Hoping for a change in fortune this week.

In the last 4 weeks, Jonas Blixt has been second at 300-1, Luke Donald second 25-1, and Phil somehow managed to not even reward e.w support with a horror round on Sunday.

When taking first look at this on Sunday, 3 prices leapt off the page, Henrik Stenson at 28s, Luke Donald at 33s, and Zach Johnson 50s. All seemed to be very big, especially the latter two.

I missed the price on Luke and Zach, but 28s and 40s with 6 places still seemed more than fair.

Firstly, my main fancy Luke Donald, really looks cherry ripe for a win. Finally coming to grips with the changes he has been implementing, the experience under pressure in his unfortunate second to Matt Kuchar two weeks ago, will stand him in good stead going forward. He hit a couple of wayward drives, which ultimately cost him victory, but other than that he produced a top class round of golf, and he really does look to be approaching his best again. When at his peak, he is a very consistent performer. A fine track record here, its very hard to see him not contending.

Zach Johnson had a blistering start to the year, and his form had tapered off to an extent. Understandably so. But he produced quite an eye catching 4 rounds last week, and he comes to a venue where his tee to green excellence can propel him to a challenging position come Sunday. 50s was an insult, 40s perfectly backable.

Its only 5 months since Henrik Stenson looked unbeatable. He too has had changes to his game, mainly his bag. But he has been showing sporadic signs of his brilliant best in recent weeks, and where better to put it all together than at one of his favourite venues. He announced to the golfing world that he was going to be a force once again on this stage a year ago, and it doesn't take much imagination to see him going 4 better this year. Again its his tee to green game which can see him on the Sunday leaderboards.

Sergio Garcia could and probably should have won here a year ago. But his hatred of Tiger, general petulance, and lack of balls prevented him from doing so. Its no coincidence that it was in 2008, when Tiger was an absentee, that he took this title, and with Tiger once again a non runner, he may be the one to take principal advantage. His game has looked in superb order in the last 6 months, his mind seems in a better place, and if Kuchar can win so can Serg!!

One from left field is Roberto Castro. An opening 63 projected him into the limelight last year, a limelight he wasn't ready for. He went belly up with a 78 on Friday, but to his credit performed admirably over the weekend to finish inside the top 20. He showed definite signs of life last week, and will come here a confident man. 175-1 underestimates his chances, and with 6 places, it is definitely worth a tickle. As is the 11-2 for another top 20 finish.

1.2pt e.w Luke Donald 28-1
1.2pt e.w Sergio Garcia 25-1
1pt e.w Henrik Stenson 28-1
.7pt e.w Zach Johnson 40-1
.2pt e.w Roberto Castro 175-1
3pts Roberto Castro Top 20 11-2

Running Total +32.75

On a side note, bookies seem to be treating golf markets the same way as on course bookies do the Grand National market. Nothing drifts, and anyone that they take a few quid on is cut. I went into PP yesterday morning, had €120 e.w Luke at 28s. Before I left the shop, less than 5 minutes later, he had been cut to 25s. They were not cutting to fall into line with others, as Corals were actually going 33s at the time, I just preferred the extra place. Oddschecker is typically a sea of blue every Wednesday, but that seems to happening earlier and earlier now. For an event as big as The Players, surely they can accept a few grand on players before taking out the axe??

Best of Luck everyone

Another great week of sport to look forward to, here are my picks:

Luke Donald 22/1
The two lads have summed up Luke's chances very well above and there is not much I can add to it. Hopefully he can go one better for us than he did @ Harbour Town.

Jim Furyk 30/1
In excellent form in recent weeks highlighted by his fast finishing 2nd place last week. Furyk's neat and tidy game suits this course well and has finished 3rd and 4th here in the past.

Ian Poulter 66/1
Probably a player I back too often but everyone has one player like that. T20 @ Augusta showed his form might be about to turn the corner and 2nd place here in 2009 showed a liking for this course.

Freddie Jacobson 110/1
In decent form last few weeks withe top 30 finishes in his last six events. Also finished T10 here in 2010 and should put up a respectable showing.

John Senden 150/1
In good form last few weeks highlighted by 2nd career win @ Valspar championship. Has a reputation for playing well on the tougher courses and good form this year should ensure a strong showing.

good luck with your picks.

Sorry, also backed Ben Crane. Not a fan of the lad in general, but he consistently seems to find form from nowhere when he arrives at Sawgrass, and at 175-1, with 7 places, its worth taking the chance he again finds himself spurred on to a high finish here.

.2pt e.w Ben Crane

Have to go with Bubba , 40 on here . Different animal this year as evidenced by his consistency . Not sure how this course stacks up for lefties though , some of the "figures" people may know more about that .

A player who is performing better than his odds is Goosen , hanging around in a lot of tournaments recently without rattling the leaders , but we all know if he hits a putting streak he can go low .

Not a tournament for serious punting though , the 17th can throw wobbles into the best card . Just a few bob on for interest , its not titled the fifth Major for nothing .

Kaymer back to his best . Scoring very good all round even though greens are not as good as normal .

Traded out on Bubba ( and also on Kaymer ! too soon ) . Some punters caught a cold on the 1st round leader market , 2 grand on Henley at 1/4 , plus other smaller .  Didn't see Kaymers 63 coming in the afternoon .

Great viewing though .

Great round by Kaymer , nice guy as well. good luck with your bets Kelly.
Report callitasucit May 9, 2014 12:56 AM BST
Some big scores, from some big names. Kaymers round must be a candidate for round of the season so far.

Sergio is still right in it, Zach hanging in there after a colourful card, and Stenson can hopefully take advantage of an early tee time tomorrow.

But if Kaymer can keep his head, and obviously his form, this could be blown apart by tomorrow evening.

I rarely re load before the weekend, as things can look a lot different after 36 holes than 18, and discarded bets can suddenly look full of promise. And when I have players in contention, I generally don't bother. Also I cant remember the last time I have backed a day one leader after 18 holes, as quite often they have had the best of the conditions, and the field can compact by Friday evening.

But waiting until Saturday could mean this particular ship has sailed, and Kaymer looks a cracking bet at 6.8. Of the top 28 players, only 8 of those had afternoon tee times. For the German to produce a 63 was incredible. He gets out early tomorrow, seems very much at ease with his game, and wont shirk a challenge. Yes it has been awhile since he hit the lollipop first, but he has bottle aplenty.

It can be hard to back up such a great round, but I would be surprised if the former world number one doesn't knock in a 69 or better tomorrow. Given most of the chasers, and big names, in behind are out in the afternoon, and that only 8 afternoon starters today shot 69 or better, its not hard at all to envisage the German having a 4 shot lead or more by cut time.

So I'm getting on before this Bismarck leaves the port.

4pts win Martin Kaymer 6.8

Thats the great thing about the exchanges , patches , there will nearly always be people on either side prepared to take a stance . The bookies used to be like that , but they are all ruled by bean counters nowadays .

While I backed (only) 3 players --Watson ( mainly) , Goosen  and Kaymer for a small interest , didn't see Martin springing a 63 . Interesting to see if he can keep up the gallop .

Not won since 2010 ffs

Hope he has two early birdies so that we can lay the man ! (Too many great players up his behind with two rounds still to go in what is 'birdie heaven').

I certainly wouldn't be laying him Catch Me.

He may not have won since 2010, but if you are talking about great players, the only legitimate candidate on the leaderboard is Kaymer.

Within 6 shots, we have:
Spieth. I am a massive fan, and he will be great, he will win majors, and he will be world number one. 'Will' is the important word here.
Henley. A good player, and sometimes great putter. When his career is over, I doubt he will be looked back on as one of the greats of the game.
Furyk. Thoroughly admirable player, who has won more than his talent would suggest, but no major, no world number one. Great??
Westwood. A bigger choker than Jimmy White on the big stage. This is a big stage.
Rose. Has a major in the bag, but bottle wouldn't be his strong point. Great??
Woodland. Don't think so.

So, within 6 shots, we have no current greats of the game. Kaymer has been world number one, won a major, holed a massive pressure putt to win a Ryder Cup. He can legitimately be termed a great.

Spieth aside, he has more bottle than the rest of them put together. Spieth himself has struggled to win this year, spurning numerous opportunities, so his next one will be the hardest to win.

Im not saying Kaymer is some sort of certainty, but I certainly wouldn't be laying him on the above invalid grounds. I expect he will relish being back in the limelight. It could well be a shootout between the two leaders, the rest certainly need a bit of help from them to get back into it.

I would have Kaymer and Spieth joint fav at around 3.4 at the moment, so if was having a bet it would be the German. Zach Johnson could also be worth a top up at 65. He has made a few silly errors this week, but the putter looks hot, and he could just go crazy one of the next two days.
Report newapproach May 10, 2014 2:04 PM BST
Furyk has won a major hasn't he? A US open I think but before my time watchig golf so not sure. I'd expect him to finish a lot stronger than he has in recent tournaments because he has such a strong record here and lives near the course I think. Probably a bit too far off the front two to win though.

Rose is playing well but has a poor overall record at the course so when the prssure really comes on he might struggle.

Henly has played fantastic ad should go well, was impressive @ Honda classic this year.

Overall, I'd expect Spieth to finish the job now, very impressive @ the masters as everyone knows. No interest in getting involved at current price though.
Report callitasucit May 10, 2014 6:29 PM BST
Sorry NA, he won the 2003 US Open. Just dont think he has the bottle anymore. Would need to fall into his lap, like it nearly did last week. Should be an interesting weekend. Spieth was very impressive the weekend of the Masters, he seemed to control his emotions a lot better than normal. Hopefully its something he can maintain. The world is his oyster if he can.

Fran Molinari looks well worth an investment at 5-4 in his 2 ball against Woodland.

He has improved with each passing round, and though it would be a lot to ask to better yesterdays 67, he wont have to to win this contest.

Woodland shot his best round on Thursday, and though still in the hunt he rarely impresses on a Sunday. Mol being a shot further back can help for this particular bet, as he is far enough off the pace, that he wont expect to win, and has a history of excellent Sundays when winning hasn't been foremost on his mind.

STORY OF THE (yester)DAY

Justin Rose began Sunday’s final round two strokes closer to the lead than he had originally thought after the PGA Tour reversed a two-stroke penalty it had assessed Saturday. The reversal came thanks to a new rule that was implemented to protect players from violations that can be seen only through high-definition devices and sophisticated technology.

Rose was assessed the penalty on Saturday after his ball moved on the 18th hole after he had addressed it. After three separate reviews of the incident using high-definition cameras and highly magnified images, officials ruled it was a violation of Rule 18-2b and he was assessed a two-stroke penalty, one shot for the ball moving at address and one for not replacing it after it had moved.

But an adjustment to the Decisions of Golf (Decision 18-4) was implemented last year so that “The ball will not be deemed to have moved if that movement was not reasonably discernible to the naked eye at the time.”

The fluctuation in odds over Kaymers last few holes were huge .  Before the break Furyk was mid twenties  , when Kaymer faced his downhill 6-8 feet aim left to righter on 17 ( putt seemed about 30 feet or so ) , Furyk went to odds on .

Overall suited me well , Martin was one of 3 I backed to trade , and I always keep a few quid up my sleeve .  Jim Furyk I always keep on the right side of  , and I had backed him the previous week when something similar had happened where he finished well and was awaiting developments .

Overall though , the significant statistic I took out of the whole exercise was that 7 of the top 10 were non USA , and top USA was Jim Furyk , one of my 3 world USA players I have harped on about over last series of years . The other USA players just dont cut the mustard faced with the worlds best , hungry fighters , Hagler satin sheets syndrome I reckon .

WELL DONE.........He's back (Ryder Cup star).

Martin Kaymer survived a 90-minute weather delay and held on to win The Players on Sunday, making back-to-back clutch pars on 17 and 18 to edge Jim Furyk by one. Here’s the skinny on the final round at TPC Sawgrass:

The leaderboard: Martin Kaymer (-13); Jim Furyk (-12); Sergio Garcia (-11); Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose (-10)

What it means:

The 29-year-old German earned his second PGA Tour title, and his first since the 2010 PGA Championship. He has 10 wins on the European Tour, most recently at the 2012 Nedbank Golf Challenge. The former world No. 1 (for eight weeks, in 2011), who in recent years has slipped outside the top 60, will return to the top 30 when the rankings are released Monday. Prior to this week, Kaymer had just one top 10 in nine starts this season.

Round of the day:

Kaymer’s was certainly the most exciting. He had a three-shot lead and a 20-footer for birdie when the horn sounded. When he returned to the course, he missed the birdie putt, then hooked his tee shot on 15 into the trees. After pulling his approach left of the bunker, he flubbed his third shot in the bunker, then failed to get up and down, leading to a double bogey. On the par-5 16th he played conservatively around the green for par, then barely stayed dry on the island 17th after his tee shot took a strange bounce and then sucked back onto the fringe. After a poor chip, he drained a 27-foot par putt to stay one ahead heading into the home hole. On 18, he pounded a drive down the middle, came up short with his approach from 174 yards and putted to 3 feet for the win.

Best of the rest:

Jim Furyk finished runner-up for the second week in a row, after a closing bogey-free 66 gave the local favorite a chance for a playoff. Ultimately, he once again learned his fate while watching in the clubhouse.

Biggest disappointment:

In position to notch another huge victory, Jordan Spieth instead went backward on Sunday to tumble down the leaderboard. After going 58 holes without a bogey, the 20-year-old dropped five shots in an 11-hole stretch during the final round and wound up in a tie for fourth, three shots behind.

Shot of the day:

Seemingly destined for a playoff, or crushing defeat, Kaymer holed a 27-foot par putt on the 17th hole to stay one clear.

Quote of the day:

“It’s very special for me,” said Kaymer, whose mother passed away in 2008. “I got a text message from my brother, which was very emotional, so it’s a good day for us.”

Report callitasucit May 12, 2014 2:18 PM BST
It was serious entertainment for the last hour.

Everything nearly contrived to fall into place for Furyk to claim a much needed win. 'Fall into' being the operative words, as I think this is going to be the only way he is going to land one.

But Kaymer showed the difference between good players and great ones. Be it whatever sport, the Greats can find something from somewhere when needed most...Tigers putt for playoff in 2008 US Open, Nadal and Federer consistently producing ridiculous match saving winners in their Wimbledon Final Epic, Maurice Fitz from the sideline against Dublin, Roy Keane against Juventus in their treble winning year...... Kaymer pulled something from his boots on 17, and proved what a born winner he is. Amidst people like Kuchar, Scott, Rory, Westwood etc, who seem just as happy to finish second, its good to see Kaymer show them how its done.

Fran Mol again produced superb Sunday golf, until the point he thought he could win. Always one to keep an eye on for final round 2/3 balls when off the pace.

Rory produces his now trademark dazzling Sunday round from a position he couldn't win from. Why cant he do it when it counts??

Spieth was disappointing, but it cant have been a real shock to anyone. He has failed to deliver on quite a few weekends this year, and the longer he goes winless, the more the weight of expectation grows on those young shoulders. His luck from Saturday couldn't have been expected to continue, especially if as wayward off the tee. But he did show again what a wonderful talent he is, and when his temperament is honed, and he gets the overdue win, the golfing world may watch out.

I would have won more if Sergio had won. He may consider himself unlucky to have slipped on the pinestraw on 11, but he put it on the pine straw, and he missed an ultimately easy par putt. And quite a few other makeable ones along the way. His temperament continues to look better though.....especially when not in the company of Tiger.

Martin Kaymer held on to post a 1-under-par 34-37=71 in the final round of THE PLAYERS.

This win backs up Kaymer's titles at the 2010 PGA Championship and 2011 WGC-HSBC Champions.

His 13-under 275 tally placed him one better than Jim Furyk. Kaymer was cruising with three birdies, the longest from 12'5" on the par-5 11th, and no bogeys on the card when lightning in the area stranded him on the 14th hole.

The 93-minute delay had a clear impact, as he came back and double-bogeyed the relatively benign par-4 15th, and then struggled to make a par at the par-5 16th. He nearly spun his tee shot on the par-3 17th back in the water, eventually holing a 28'6" par putt to remain one up with one to play. He would put it away with an up-and-down par at the 18th.

The irons were the key to his week, landing 75 percent of his greens in regulation to rank third in that category for the week.

With this victory, he is exempt into the 2014 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the next three editions of the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship.

Learning To Fly

Yes, Jordan Spieth came up short -- again -- after holding the share of the 54-hole lead at a big-time tournament.
Let's keep that in perspective, though, since he can't legally drink until July.

Give the kid -- and he really is just that -- some credit.

Spieth is learning to deal with defeat and it is no slow, simple education.

He's getting a crash course in final-day disappointment, having played in the last group at the Masters and again here at The Players Championship, only to be shaking hands and offering congratulations to the winner, slinking out of the spotlight.

After finishing tied for fourth at the Players Championship on Sunday, Jordan Spieth moved up to sixth in the FedEx Cup standings and has now earned nearly $3.2 million in the 2013-14 wraparound schedule.

"I'm stinging right now," Spieth said in the darkness at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday night after a final-round 74 left him 3 strokes back of winner Martin Kaymer. "It's not fun being that close and having opportunities and being in the lead on Sunday and not pulling it off."

No, of course it isn't, not for a grizzled veteran who has been through these battles over the years. And not for Spieth, just 20 years old, and lest we forget, a pro for barely 18 months.

But the questions will surely have a bit more of an edge as Spieth proceeds toward his expected greatness. That comes with the territory when you contend for the top titles in the game, ascend to the No. 7 position in the world ranking, see your name atop leaderboards from one coast to another.

Already in 2014, Spieth has posted six top-10 finishes. He had 36-hole leads at Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach, and was tied for the 54-hole lead at the Masters and Players Championship.

He shot a 63 playing alongside Tiger Woods in January and made it to the quarterfinals of the WGC-Match Play Championship in February. In the course of a month, Spieth has been in the last group of the two biggest tournaments of the year to date.

And he has a goose egg to show for it in the victory column and no trophies to display on his mantel.

"I'm disappointed right now in how I performed," Spieth said. "But I think I'm on the path to good things. It's been a great year of putting myself in a lot of positions and having new experiences instead of having to come from behind, trying to hold leads.

"I think that [is] something that it takes a little time to adapt to and hopefully I'm done trying now."

Spieth's remarkable streak of bogey-less holes ended at the fifth, where a poor drive forced him to lay up and he was unable to get up and down from 100 yards. He had played the first 54 holes missing 16 greens and saving par each time and ran his streak to 58 for the tournament.

"I just didn't quite have the magical short game of the first few days," Spieth said.

Nobody should be expected to play entire rounds -- let alone tournaments -- around TPC Sawgrass without a bogey, but adding four more on the card was the problem. His bogey at the 10th was particularly cruel, as Spieth's approach appeared headed for a close birdie chance, only to hit hard and kick to left into no-man's land.
And the birdies at the second and fourth hole would be his only ones of the day.

"When you're at 14 under and then the winning score is 13 under ... and you know I was there during part of that round," he said. "That's tough to swallow."

Spieth's lone PGA Tour victory came last July at the John Deere Classic in a sudden-death playoff. He was just 19 at the time, and it was remarkable, earning him a spot the following week in the Open Championship, as well as invites to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and the Masters.

He's not been able to follow up with victory No. 2, which will undoubtedly cause some consternation among some who wonder why he's not been able to close. He's had at least a share of the 54-hole lead three times this year. He was second going into the final round at Torrey Pines.

To which the reply would be: who has even been so close to winning so often at age 20?

Yes, Woods was just 20 years old when he won his first two PGA Tour events -- after first blowing a 54-hole lead soon after turning pro in 1996. And he won the Masters in his first try as a pro at age 21. Special stuff there, and an unfair comparison for Spieth.

Yes, Spieth has had some shaky Saturdays and Sundays, and there are clearly a few mental hurdles to overcome. To shoot 74 and lose by 3 will not go down well.
"Certainly last year we did have trouble on Saturday," said Michael Greller, Spieth's caddie. "And we did talk about it. I think he's done a pretty good job not putting expectations on himself."

For Spieth, this is on-the-job training, and it's invaluable. If he weren't at Augusta National last month and at TPC Sawgrass this week, he would be a junior at the University of Texas. When the U.S. Open and Open Championship roll around -- had he somehow not qualified -- he'd be playing in summertime amateur events.

Instead he's competing against the best in the world and having enormous success. That old saying, "It's better to try and fail than not to try at all," would appear to have some merit.

Would Spieth be better off finishing 20th every week, or stepping into the cauldron of contention, feeling the heat but coming up short?
He won't take it as any solace, but Phil Mickelson was 14 years older than Spieth is now when he captured his first major championship.

"Going forward, I still think that I'm playing extremely good golf going into two tournaments [Byron Nelson, Colonial] that I've had success at on golf courses I'm familiar with and atmospheres that are like a major championship for me," he said. "So I'm extremely excited for the Texas swing coming up and carrying the way that I played this week."

Spieth earned another $440,000 on Sunday, a reminder that his on-going lessons remain lucrative.

But the all-time best brain-blip penalties??

The two-fer happened at the rain-delayed first round of the 1987 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP and longtime reporters refer to it as "Not now".

Before the rain delay, Raymond Floyd's caddie had walked ahead of him on the 11th fairway and dropped the bag so the open end was facing the tee.
Floyd's drive rolled into rough and into his open golf bag, which is a two-shot penalty.

After the delay, Floyd asked playing partner Seve Ballesteros if he could hit a few practice balls before play resumed.
Ballesteros said yes and Floyd hit a few balls into the woods by the sixth tee. He was tagged two more shots for practicing in a non-practice area.

Floyd was steaming at the end of the day and, when he saw a reporter approaching, didn't wait for the question. "Not, now,'' he snapped.

A few months later, the same reporter approached him and asked "Now?" They both laughed.
