The Paddy Power Chase entries are out today, and I'm disappointed to see Arthur Moore's Talbot Road doesn't have an entry. He has no entries at all at the moment so I presume he's on the easy list. However, there's good news too because there's a horse at 20/1 who jumps off the page as being the type to be subject to a huge gamble.
Last year I was part of the plunge on Cause Of Causes who was beaten by a head by Rockaboya. He's entered again but is 12 lbs higher in the weights now and looks to face a stiff task. In the same ownership is a horse who went off 4/1 fav for the Thyestes the last time he ran over fences. He was backed from 10/1 down on the day but fell early on. He has had two hurdles runs since and is entered in a hurdle at Clonmel this week too. That should put THE WESTENER BOY spot on for Leopardstown.
The Westener Boy is quite a lightly raced individual, with only 10 runs under rules. The first of these was a 20 length beating of Irish Thistle in a Fairyhouse bumper. Irish Thistle is now a Grade 2 placed chaser, rated 142 (The Westener Boy is rated 130 over fences).
Beaten in a maiden hurdle at odds of 4/9, The Westener Boy then had a couple of 'held up, stayed on' sort of runs over fences, before beating Grade 1 winning hurdler Marasonnien by 25 lengths over three miles at Navan.
He then went to Leopardstown's Christmas meeting for the Grade 1 novice chase over three miles but was pulled u after a bad mistake at the fourth last cost him any chance. Then came the Thyestes plunge and since then I'm sure they've been waiting to aim him at a big handicap, protecting his mark by staying over hurdles.
There is plenty of evidence that suggests The Westener Boy is a graded quality animal at the very least. His trainer Colm Murphy is no stranger to handicap success either, Glam Gerry and Shariyan are two examples of success at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting by horses who were effectively chucked in at the weights. He got Champion Hurdle winner Brave Inca into a handicap hurdle off a mark of 95.
My guess is that The Westener Boy is far superior to his mark of 130. He's in off 10-02 at the moment and with McManus having a number of horses near the top of the weights, I can't see him carrying any more than 10-07.
Think i was on Cause of Causes as well, very tough, wide open looking race looking at the entries and the sponsors book at not far off 300% i,ll certainly be waiting. Remember hearing Tyner doing the town when he won it in '01 with I Can Imagine, very unlikely some of his will get in this year but Definite Article was very well backed in it last year, thought he was going well til went 6 out and that was just a bit too early to say whether he would have been involved but feel as if he would. Finished 2nd next time in a 60k Leopardstown handicap where interestingly had Talbot Road about 6L behind. Priced as one of the outsiders think he has a chance off just 2 lb higher than last year. like to see him show a bit better than he has so far this season, has an entry on Sunday and will be watching that.

Some sound reasoning to back The Westener Boy Slabster, but as Pa says i will be waiting until in my case early Christmas week to see how the market in heading, ty

Just looked at the replay there(3.00P) Catchme, funny race,i'd like to think Daring article was having a quiet one,the betting(8-14/1) would suggest he was,but honestly not sure. Bizarre race by Foxrock, was in a great position, lost it and ran on full of running when it was all over, certainly would be on a shortlist. Know Call Rog didn't jump the last few great, still thought it was another M W masterclass and they will strike soon with him.

The lack of a run or even some news has made me wonder whether The Westener Boy will actually run but I'm glad to see he's still entered after the latest forfeit stage.

Not good news this morning with him, still may run but Murphy was negative in saying he'd have prefer to got a run into him after he suffered a setback.

very good opening post slabster (as usual, I'm weeks late to the party). next time we run one of our handicap analyses you should participate. best thing about it is bringing together people with a good understanding of the challenge involved.

Saw that earlier Pa, a pity, makes you wonder even if he does run will he be fully wound or just blowing away the cobwebs for the Thyestes.
Thanks RA, would be happy to get involved.

Just off topic but in the Ryan Air Hurdle, Hurricane Fly will be taking on Jezki. There are 9 entries at the moment in a race that will is sure to cut up. So anyone looking for a bit of each way value I recommend King of the Picts at 100/1. He has no chance of competing with the top two but has every chance of finishing third in a race where, in my opinion, he has as good a chance as any of the others of finishing third. This could turn into a 4 or 5 horse race and I would be fairly confident that King of the Picts will line up on the day.
