I placed a football bet yesterday 500 @11/10 over 2.5 gls in Germany v Portugal game with an indo in Galway. The price was on a coupon and on the screen and member of staff checked it. Went in today to get paid and they offered me 4/6 as that was the price PP were going. Ridiculous carry on. Any advice is welcome
Coupon not relevant. When you say staff member "checked it" what do you mean ?
I would think with the level of stake/liabilty involved that the staff member would have had to phone head office to get permission to lay.

Sounds like you have very good case for payment at the verified screen odds then; certainly not a palpable error anyway. Very poor behaviour from bookie. Have you spoken with owner ?

You'll know more about it but sounds like he hasn't been in business very long and may not be for much longer. Difficult to assess your best option from here.

Playing a small bit of devils advocate here Clonashee, i totally agree that the price was on his screen, the bet was struck and that should have been the end of the story. However the 11/10 seems a bit high to me for that match, you made reference to pp being only 4/6 while that seems a tad short maybe looking over a broader spectrum of books say from yesterdays racing post would be able to say it was a wrong price? As said only being devils advocate, if the general price was 4/6 at the time of the bet(doubt it) think he is being very unfair to you to just offer that and being an independent has the scope to "split the difference" between the 11/10 and 4/6,hope you get a better outcome than that.

There was sustained support yesterday on over in that game. I placed the bet yesterday morning and it shortened throughout the day. He gets his prices from Byrnes who wouldn't be the best to update their markets but to offer me 4/6 when 10/11 was available elsewhere when I placed the bet was a bit much. His price was 11/10 which was clearly stated on screen so there shouldn't be an issue. The member of staff even verified it. It's like taking an early price on a horse and he paying you sp because he was best morning price on the horse and didn't want to pay it

Thats fair enough,,can easily understand that match getting backed and your example regarding taking a good morning price and getting a worse sp is very right,he has no case whatsoever in not giving you the 11/10 in good grace(very tight to give you 10/11 and the 4/6 is an insult) Only reason i put the query up as was unsure that 4/6 wasn,t around the general price and you clarified that with 10/11. Certainly would take it further(probably having to have a word with the da first). Stinks of sharp practice, hope you get settled properly.

He hasn't been in business that long and he most certainly doesn't like losing. He is definitely in the wrong business. He sprouted out the "a bookmaker doesn't legally have to pay out "line which should have sent out says it all. Sadly punters don't really have anywhere to go when situations like this arise

clonaslee, demand to speak to the da,..if no joy make a complaint to the ombudsman..they do have clout, but it takes time....if the bookie has sense he,ll pay up before he gets done!

Disgraceful behaviour. Is he laying his screen prices or Powers? It is not your fault that his price provider isn't up to date with changes.Your options are limited but you can object to the local Super about the renewal of his licence. The problem is that its a 12 month licence that is not due for renewal until Nov/Dec.
I would go in and tell him that you are going to object to the renewal of his licence as he is not a fit and proper person to hold a licence.Give him a chance to change his mind/reach a compromise and if he doesn't take a copy of your betting slip..collect the bet..write to the Super with the reason for your objection and a copy of the bet.Get a copy of yesterday's Post as well to prove that the price was available that morning.
The reason I say to collect the bet now is the possibility of a fly by night style operation closing with your money overnight.
I don't think the Ombudsman has any powers in this area.

Was the ticket circled or marked in some way by the cashier to acknowledge the price?
You say he gets the prices from Byrnes..not sure who they are...but could you go to them and ask them to check what the price was at the time involved. As much as I sympathise with you, without that, its hard to see what concrete proof you have to proceed.

Tolmis way is the way to go,take a copy f the betting slip, argue your case collect as much as you can and return the next day looking for the balance.
The fact that Clonaslee is a 100 percent in the right has to be relevant.

Thanks lads. I have the slip still and got a copy of it. Meeting the owner Saturday evening about the ordeal. I'm in the process of contacting the previous owner of the shop to get the contact number of the price providers and they should clear it up for me

I got in touch with the price provider who confirmed that the price was 11/10 when I placed the bet and the price was changed at 2.30 to 4/6. Two hours after I placed the bet. First they agreed to e mail this information to me and then after I was put on hold this request was declined.

This is the key point to put to the owner, the fact that you have already confirmed this with the odds provider.
Put the ball in his court; ask him to get written confirmation from the odds provider regarding the odds at the time.

Yes I know that I'm right. He was caught on a price and doesn't want to pay out. If I don't get a satisfactory outcome them all this info will be handy when it comes for him to renew his licence in Nov.

Yeah he was very helpful at first but when he came back after I was put on hold it was almost as if he was told not to comply with me. I got his name so hopefully it works out.

If you do collect at the 4/6 make sure you advise them that you will be pursuing them for the balance.Ask for a receipt for the amount paid out.The only reason I say to collect is that any bookmaker who treats customers like this is liable to renege on payment altogether and whatever about not getting the price not getting paid is far worse. From my experience bookmakers will often back down once they realise you are serious and have a case.
If the bookmaker is not affiliated to IBAS they are not obliged to got to them.
