THE greyhound industry is mourning the loss of one of its true legends as news broke on Wednesday morning of the death of Seamus Graham.

Writing on the IGB website (IGB.ie), the Racing Post's Irish correspondent Michael Fortune said: "The genial gentleman from Ballickmoyler in County Laois has written and re-written the history pages of greyhound folklore and he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest handlers of a greyhound this world has ever known."

Graham, who landed multiple big-race successes since buying his first greyhound, August Morning, back in 1958, won his first Irish Derby with Dipmac in 1984, and followed that later with successes for Tina Marina and Climate Control, while the English Derby was to come his way courtesy of Loyal Honcho, runner-up to Westmead Lord in 2007, who came back to triumph at Wimbledon in 2008.

Reposing at his home in Ballickmoyler tomorrow Thursday with prayers at 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be at 12noon on Friday at Mayo Crettyard Parish Church.

In an incredible twist to the story of Seamus Graham’s sudden death came the news that the trainer’s favourite greyhound also passed away this morning.

The sensational tracker and sire, who was twelve years of age on April 2nd, had been sick recently and it was obvious that his days were nearing an end.

Seamus Graham’s son Diarmuid today said that “Premier Fantasy has been sick for ten days and he hasn’t eaten for four days. It is amazing that he died on the same morning as dad”.

During a short but quite fantastic career, Premier Fantasy won the Comerford Cakes National Puppy Stake at Shelbourne in December 2003 and then returned the following April to win the Easter Cup in a then track record time of 28.08sec.

He then moved to Wimbledon and took the place by storm in the William Hill English Derby where he won his first four rounds and then smashed a hock in the semi-final when clear entering the opening bend. He was never to race again. He was a son of Premier County and Nifty Niamh.

Desperately sad and very poignant that the dog he had such admiration for passed on the same morning.
