I like George Baker's blog, which unlike many similar, he has shown commitment. George is no flat-cap north-of-England lad done well.
I visited Manton on a number of occasions when PCH was in his pomp and so GB's blog on the 24/April last was slightly sad:
"For Sale".....
An informal "For Sale" sign has hung over the Manton Estate since Robert Sangster passed away ten years ago. Without wishing to go into detail, it has always been clear that if the right bid came from the right quarters, the ownership of this fabulous place would change hands...
Now it is official. Strutt and Parker will handle a forthcoming sale on behalf of the Sangster family....
We love it here. And are very keen to stay. And so I would be lying if I pretended that the news, whilst not entirely unexpected, is not a little unsettling....
Some people find change very frightening. Some people struggle to contend with any matters that throw them out of their comfort zone. Some people struggle to address a situation, preferring instead to look the other way. Which never makes much sense....
Candida and I have "changed" so much in our married life. Professions. Houses. Locations. With change there comes opportunity. Short term instability can easily be converted into a long term positive. Who knows what will happen here ? Nobody can. Yet. Very early days.....
Several scenarios, one of which being the acquisition of Manton by one investor who leaves everything "as is". I heard the term "fridge it" for the first time yesterday. Meaning, I assume, that a buyer changes very little. Manton, without betraying any trade secrets that are not in the public domain, is a profitable entity.....
But, realistically, there is not much point in hypothesising for too long. Early days. Plenty of water under several bridges before the new owner, or owners, drive through the gates. And in the meantime we will work away in pursuit of another "best ever" season. And make the odd plan or two. Involving several Euromillions tickets, the Scoop 6, the Placepot at Ballinrobe and Trap 6 at Perry Barr....
Brighton this evening. Aqua Ardens back in action after a short break. A happier horse on turf. And Mrs Warren. Who needs to start showing that she has the appetite for this game....
Doncaster Breeze Up Sales today. After the expensive games played at Tattersalls, will there be better value at Donny ??
And sad to hear of the death in New York of Mark Shand. I never met him, but his book "Travels on my Elephant" is definitely in my top 10. Very sad....
