Lets be honest nepotism at its finest. He has just given El Salvador the most braindead ride I have seen. Horse probably would never have won but it stays 2m 5f ffs - the only way it could win was to make it a stamina test - yet he gives fav an easy lead.
He is useless and would not get a ride at another yard.

Nonsense. Joseph has well and truly proved himself a top class rider the last year or two. Great clock in his head from the front.
The way he had handled the pressure of the top since becoming no.1 rider for coolmore has been outstanding. |

i have to say the ride he gave john constable(I think that was it) was awful, drawn stall 2, got out and was 2nd from last all the way round?..was never going to do anything..but the yards other horse just got touched off?..it was a poor ride..wether deliberate I don't know?..but more should of been made of it imo?

Joseph is a superb horseman....a very intelligent rider and is ultra professional. Of course he makes mistakes as do they all but Joseph's are obviously highlighted a lot more. Does anyone think for one second that coolmore would employ a stable jockey simply because he was Aiden's son?....dear me. |

J R...So what did you make of his ride on John Constable the other night , as soon as the stalls opened I knew I'd done my money , an absolute shocker , in fact brutal is the word I'm looking for ..But wait , did they not have another runner in the race , silly me , of course they did , and pray tell where did that finish , gosh only beaten , now there's a surprise..Off golfing..

he was doing ok before them.albeit on a smaller scale..there must be awful pressure on him every year to produce g1 winners.not much fun id say...hes a very nice man and might want a break from it...i could be completely wrong.id say he got a lot more pleasure from winning the galway plate and ch hurdle than a lot of g1 he won..

I would say if that if it were not for family connections Joseph would not be considered for the Ballydoyle job. He is an adaquate rider without being top class and a very decent and articulate young man and a credit to himself and his parents. His weight must surely be giving him endless problems and I would not be surpised if things may change in the next 1-2 years that young Donnacha is starting out now.

I agree that it was nepotism that got joseph the job but his talent and big race temperment have meant he has kept onto the job fo so long. The pressure he was under when he got the job as AOB's son was immense and he has handled it superbly. Lots of top class riders have come and gone before him but he looks like he will last longer than all of them providing he keeps his weight in check.
I don't really take seriously the point that magnier and co are being held ransom to keep joseph as stable jockey. They are running a multi million pound business and I don't believe they would tolerate a person they thought was incompetent in such an important position under any circumstances. O Brien is a brilliant trainer but if he leaves, there will be someone to replace him just like there was somone to replace vincent before him. There's no doubt that he has given horses poor rides like on John Constable but the same can be said of every other jockey in the weigh room. I don't see the point in highlighting one good ride or one bad ride as a way of prove whether he is a good jockey or not but I would highlight kevin blakes recent article where he said the ride on tapestry was his ride of the week. More importantly however, he made the point that had ryan moore ridden the horse, the media and punters would have been falling over themselves in praise of him. |

Will somebody tell me why every time a jockey holds a horse up and gets beat...it's a bad ride?....99 times out of a hundred the horse isn't good enough as was the case with John Constable.......does anyone for one minute think he should have won on it?

I think John constable will be much better later in the season when there is a bit of an ease in the ground. Some Montjeus are like that.

I've watched the race tony....horse didn't travel early...more than likely due to the ground..was only a length off the second horse into the straight... didn't quicken.....finished a well beaten eighth.....

They all ride to orders or they don't work at all, A bad ride to a punter may be a perfect ride to the employer.

Frank, Flat fee is £115 & 10% of purse, Agent takes a small percentage of both.
Jump jockeys same percentage of purse but riding fee is £157. Give or take a few quid. |

Flat €146. NH €169. HRI deduct levies out of this fee
Jockey comes out with around 8%. |

that weekend could be the begining of the end for the kid joe.hes too 1 dimensional(even allowing for his age)all the greats have brains and know what to do as a race develops.and he will have to face it,how long can he do the weight?

He didn't do the weight. He was 1 lb over on Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes.

I would imagine "the lads" will be drip feeding him during his sleep so that they can give the job to ryan moore for next season and see a huge benefit.

Going through a bit of turmoil at the weekend,nobody could defend the Australia ride and he was among the gang caught out by Kingscote on Leading Light.
The overweight issue can't be let go on forever for the health of the lad himself and the stable. |
