.....or can someone please give me a different explanation as to why they are trading at 2.58 in a neutral venue against a far superior team??

The idiocy has taken awhile to kick in, but by Jesus they are making up for lost time!

Yeah what happened to the happy england going in with no pressure or expectations? Was envisaging a cheeky little back on them at 3.2 or above. 2.54 for a team with hart, jagielka and wellbeck in it is insane. Italy the value
Report workrider June 14, 2014 11:06 PM BST
Thought Sterling had given them the lead ...
Report gentlemanjohn June 14, 2014 11:09 PM BST
Looks very open and positive, over 2.5 is a big price
Report pa lapsy June 15, 2014 12:27 AM BST
^ good call, England probably deserve a draw.
Report callitasucit June 15, 2014 1:16 AM BST
WD Gentlemanjohn.

No lessons learnt......the gamble has begun on England to beat Uruguay. Currently 2.58, terrible price, but it will contract to about 2.4 before the off.

Thank God we're surrounded by water!!

welldone call, I backed Italy..as hart never rules my head over footy..and I hate most of the England team..just a shower of overpaid and overrated fools...but tbf thought they should of got a draw..?..i only had £20..only ever bet small on footy..but fair play mate..you called it..
Report callitasucit June 15, 2014 3:53 PM BST
England already down to 2.4 against Uruguay. Madness.
Report Ozymandius June 15, 2014 4:13 PM BST
not sure why its a surprise, they are always overbet.
Report callitasucit June 15, 2014 4:22 PM BST
I know, but it was very late patriotic money last night. 2.4 is already way too short, but its very early. Makes you wonder what price they will go to.
Report Ozymandius June 15, 2014 4:33 PM BST
I've seen England play worse in tournaments.

Didn't see Uruguay but they must have been truly awful.  It will help England that Uruguay will be forced to chase the game as they have to win it.  Conditions kinder in SP also.

Won't be backing England vs Uruguay but less dubious about their chances as I would have been pre-tournament.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 15, 2014 6:10 PM BST
Uruquay are one of the worst teams in it,they scraped in via a play off against Jordan.
They have a few big name players but no depth to their squad.

England should beat them and Costa Rica and qualify for the knockout stages, after that probably a defeat on penalties.
Report Ozymandius June 15, 2014 7:12 PM BST
Disagree about their squad; 4th in the last WC, won the last Copa America,  only team to give Brazil a game in last year's Confed Cup (losing 2-1 in semi final).

Not sure what happened to them versus Costa Rica.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 15, 2014 9:18 PM BST
They were comprehensively outplayed that's what happened.

The form you quote is three and four years old,the recent form is the qualifying and they scraped in in last place.

They are the sixth best team in South America.
Report callitasucit June 15, 2014 9:28 PM BST
England are nowhere near top 6 in Europe though.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 15, 2014 9:30 PM BST
Agreed but they are better than Uruquay.
Report callitasucit June 15, 2014 9:31 PM BST
I wouldn't be so sure, and certainly not to the extent the market suggests. And it will be one way traffic on that front between now and ko.
Report Ozymandius June 15, 2014 9:35 PM BST
It's by a large the same Uruguay squad from 3/4 years ago.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 15, 2014 9:36 PM BST
You are right about the market it is skewed.

That doesn't alter the fact that Uruquay are poor, liable to have a man sent off and likely to gamble on an unfit Suarez.

I think they have no chance against England and less against the Italians.
Report Ozymandius June 15, 2014 9:37 PM BST
everyone has a chance against Ingerlund!

Oxlade Chamberlain    Wilshire

Lallana   Sterling    Barkely

         Sturridge

I would fancy that forward selection to do over the Uruguay I saw the last day. It won't happen but it would be a good PR move for Woy to burn Gerard and Rooney now, it would also be good preparation for the Euros. Finally, I believe it is also their strongest available unit.  Not sure their midfield has the legs it had in previous tournaments and they were never the best footballers to begin with. One of the strikers could wind up carrying them.

The England that played Italy last night, I only really saw the first half properly, but I think they would handle the Uruguay that played Costa Rica. England are troubled by guile in midfield, something Uruguay don't possess.
Report pa lapsy June 15, 2014 9:58 PM BST
Saw most of the Uruguay/Costa match, thought the Uruguyans were brutal as well, England i thought despite trying hard looked very limited as well, not a match i,d like to have a bet in personally, maybe the England/Costa match think they could be a chance of an upset, the 4/9 on the English looks very very short, given the the Costa Ricans will certainly have something to play for and the possiblity of only pride for the English.
Report Ozymandius June 15, 2014 10:00 PM BST
that's the team i would pick neill, though with barkley central and sterling wide.

tho not sure if the Ox is intelligent enough or disciplined enuf to play in a mifdield 2.
Report neill d June 15, 2014 10:05 PM BST
That would be the chance with the Ox Ozy, but I'd say it could be his position long-term and maybe it could be time to get him to cultivate a bit of discipline. He is a well schooled footballer technically, can guys learn game intelligence? I dunno. You could compromise and put in Milner (who is a bit underrated but more of a hard-running winger) but if England took these next two relatively winnable games picking that adventurous a lineup, I sense Hodgson would be hailed as a national hero.
Report neill d June 15, 2014 10:07 PM BST
On reconsidering, Henderson didn't do much wrong from what I saw and is probably the best foil for the other 3 CM's. Wilshire would be the best to aid ball retention.
Report tony57 June 16, 2014 9:16 AM BST
england's defence is the problem imo..a poor goalie, the 2 central defenders are ltd, a right back who is a wing back..and baines who is great going forward but not so defending....Johnson ..is a fine player..but hes no defender..if you play him he has to be the right half of a 5 midfield?..rooney has to be dropped now..no excuses.he had his chance and now the manager MUST play the kids..gerrard stays, or is replaced by lampard to do the same job,imo..but when all said and done..we (England) are just not good enough but theres hope with the way we attack..and the young kids coming thru for the euros...

Johnny Giles says he worried about Uruaguay defenders giving away a penalty. I don't know what he is worried about......does he think Suarez is going to take it for them?!!

haha Callit. Thought Uruguay would be destroying them at this stage but going to take a few bob out, can see England at least trying hard to score.

Any thoughts on the ****/Greek match? Thought the Greeks were brutal against what is now looking a fairly decent Columbian team,Japs played well enough against the Ivory Coast, think the japs may do it but odds look bang on at 11/8ish for it.

England 4/9 v Costa Rica LaughLaugh
Report callitasucit June 24, 2014 1:46 PM BST
No heroin or cocaine taken, but England look a bet to me at evens.

Cant believe I wrote that!! Yes, they have been poor(was expected), and yes they are going to make a lot of changes, and yes they have been beaten by two teams that their opposition today have taken maximum points off.

But,....Englands B team is not far removed from what has been their first choice, it could actually be better. Costa will also ring the changes and I will be shocked if their strength is not weakened(substantially) because of it.

Costa beat a below par Uruguay who were without their one true star in Luis Suarez, and then beat a jaded Italy(who were one of all 4 teams to be beaten having played their previous game in Manaus)

England were beaten by both, but both Uruguay and Italy looked far superior teams against England, than when they faced Costa.

And finally, England are complete fu*in bottlers. There is no pressure today, a time when they will probably be at their best.
Report CheltenhamRoar June 24, 2014 2:12 PM BST
Sorry am i missing something here? Why the hell would Costa Rica ring the changes today?
Report callitasucit June 24, 2014 3:07 PM BST
They have 3 goals in hand of Italy, and 4 in hand of Uruguay on GD. So even a small loss will probably see them top group. If they plan on going much further in the tournament, they are going to need the 'squad' players at some stage. So best to give some of them a run out today, giving them game time and keeping everyone happy within the squad.
Report Toto82 June 24, 2014 4:58 PM BST
CR only 2 changes yet England 1.8. Hard to maintain discipline in terms of % of bank when presented with a lay opportunity like this!!
