, and in a decent racing pub there, there are a large number of 'punters' who seem to back a horse simply because its favourite.

Giving them access to all known form etc, but not giving the any projected tissue, I would love to see the reaction to the following...

Say Horse A was a 6-4 shot, and a warm fav, but was put up at 25-1 in the bookies.
Horse B was a 25-1 shot, and in reality no value at that, but was put in at 6-4 fav.

Rather than absolutely no one backing the 25-1 shot at 6-4, I reckon quite a few would back it in the same way as if he was the rightful 6-4 shot...just because it was fav. Likewise less would back the 6-4 shot at 25-1, than would at 6-4!!

Obviously not every bookie shop punter can be tarred with this brush, but quite a few can, and these are the punters being targeted by the extended opening hours, the ones betting on virtual racing, or racing from Timbucktoo that they have absolutely no idea about. They would be better off wiping their arse with their cash.

An amusement arcade I would imagine gives a better percentage chance of success.

intresting what callit has to say.hes right as regards backing the 6/4 shots etc.i infrequently visit them either.but anytime i do there a hard core of about 5/5 heads in both of the pp shops in ennis.i observed two guys of these  one day and they were backing EVERY favourite on the virtual, bags and horses.the gold cup is the same value to them as a an a10 dog race at romford..i reckon the thrill of seeing your pick winning every third time approx is what they are addicted to.they were only wagering 5/10 euro but over the day it could amount to a very tidy sum?..they will really be thrilled with the 9pm finish i reckon..

A good weeks ago i was in PP and a Virual race had just ended;some punter  with a few jars on him went into a 4 letter tirade about the jockey on the 2nd horse; it made for a good laugh with some of the heads in the shop.

That reminds me of the media mantra  frank , if you keep printing the stuff eventually people will believe it's the truth .

I was in the bookies tonight and, having lost all my money I lost my rag and threw a fistful of betting slips across the shop in anger.

"Hey! What in hell's name do you think you're doing?" Screamed the manager from the counter, "Would you behave like that in your own house?"

I couldn't help but crack up with laughter, I'm in the bookies at 9.00 pm on a cold winter night betting on low grade greyhounds and virtual horse racing and the silly **** still thinks that I have a house.Grin

Can't believe they've got away with this late opening legislation. I didn't even know it was on the cards. Where are the dissenting voices in this country?
