Reading today's   R/Post and by God did I have a laugh ..They are blaming everyone bar themselves ...Everyone knows young people have lost interest in racing , many find the jargon alone difficult ...The youth of today want instant gratification , no long hours burning the oil trying to find out if x is off today etc , studying the form is a thing of the past with most punters , videos the new form book in many cases ...Football would be gaining rapidly on racing for a share of the market ...So the fact that you can enter one of their shops and get wall to wall coverage of cartoon racing , cartoon football , cartoon motor racing etc ..Oh I almost forgot , the FOBTS , every shop in the UK has at least four of these ..Lets try and place a bet with these giants of the industry .Member of staff asks you to hold on a moment , ringing of phone  ..Excuse me but can I speak to a trader please , I have a punter here wishing to have £20 e/w on a 7/1 , oh sorry to have disturbed you of course I'll explain to him its a trading decision..I'm really sorry to have to inform you I am unable to take that bet , its a trading decision ..Good bye...We've all experienced that at one time or another , have we not ...So with all those cartoons fobts etc , how would a punter have any money left in the first place...Get your house in order before crying foul ...

There a joke of a outfit. Eight horse race in Ireland not long ago. Friday evening meeting. They bet 11/8 the jolly ,13/8 2nd fav, the third in was 9/4. Yes 9 to 4 . !!!!! Then 5/1, 11/2 13/2 8/1 and 12s the rag which was 44 on the machine. They are complete rip off merchants. They know the folk out for a few pints on a Friday wouldn't care what price they back there selection at and are probably blissfully unaware that they are being ripped off. I'd encourage anyone and everyone to boycott these robbers shops and hopefully in the long run they'll play fairer?

joevalue, if people aren't selective about getting the best price for their selection, that's not the bookies problem.

ladcrooks are the worst so called bookies...I opened a account with them..and placed 4 bets in 2 days..3 won..the best price 7/2...I then placed £80 win on a 9/4..that won.....over the next few days..i lost a few bob...(300)..I got a tip and placed 150 win @4/1..the bet was refused..i was told I could have 16.75..@4/1..?..ive never placed a bet since..on course or net...

These 4 opening posts have it in ONE ( if that stands up language wise ) . Cannot figure out why such a big outfit seem to be so badly run .  They have plenty of resources , but fewer and fewer punters from what I see the odd time I go into their offices locally ( 90% of which used to be vibrant and busy when under previous ownerships ) .

Dont think I would be buying shares .

No surprise to hear this news.
Ladbrokes' offices are as dreary and decrepit as their prices.
Only reasons I will ever enter one are
1)To facilitate bladder/bowel requirements
2)To escape a bout of inclement weather
3)To hide from a machete-wielding maniac in the street.

All the posts here are accurate but they just prove why Ladbrooks are the best.

They don't want Vubiant in their shops, they don't want to deal with the likes of Pa Lapsy,The Gotchee or Snap Crackle and Pop,they want their shops to be dole recycling offices.
They want the lads who bet on every race, cartoon as well, they want the women betting on lottery numbers, they want the punter who takes their recommended bet,put forward as value but when worked out is less than the actual odds,in short they want the problem gambler.

They want to make money and they want no risk.

They have a big racecourse operation in Ireland due to their takeover of Chronicle, they are the polar opposite to their shop operation.
If you see them go after a horse don't back him, they have some marked card, this is partly traditional and partly due to their new staff.
They take a bet on course although how long this will last will depend on profitability.
I went to Galway Friday and Saturday, they had two betting shops, two of the best stalls in the place along with four other stalls,it was some operation.

My guess is they have given their Irish operation a free hand for a year or so,if its profitable fair enough if not they will just cut and run.

You cannot be serious wildman?

Ladbrokes are a shambles and their results and share price for the past number of years prove it.

The Irish operation has been a money pit since it was first set up and that is leaving aside the crazy deal for the Eastwood shops.

Their online operation is possibly the worst of any major bookmaker and how Richard Glynn has remained in this role for the length he has, is one of the great mysteries of the past few years.

On course presence at a few race meetings makes absolutely no difference to their overall business model.

William Hill has turned things around and seems to be charging forward, but these obsolete dinosaurs have to radically change things if they are not going to continue to this spectacular downturn.

Don't underestimate Ladbrooks.

If punters like a bookmaker its more than likely he is no good in the profit department.

They now control the purple and are using that to control SPs.
By:

When: 14 Aug 14 10:41
The "purple" with regards horse racing is as far as i know for the want of a better word "controlled"(maybe operated might be better but are responsible for the equality to BF prices late on) mostly by UK independent books, thats my belief anyway and at this point LADS are standing back.
It was a very poor half year report and only for the World Cup would have been quite shocking,no tears for them myself, their prices are brutal and maybe the tail is wagging the dog.Not generally good times for shops as a combination of overheads, recsession(don't believe punters bet more in one nowadays though historically have) and savvy and more tech aware punters.

Their case of Cin Cin running tonight is so typical of them, horse opened up a gen 11/4(lads 9/4),has now being cut to a gen 2/1(lads 13/8), will run out of mugs eventually, surely nothing was laid at 9/4 and now trying 13/8? The worlds biggest bookmakers, haha.
Surely that stupid ad must be costing them an absolute fortune.

They don't want you near their offices Pa

They don't want to know about morning prices..

They want the lad who has a score on Shane Long to score the first goal and Southampton to win 4 . 1.
They want the lad who goes from virtual to dogs to horses a bet every ten minutes.
They want the problem gambler.

I don't like them,I don't bet in their shops although I do bet with them on course betimes.
By:
Tolmi
When: 14 Aug 14 11:22
Don't underestimate Ladbrokes is a statement that could only come from someone of your generation wildman. They were without a shadow of a doubt the best run bookmakers in the pre PP era but in common with many leading businesses of that era failed to appreciate the sea change that techology would bring to all types of business.Looking at their profitability in comparision with their peers shows how much the have fallen.

Their shop purchasing department must have been the most incompetent of any of the big bookmakers highlighted by their spending of over £2m per shop to buy Eastwoods in 2008.While it is hard from the figures to make out exactly how much their NI operation makes it would appear that £50k per shop is a reasonable guess. Some return on €2m!!They look as if their 200+ shops down south are losing turnover steadily and are lossmaking.
They might have had decent judges working for them in the past but they have run their business terribly.
By:

When: 14 Aug 14 11:26
They had a nice cozy set up in the UK,themselves Hills and Corals could basically do what they wanted as they had a near monopoly of the high st. Thought Ireland would be the same but got a bit of a land with its competitiveness and concessions that were being offered and had no choice but to follow or die.
Most gamblers(myself included) have very likely gone through a stage of we will call it loosely "problem gambling", you do it and most learn their lesson and cop on,no game but a war, they want to shaft you. Any gambler wants to think he can win but with this company the odds are so stacked against you it is impossible. Different the recreational gambler with a score on the match, they wouldn't keep the doors open(only help), the problem gambler and the fella that bets every few minutes surely should realise their money may last a bit longer in another establishment.

Tolmi , one of their ex Eastwood shops I know well probably does not TURNOVER 50k a year , never mind make any profit .  I tried to get into that shop the other day but there was no access at 2.00 pm weekday.  Presumably the staff ( one normally or 2 occasionally) had gone out to get their hair done and the security entry control was disabled .

Or someone had had £50 on a horse and they were off to lay it off .

Their prices for horse racing in their shops ( I dont look up online , I am barred ) is nearly always the lowest , as wildman says they are only in it for mug punter pick up and numpty FOBT players . Or people who bet on the clolour of the refs underpants ( a la PP ) .
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 14 Aug 14 12:41
I used be solely a racecourse punter so their racecourse activities are of interest to me.

Their problem in Ireland is the illegality of their beloved FOBTs and have no doubt they are using all their political clout to get that law changed.

Tolmi is probably right in that I misspelt their name twice on this thread and am probably behind the times.

Mind you their presence in Galway seemed to me like a statement of intent.

Jonathan  Mullins piece today is rather interesting , He says the implications for punters and racing is huge , really , here's a simple example ..If I go shopping and notice that the shop next door is giving me much better value the one I've BEEN SPENDING MY MONEY IN , IS IT NOT LOGICAL THAT I SHOULD SPEND MY MONEY IN THE SHOP THAT GIVES ME THE BETTER VALUE ...Simple really Badbrooks have been mugging punters for years , now they are starting to reap the rewards of their actions...In fact it just might be a blessing in disguise if ALL bookmakers pulled out , then the TOTE will HAVE to step up to the plate , and maybe just maybe Racing will benefit for a change , not the SHAREHOLDERS...

I went into another of their shops about a year ago , one of their "senior" guys whom I know well was hooked up / miked up , I thought he was indulging his interest in something other than gambling .
However after a minute or so hanging around I discovered he was part of the "trading "operation in that he was monitoring bets from all over UK .

Some laugh that , my grandchildren know more about horses etc than he does , and the eldest of them is 15 !

Actually wildman I wasn't referring to your spelling at all, I was merely thinking that only a person from your generation could still think of them as being in any way the shrewd operators they were up to about 15 years ago.

There is no doubt that they did base their valuation of southern shops on the potential profits they could make should the FOBTs become legal. They seem to have based their model on increasing margin at all costs and as such have alienated so many customers that their turnover has collapsed.

As for the benefits of a Tote monopoly..from a punter perspective god forbid.I am not one for making rash predictions about the future but that will not happen in my lifetime.

I would also stake my life on there being no ex Eastwoods shop still trading turning over 50k a year.I stand by my earlier ballpark figures as to their average profitability.

advice please!! friend of mine has put a bet on..on the net..he knows its a error as the price is too big..but he places the bet...its accepted..and as of 2.15..is still accepted..if the horse wins..what rights do you have if the bookie refuses to pay out on the price the bet was struck at?

Your posts on the Lads thread again elucidate to the extent of your archaic and discombobulated views. I shall excuse your lack of awareness of mobile applications and web interfaces because I know you're a proud Luddite but I did think that you would be capable of reading a balance sheet.

For the first half of 2014 Lads earned an operating profit of €56 million from revenue of €577 million compared to WH's €176 million from €805 million revenue. Over €50 million of lad's operating profit is still derived from UK betting shops with digital operating profit contributing a meager €3m compared to a digital operating profit for WH of €81 million.

You again highlight your lack of awareness and frankly obsolescent views by proclaiming their Irish on course activities are salient to the overall context.
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 14 Aug 14 14:42
They are salient to me.

Your going on one year and are writing of Ladbrokes, that's a mistake.

They may be doing a William Hill and are playing catch up but I wouldn't bet against them.

Most should know my views on the present Gaza situation so my next statement should not be taken up wrong, there is another global aspect to Ladbrokes which will mean it will be there long after we are.
By:

A typical strategy from you,if incapable of cohesively debating the core issues of a topic, never admit to being wrong but divert on to alternative tangents. It's far from a one year view but frankly I am not going to waste my time because your views on this topic are laughable and prehistoric.
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 14 Aug 14 15:02
Your stilted mind can't see beyond a balance sheet, the topic is about Ladbrokes in general, the way they treat their customers.

I made general points about not wanting shrewd customers, their approach to problem gamblers is bring them on.

You think like an accountant, write like one and bet like one,you have no soul no feel for racing no gra for racing and despite all this you are probably the worst racing tipster on here, odds on shot after odds on shot get beat even yesterday you were on about Gone Viral being over bet and the percentages Ladbrokes were betting to,a complete inability to make a decision.

You will probably read yet another book on bookmaking this time and offer your services to Ladbrokes but I think they will survive without you.
By:
dj876
When: 14 Aug 14 15:16
Again a diversion from the core issues of the topic because your opinion of ladbrokes's shrewd strategical plan is laughable, name a bookmaker that doesn't have the same approach to shrewd and problem gamblers?. A novice teen punter could tell you that lads have being failing for years because of their lack of a cohesive digital platform. Oncourse Irish activities are irrelevant to the context of their performance.

I won't even start to have a discussion on value with you but if you think backing into 138% books on a horse that every single punter saw as an extremely unlucky loser is a long term winning strategy, then you are more naive than I originally thought but I shouldn't be surprised since you proclaim an all in strategy as a staking plan. I  think you should have a closer inspection of your own posts, you recently put up three lays on one thread that was approximately a 1/20 shot and boasted that there was a living to be made of laying Mcllroy.
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 14 Aug 14 15:28
There is a living to be made backing my lays alright.

You seem to think you can't revise your opinion,McIlroy traded short in tournament after tournament after his first round and lost, his putting was suspect but somehow he turned it around,I stated he was no longer a lay and whilst I didnt back him after Hoylake I didn't lay him.

You are mentally to betting what Padraig Harrington is to golf.

Your stilted mind comes in here again as you cannot move beyond your narrow figures based parameters.
Their on course operation is relevant to anyone here who goes racing, you might not be interested but you cannot veto such discussion on the basis its outside your field or there is no relevant book on the subject.

I'm not sticking up for anyone,i don't know what dj is on about,it's pure accountancy and way over my head and that is fair enough, the point Wildman makes in regards trying to be making a concerted effort on the course seems fairly valid to me,not sure is it a fraction enough overall but as it is a relatively newish development(scaling up oncourse) i,d take it onboard and certainly wouldn't be rubbishing the point like yourself is.

What exactly is 'ignorant' about my post?

Borneo's views are dated. Do you disagree?  Why is pointing this out 'ignorant'?

Tolmi makes a similar point when he says; Don't underestimate Ladbrokes is a statement that could only come from someone of your generation wildman. Is that also 'ignorant'?

DJ describes Borneo's views as 'archaic', 'frankly obsolescent' and that he  'lacks awareness'.  Is this also 'ignorant' iyo?

Cheerio Pa.

I fully agree with the view of all posters on this topic with the exception of one.  Therefore i saw no need to contribute towards what was an emerging consensus.

I got involved because as usual Borneo resorted to 'playing the man rather than the ball'.  DJ is one of the more informed and intelligent posters we have and it is not right to see him being hounded.  If Borneo was half as perceptive as you seem to think he is , he would choose to learn from DJ rather than blindly knocking him.

If you understod balance sheets then presumably you would be able to deduce that for yourself instead of sticking your tribal oar in.
