Champagne West at 15-8 w/o Ptit Zig looks a cracking bet today. Not overly impressive the last day, but still ultimately a comfortable winner. If he jumps with the aplomb he did on debut I think he will beat the fav. 15-8 to beat the rest seems very good.

Our Father looks overpriced in 12.45 Chelt. Probably too much weight been given to the 'best first time out' view. His first effort this year was a cracker, and probably should have won, but for a brain dead ride. He would be higher in the hcp, and a lot shorter in the market if he had of.

Report callitasucit January 1, 2015 2:01 PM GMT
Cheers Norn. It did shape like a decent race. Considering how Champagne jumped I am surprised he was beaten. He was a bit free, and certainly was in front too soon, but I don't think either really affected the result, and as such great credit has to go the winner.
Report callitasucit January 1, 2015 2:10 PM GMT
What price would Marito be in 2.15 Tramore if WPM still trained? A hell of a lot shorter is my guess. It cant be ignored that that outfit chose to offload such a seemingly decent type, and maybe there was an issue. But his recent point win, helps alleviate them fears, to some extent at least. If at his best, this should be his for the taking.

Disappointing finishing effort from Vanituex. Not speedy enough for 2m, and seemed short of stamina today. A fine big sort, I would make his next race the Arkle. If he wins, then its a great result, if not, well he is still a novice for next year.

Eye catching run from Cole Harden, staying on very well at the death. In a World Hurdle where so many have doubts about them, 25-1 e.w looks a worthy investment to me. Along with Monksland, they look the value at the moment.

He could be one of those horses that falls between two stools , no real distance and lacking stamina ,now that would be a worry ,not sure the Arkle would be to his liking either , if he could jump fences that is..Maybe he'd be better off at  grade 2  tracks...

Who would have guessed that NJH's horses aren't firing on all cylinders?Talk about stating the bleeding obvious!Crazy

Remember the time you came on crying after gettin cleaned chasing the long odds on shot in the American racing?

Another classic was when you apologised on behalf of Irish racing on the HR forum for AOB not having them fit on seasonal debut?

Should you really be on here,is there not a correlation?

As Borneo said we don't want to see you fall again.

Backed Marito today, as I've always liked the horse and he apparently spat of Oscar Barton in a point.

I heard they were trying to get him qualified for Hunter Chases, what is the procedure for this. he is still a young horse and is it right that the likes oh him are let in?

Also, anyone have any news on Mossie Joe?

Thanks.
Report paulie wallnuts January 1, 2015 7:34 PM GMT
Neill D....id say Marito is not qualified for any hunters chase after running today......
Mossey Joe pulled up in Balinaboola lately......I assume one of his well publicised many problems after coming to light.....looks like the only one who wasn't aware of these.....was Barry.....talk about setting fire to 200k.....its a sin really.....people starving and all that.....
Report pa lapsy January 1, 2015 7:36 PM GMT
ATR showed Mossey's Ballinaboola point about a month ago Neill,it was after a bit of a lay-off but i was very underwhelmed,i was very surprised at how quickly he totally emptied.
Maybe there was a reason but personally be very slow to back him after that and has to show better.
Report TellTheKing January 1, 2015 7:42 PM GMT
Neill D Marito wouldn't qualify for the Foxhunters because his win in Tramore least year is within two seasons.  Not sure of the exact figures but I think you cannot win a race worth more than 25k in the two seasons previous to the Foxhunters.

Mossey Joe ran a sticker in Ballinaboola recently. He was entered up the North over Christmas but didn't run. I 'd say the best thing for the horse would be to be quietly retired but Barry will probably ride him in a charity race knowing him.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 7:43 PM GMT
Thanks to Paulie and Pa, I hadn't heard that. Frightening amount of money that was given the whole package. 200k to run a horse in Huner Chases is against the spirit of Hunters anyway so some would say it serves them right.

McBratney said on ATR site that Marito could still improve from today and had earlier said in a local paper that a greaded race in Thurles early this year would be his main target. He might be worth a bet in that. He might have blown up a little bit today, I thought.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 7:45 PM GMT
Thanks very much TellTheKing.

Talent wise, Mossie was some horse, but you'd nearly say he did well to do what he has given all the issues. That win at Stratford in 2013 is the best performance that race will ever see I'd say.
Report TellTheKing January 1, 2015 7:52 PM GMT
He's a machine at his best but he's a horse fraught with problems. He's also done the rounds in yards (obviously Bolger excluded) that wouldn't know how to train a right horse which has been most unfortunate.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 8:00 PM GMT
You'd wonder if he'd been with a Mullins, Elliot or Martin what might have been alright. I remember Mullins admiring him in an interview after he hacked up in a novice hurdle at Cork, I think. He was worth 200k then!!

Report neill d January 1, 2015 8:55 PM GMT
He can train a bit, though. Didn't manage to keep Flemenstar or Bog Warrior fully right, Bogs was on the track, but the more you think of it, keeping them fit is nearly half of it.

I'd say Martin will win Grade 1s regularly at some point in the future, the syndicates are probably on the way back and he seems a popular kind of fella.
Report CheltenhamRoar January 1, 2015 8:58 PM GMT
The only way he'll be training Grade 1 winners is if Giggy continue to give him a slick of their cake,
And even then that's not guaranteed as has already been proven,Give me the likes of Jessie and HDB over Martin every day of the week.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 9:16 PM GMT
I think he is a more talented trainer than either of those, for all Harrington has an astonishing CV. De Bromhead is a good sort of trainer and has a fine CV as well, but I thought they'd be further along the line than they are by now. Don't think the price means that much with a Harrington horse, nothing wrong with that but it isn't something I like to see in a trainer.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 9:18 PM GMT
Think Martin could be champion trainer in the right circumstances, I'd never say that about Harrington or DeBromhead. Long-term, I could see him dividing the Giggy horses with Elliot.
Report CheltenhamRoar January 1, 2015 9:24 PM GMT
Amazed how you can hold him in such high regard neill,Surely it's not difficult running horses down the field (particularly in ireland) to get them winning handicaps further down the ling with 20 pounds in hand,Jessie is a top class trainer and has proved this both on the flat and over jumps,Henry has shown what he can do when given the ammo.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 9:30 PM GMT
Can see where you're coming from, but I just get the sense that the guy can really train. He hasn't won anywhere near what Harrington and DeBromhead have, but he might be about to make the step up in the next couple of years I feel.

Get the sense he always knows exactly what he has, marking time for a real good one and we'll see then I guess.
Report CheltenhamRoar January 1, 2015 9:41 PM GMT
Yeah i get where your coming from neill,No doubt a very shrewd man and knows exactly what he has and places his horses very well,More of a syndicate trainer than a G1 trainer though i feel,if u had to pick one,Martin or Byrnes??
Report pa lapsy January 1, 2015 9:44 PM GMT
Think Willie(at this time) is getting the best results for Giggy(true with whoever he trains for i suppose) Neill, not sure how many he has but don't think it is too many.Don Poli and Valseur Lido are two cracking horses,Valerian Bridge possibly, most trainers would love Milsean though could be a lesser light, todays runner As de Ferbet might be an argument for not getting results for them but one of the very few i can think of,think MOL would obviously want him but surely down the road some conflict could arise in regards going for a particular race with another Mullins inmate.
Report CheltenhamRoar January 1, 2015 9:47 PM GMT
i dont think MOL would ever entertain Martin messing around with any of his horses,But i could be wrong.
Report neill d January 1, 2015 9:54 PM GMT
Chelts, Byrnes by a neck because of where he is doing it from, but I think if one of them is ever going to be 'the guy', it will be Martin.

The Mullins thing is crazy in ways Pa, because it must be conflicts of interest left right and centre, but still as you say, he outperforms the other trainers. he can scare em off at times, but there was nobody ducking Don Poli and he still went and won.

I think the other Irish NH trainers, should take it as a bit of an insult to be honest, that owners like the Un De Sceaux crew wouldn't look in one of their directions.

Just on Martin again, has he sold the yard yet and is the Curragh move going ahead anyway?
Report pa lapsy January 1, 2015 10:11 PM GMT
Urticaire,Master of Verse,Measureofmydreams and Aniflet would be a few more "underachievers" maybe WPM could only do what he can with them.
Hard to measure up Martin/Byrnes with Mullins, different type as handicappers mostly with the two though their brilliance(Byrnes with that horse that won the Ces(?) and Martin switching a host between both codes with equally stunning results, think they(particulary Martin) would have little bother if their stable had more graded horses.
No idea about TM's move.
